amazing how Miles could get the rich big band sound with a relatively small band (9 instruments). Miles probably made more changes in music as a whole than any other artist, truly one of the greatest, if not THE greatest innovator ever
Cool jazz wasn't exactly groundbreaking or sophisticated for its time. It was more of a mainstream reaction to the end of bebop, more relaxed and "cool". Also modern avant-garde can be just as sophisticated and technical as anything from the past, you just gotta go looking for it.
What year was this album released? I have found three different dates; 1949, 1950 and 1957. I have 'The Complete Birth of the Cool' and I want to tag it with the correct year and I know it was released in 1998 but I am a stickler for actual original album release dates. Anyone know?
@jplew138 Ah, thanks! I kind of had a feeling that was the reason. I was watching 'Charles Mingus: Triumph of the Underdog' and they showed clips of his band playing with the date of the performance and then the original date released and even though I could tell that it was obvious that the song they showed the band playing was from an earlier date, it dawned on me that this is how they determined the albums date, because they were liver performances! duh/ Thanks again.
No one can play like Miles; the idea of mimicry is simply ridiculous.
This is definitely one of the easier Miles albums to listen to, personally I like the later stuff slightly more, just for it's weight and intensity but the listener can really hear that same sense of purpose in Miles' notes on this album that is heard in his later stuff.
this song is utter genius. only heard it for the first time a week ago and now it just pops into my head at random times, I fucking love it. The melody and arrangement are so complex, the depth is endless with the NONET horns, wow, I mean you hear new stuff every time!
This shit is pure sophistication...stright up!!! Davis was smoooooooth as fuck!!! I get them dawm goose bumps whenever I listen to his music..especially this song!! Jazz music is still seriously alive today..please believe it!!!
This lovely composition by Gil Evans is the one piece of the many sides collected of the nonette for this album to actually deserve the description of Cool Jazz, and would point the way for further exploration of these ideas by others, including Gerry Mulligan who played on these sessions and went on to be one of the great leaders in the Cool Jazz movement. However, Evans and Davis moved on to new frontiers.
In the episode of "All's Fair in Oven War," Marge enters a baking contest.
The subplot is when Bart and Milhouse discover discarded Playdude magazines, which Homer threw in the trash after Marge clipped out each and every pornographic picture out of the magazines (the magazines were hidden behind a wall and rediscovered when Homer decided to remodel the kitchen).
Bart and Milhouse become engrossed in the cultural aspects of the magazine, sans the porn, including enjoying hi-fi.
Good point and I'm sure I'd enjoy it in the right setting or environment but compared to Kind of Blue and similar pieces, it's not as engaging, more background music and not foreground music. And I don't think there's anything "cooler:" than Kind of Blue.
This tune makes me want to grow a goatee, wear a beret and smoke an unfiltered Chesterfield while nodding on the corner leaning against a lamp post.

Boplicity was composed by Miles and Gil Evans who, for some reason, used the name of Davis' mother, Cleo Henry, as a pseudonym.
