"A hero with the Mana Sword *smashed* the Fortress." I never thought much about this line until Autarch of Flame brought it up, probably because I was young when I first played this game.
But now that I think of it, they could have meant that line literally. I mean, there are all sorts of damaged crystals and holes in the walls when you visit the fortress, right? It's funny, but now I'm picturing Serin literally smashing the walls of the fortress with his sword :P
I always named the sprite "fuckup" because he would constantly get stuck behind a crystal, or a tree, or a wall; it was especially bad in the mana fortress. I can't even remember how many hours I spent in here collecting all the hidden level 9 weapon orbs.
This is my favorite song, and also has my favorite remix of any game all time from Mcnoods at ocremix.org, you'll listen to this on repeat all day I guarantee.

Randall, Purin and Popoie are on his way to finally defeat Thanatos, and attemping to save Dyluck, Purin's boyfriend, whose relationship is honoured in this theme, Purin is dying to see and save Dyluck, but she already knows there're more important things to do, such as saving the world from the menace of the Mana Fortress and Thanatos, the dark lich....so, she must leave her love feelings apart until they solve everything
This music is extremely epic! I used it as my Level 9 tune in my Zelda Classic Quests "Islands Of Death" and "Castles Of Peril". So AMAZINGLY EPIC I used it for BOTH of my Level 9s. XD
Ah ok then, well yeah go for the emulation option then, but i recommend zsnes because it seems to emulate SoM more accurately, especially when flying the world map with Flammy

Love the maxed out super spells and lvl 9 weapon orbs in the fortress from random enemies!
Also amazing to have 3 people all playing the game at once.
Im thinking about writing a book about Mana, mostly with elements from Secret of Mana and also new stuff... This story is so cool and imagine there would be more story about the emperor, the heroes, the generals of Vandole and some new persons..
Its an advantage that the game is so old; i think kinda remake would do very well.. What do you think?
If only games today were like this and not about some random guy dropped in a boring drab battlefield with no music and you press buttons on people's heads over and over again. I mean, people do that for HOURS, and I can't understand why they think that's fun. The transition took full effect around the start of our current generation. Now people focus too much on the resolution and stuff rather than the passion and soul of the game. These are truly the dark ages of gaming...
@DarthYoda27 I actually read a pretty interesting segment in this month's Game Informer that listed the most interesting characters from some of todays games and then went to explain how they were different and how they affected their world. They were either much deeper then you thought or they were simply "different" from most characters in their genre. I wonder if you checked that out?
Man this music brings back so many memories seriously lol. I remember first playing this back in 93 when I was 12 with my little brother and sister. The winter area was the wildest, because it was during that blizzard of 93. I remember all of the trees were encased in ice and it reminded me so much of the area we were in on the game. This is really great music ^_^
Funny thing about the translation of this song's title -everyone who translates it has to make up a verb. The original Japanese is an incomplete phrase - 愛に時間を.
i remember when i first stepped foot into the fortress..this awesome music was playing as i was getting anhialated by cute little mushrooms and strange looking duck creatures. fuckin good times i miss them.
when i get to the mana fortress i reflect on the previous things i did before getting there. its pretty amazing once you think about it, how this game builds up to the mana fortress.
why can't they make something like this or chronotrigger anymore?
I mean those were greatn games! they had comedy, storyline. don't get me wrong. i mean, half life, left 4 dead, halo, and lots of select games are great too.
but some times i kinda wish that games were more reflective, like these games.
I just noticed, if Mana is hope and happiness and joy and stuff...why does the Mana Fortress look like a machine? I saw it in my head as a floating island with a huge castle on it (resembling Angel Island from Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but without the Master Emerald shrine and with a castle...it makes sense to me.)
According to the story, the Mana Fortress was built by highly advanced humans centuries ago as a weapon. Given that it's a weapon built by an advanced race, it makes sense it would look like a giant machine.
@Oakscreator123 Now that I think about it (15 years later), there's sort of an environmental preservation message embedded in this game.
Humans harnessed the power of Mana to create their civilization, but took it too far, and with it wielded too much power, so the Gods struck them down. The Mana fortress was the final affront, a massive war machine created of a natural power. I mean, there are even subways in the depths of the Lost Continent, so I guess it's kind of an overt message.
thats the prominent theme of all 'mana' games. The world's inhabitants use 'too much' mana and imbalance the world. The mana tree is the source of mana.
All the mana games hint at the idea that they are all from the same world that keeps getting reincarnated with the mana tree's life/death cycle. The world forgets everything from one cycle to the next.
This song is almost saying, "This is the moment of truth. This is the moment of life or death." It's not even that complicated of a song. It's limited SNES sound quality and yet it beats most of the crap that we have today. However, some games nowadays have awesome music as well.
@Und1ne Literal, word-for-word translations from Japanese and other languages tend to not make any real grammatical sense and therefore their meanings need to be inferred and you can usually end up with several different translations.
@Und1ne The song's names usually are translated in many forms; it's, in first instance,a japanese name translated then to english and every translator has its own style. In many things, there are not official translations and in others, there are more than one only official name.
I've reached here thanks to this name, for example : ) (In Castlevania: SotN, their tracks have at least, 2 translations too).
Oh and you know, one of my favorite parts of this game was being able to do multi-player. There aren't enough RPGs like this, and today there's truly no excuse, since just about all consoles come with 4 controller ports. (Anyone remember using the Multi-Tap to be able to play this on the SNES? XD)
Some people think chrono trigger is the best game of all time... that might be right... but "I" personaly think secret of mana is unreachable it is the most epic adventure. I had never seen anything like it before and it was by far the longest and most adventuring game ive ever plaid. The ending was so sad, yet so wonderful.
Mana's hard to even judge, because apparently the US version wasn't even the full intended story, nor was it fully translated. This must be a good song because I probably listened to this for around 100 hours, trying to get max equipment and weapon orbs in the dungeon, and I still enjoy it.
When i entered the mana fortress for the first time, i was very surprised of the music. i expected some creepy evil stuff, but this one is beautiful. still one of my favourites!
Games doesn't need to be 3D to be good.
Games doesn't need to have be released on 2012 to be good.

Mana's hard to even judge, because apparently the US version wasn't even the full intended story, nor was it fully translated. It was scaled back to fit on a cartridge, and the translation was cut to make deadlines and some cutting was done for technical reasons (i.e. font fitting into the text boxes).
That being said, Mana's an amazing game, and I wonder how much more amazing it would be with a full/complete version.
