  • This tune makes me want to grow a goatee, wear a beret and smoke an unfiltered Chesterfield while nodding on the corner leaning against a lamp post.

  • this makes me wanna pop a nut in central park

  • amazing how Miles could get the rich big band sound with a relatively small band (9 instruments). Miles probably made more changes in music as a whole than any other artist, truly one of the greatest, if not THE greatest innovator ever

  • @fredury and max roach!!!

  • Cool jazz wasn't exactly groundbreaking or sophisticated for its time. It was more of a mainstream reaction to the end of bebop, more relaxed and "cool". Also modern avant-garde can be just as sophisticated and technical as anything from the past, you just gotta go looking for it.

  • Sitting by the fire, drinking some hot cocoa, watching the snow fall while Boplicity plays in the background.

  • aaahhh i just gave birth to the cool

  • awesome just so classic no tricks just so cozy

  • Woah so advanced for the late 40s!

  • @ImmatureJoE even more advanced for 21st century. in my opinion, music from the past is really a lot more sophisticated than modern stuff

  • @ImmatureJoE it's from 1957

  • @JDPGILKS

Actually it's recorded in 1949/50, but not released until 1957 ...

  • 2:50 to the end is great i loved playing this! I played bass trombone so i got the cool thang at the end wiff my bari sax friend!

  • Were playing this is jazz. Not sure if well do it justice but I really like this song

  • From 1949. Miles was way ahead for the time ... :-)

  • One of the greatest jazz tunes ever written. Always puts a smile on my face

  • what is the definition of boplicity?

  • This has got to be one of his BEST tracks ever! Boplicity is smooth & rich.

  • Makes me wanna wear a beret and nod out on the corner. Crazy, man!

  • always remind me of the simpson episode when bart and milhouse discover playboy magazine. fits so well to the atmosphere

  • WHO WOULD DISLIKE THIS?!

  • @SEMPfilms People who don't know what 'Cool' means

  • это супер музыкант! it is super-super music!

    its legend standart!!! - boplisity.

  • Miles. One of the legendary names that doesn't need a last name.

  • Love the whole piece, but my favorite part is the trumpet solo that starts after the piano has six measures of rest.

  • the absolute climax of texture in any jazz album ever

  • What year was this album released? I have found three different dates; 1949, 1950 and 1957. I have 'The Complete Birth of the Cool' and I want to tag it with the correct year and I know it was released in 1998 but I am a stickler for actual original album release dates. Anyone know?

  • @shaitan9 The tracks were recorded in 1949 and 1950 but the LP in its entirety wasn't released until 1957.

  • @jplew138 Ah, thanks! I kind of had a feeling that was the reason. I was watching 'Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog' and they showed clips of his band playing with the date of the performance and then the original date released and even though I could tell that it was obvious that the song they showed the band playing was from an earlier date, it dawned on me that this is how they determined the albums date, because they were liver performances! duh/ Thanks again.

  • Boplicity was composed by Miles and Gil Evans who, for some reason, used the name of Davis' mother, Cleo Henry, as a pseudonym.

  • why do heroin addicts always make music which touches me most?

  • @saulya two things. check out clifford brown, clean as a whistle. and i don't believe davis had started doing heroin at this point

  • my baby loves miles

  • @donottawaguitar: Then you're bringin' up baby right! :-)

  • We are playing this in jazz band and I love it!

  • Absolutely Beautiful! Never get enough of Miles

  • My second favorite song off of my second favorite Miles Album

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

  • coooool. this bit swings most proper. great upload, thank you

  • coooool

  • Great music to paint to

  • timeless

  • These people were so gifted, it's astonishing after 60 years.

  • I LOVE the simpsons episode when Bart and Milhouse dressup as playboys in smoking jackets....and are listening to this on vinyl!

  • No one can play like Miles; the idea of mimicry is simply ridiculous.

This is definitely one of the easier Miles albums to listen to, personally I like the later stuff slightly more, just for it's weight and intensity but the listener can really hear that same sense of purpose in Miles' notes on this album that is heard in his later stuff.

  • this makes me want to watch a spike lee joint!

  • Funny, i always seem to be listening to this tune while drinking coffee. Guess the two fit together.

Really brings you into that studio/diner mood.

  • @ViperEye Perfect way to listen to this song haha

  • Great

  • This is my favourite song from Birth of the cool.

  • Great Fighting! You're An Up & Coming Boxer!

  • Does anyone else think of Joy Spring in the beggining?

  • @gingersoll6 lol, yeah. Same notes, but different beats.

  • @gingersoll6 Especially the Clifford Brown Pacific Jazz version. The EmArcy version, not so much--that's more the Brown-Roach sound.

  • Yes, I like it!

  • I wish someone would post a video breaking down all the individual parts. I've been trying to break down the parts by ear but it's not working.

  • Melt away on a cloud of smooth and beautiful jazz featuring one of the best trumpeters of all time...

  • @BIGOMAR93 kay...

  • this song is utter genius. only heard it for the first time a week ago and now it just pops into my head at random times, I fucking love it. The melody and arrangement are so complex, the depth is endless with the NONET horns, wow, I mean you hear new stuff every time!

  • Miles davis playes the trumpet

  • One of my ALL TIME favorites! This song just gives me a good feeling

  • so fun to play... such a pleasure to listen to

  • Dont forget about Gil Evans...

  • If this ain't cool then there ain't no cool!

  • If this ain't cool then there ain't no cool!

  • What year was this recorded?

  • This shit is pure sophistication...stright up!!! Davis was smoooooooth as fuck!!! I get them dawm goose bumps whenever I listen to his music..especially this song!! Jazz music is still seriously alive today..please believe it!!!

  • I gotta learn not to toungue so harshly on this song. Miles plays so smooth...

  • @snailzillascreator No man, don't try to play like Miles. Don't play like anyone except yourself.

  • my personal favorite, so much fun to play and to listen to

  • The ACDA High/Collegiate Jazz Honor Choir is gonna be doing this one, I can't wait to be a part of it.

  • A perfect blend of structure and improv. Miles does play the best trumpet imo.

  • I just love this tune. Superb!

  • We played this as one of our honor jazz prices, it was a lot of fun

  • It doesn't matter when or where you discovered this music. The only thing that matters is that you cherish it as much as I do.

  • This tune is also cool when played more upbeat with a larger ensemble.

  • This lovely composition by Gil Evans is the one piece of the many sides collected of the nonette for this album to actually deserve the description of Cool Jazz, and would point the way for further exploration of these ideas by others, including Gerry Mulligan who played on these sessions and went on to be one of the great leaders in the Cool Jazz movement. However, Evans and Davis moved on to new frontiers.

  • this is my jazz band audition piece...

    it's fun

  • What Simpsons episode does this play in?

  • season 16 episode 2 All's Fair in Oven War

  • In the episode of "All's Fair in Oven War," Marge enters a baking contest.

The subplot is when Bart and Milhouse discover discarded Playdude magazines, which Homer threw in the trash after Marge clipped out each and every pornographic picture out of the magazines (the magazines were hidden behind a wall and rediscovered when Homer decided to remodel the kitchen).

Bart and Milhouse become engrossed in the cultural aspects of the magazine, sans the porn, including enjoying hi-fi.

  • There is one scene where Milhouse and Bart are in a room with a console radio/phonograph playing Boplicity from the "Birth of the Cool" album.

  • Would it be embarrasing if I said that I first heard this on The Simpsons?

  • Not really. I first heard it on the Simpsons, it's how I got into jazz.

  • hey! it's cool to notice bebop and it ain't embarrasing at all, in fact it 'd be so cool if they played more bebop on TV

  • this isn't bebop

  • Pretty but not strong or deep enough for my tastes.

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe because this was cool jazz?

  • Good point and I'm sure I'd enjoy it in the right setting or environment but compared to Kind of Blue and similar pieces, it's not as engaging, more background music and not foreground music. And I don't think there's anything "cooler:" than Kind of Blue.

Still beautiful though. Don't get me wrong.

  • so MODERN !

  • My favorite Miles album of all time!

  • this is abousolutly brilliant it just gets me into that sort of mood

  • Plus he was one of the first to try jazz fusion

  • nice song... davis is 1 of the most ingenious jazz songwriters ever

  • Godchild is magnificent...however Boplicity is my favourite to solo on...

  • Sounds great! I looked up "cool jazz" and this is mentioned as a genre stepping away from bop, also known as "west coast".

  • whats the first favorite song off the album, if i may ask?

  • Godchild

  • @pepxxx Wow, those are my two favorite songs off the album too! With "move" probably being my third favorite.

  • very nice
