  • The Iraqi santur is a bit different from the Persian santur, but they are of the same family of instruments and share a common origin diverging only a few hundred years ago. The Iraqi santur has 3 bridges, a thick soundbox, 23 or 24 courses of strings, and can play chromatic notes. The Persian santur has 2 bridges and 18 courses of strings. The oldest depiction of a dulcimer was found in southern Iraq and according to oral tradition it was further developed during the Sassanid and Abbasid eras.
