i just found your videos and your awsome man.Taxi Driver's also one of my favorite movies. I think it was also bullshit the screenplay didnt win its one of the best i've ever seen
You hit another one out of the park,Ed.Great review.I love this movie cause is a time capsule of 'ol NY.I don't know what's worse...old dangerous NY with its grindhouses, peepshows, and scumatoriums or Nazi Disney NY with its overblown glitter and tweeting yuppies.Oh well,to each his own.Keep up the quality work friend!
I know all about Arrow Video, although I don't own anything of theirs. I wouldn't mind getting some of their BD's considering the covers alone are all pretty awesome. I've been trying to get review copies of their stuff too, but to no avail.
I'm also looking forward to Burial Ground on BD. It's one of my favorite oddball Italian flicks!!!!
@Duckmanxxx Thanks man! Seriously, what an amazing price for such a killer BD! That's another reason I felt compelled to do this video because first off, it's awesome but then again it's available for such a good price. People would be silly to NOT pick it up for that price!
@kousoulides You're right.....I don't care. Basically I'm doing Youtube videos man, I'm not making a feature film. When people are paying me, I'll be sure to have top notch equipment. Glad you dug the review. It's definitely worth picking up.
Great job. Can't wait to get this disc. Great to see that for this Blu-ray Columbia has licensed the original Scorsese / Schrader commentary from the 1986 Criterion LaserDisc. It also retains the Schrader only commentary from the previous 2 DVD set.
Great review and amazing package! Do yoy know if the portuguese subtitles are brazilian or european? I so want this blu ray! Wishing they are european....
Great review, Ed. One question: Does the paper back cover peel off the front easily or would you have to tear it off where it's attached to the front? Seems like it would be an annoyance to keep that on.
@travisreininger I was just looking at it again the other day to see about this myself. It looks like it peels off at the part where it's blue and has the blu-ray logo on it. The cover of the actual BD would actually still be intact if you rip it.
@travisreininger Not a problem man. I hope you enjoy it and when you get the chance to check it out, let me know if you think it was worth the purchase or not!
@Dzormagen Of course it depends on how big of a fan of the movie that you are. It IS actually a brand new transfer which is odd in this day and age for a movie like this one. That's one reason why I'd like to see people support it. Basically they did everything right as far as the complaints that us fans usually have about BD reissues of catalog material. It looks STUNNING in HD and I would have to say on that fact alone it's worth the upgrade. I don't own the DVD you mentioned.....
@Dzormagen so I'm not sure how the features compare off hand. I do believe there are a few NEW features that aren't on any other release but I'm not sure off the top of my head what they are.
Great review! Thank you especially for informing people that film grain is something to be sought as it retains detail and the correct look of the film, rather than something to be scrubbed away in an attempt to get a "clean" look that is not only completely unfaithful to the original look of film, but is waxy and lacks detail which is the very point of the increased resolution of Blu-ray in the first place.
@singhcr Thanks for that man, I really appreciate it. I think that a lot of people in general are misinformed about Blu-ray, HD, and the like so I try and share what I do know. Most of it is information that I found important when I first managed to get a TV/blu-ray setup. Plus as far as the BD of Taxi Driver goes, it looks incredible. They did such a great job with the release that I figured I should give credit where credit is due.
You are welcome! It's important for us to inform people that HD is just a resolution, and that a HD movie on Blu-ray won't look like the football game shot with an HD video camera. If people don't get that film has a unique look and want the grain scrubbed away, you'll get situations like Predator: UHE (man, that was bad!), Spartacus, Patton, and the original releases of Gangs of NY and Gladiator.
Thankfully studios like Sony are cranking out great releases like Taxi Driver!
@singhcr Exactly and that's a difference that I believe your average person doesn't understand. It's a totally different thing that requires completely different presentation. Luckily, I haven't seen any of the other BD's that you mentioned (except Predator) which shows I'm pretty informed about the BD's that I purchase. There are so many out there that aren't really what they claim. If I remember correctly there's a BD of 28 DAYS LATER that isn't even in 1080!
28 Days Later was shot on a Canon SD camera that has about the resolution of a DVD, so it won't ever look that good. Aside from the better audio, there's not much of a reason to have it on BD.
@jasonpp1973 No booklet that I know of unless it's included in the shrink wrapped cards I show in the video. Nothing loose, as I show it pretty much as is in the video. Hope that's a bit of help.
Great review. The 1986 Criterion commentary was only available on the Criterion LaserDisc, so this is the digital debut of that much sought-after track.
Did you happen to catch the Taxi Driver restoration on the big screen this past Sunday and/or Tuesday? Select AMC Theatres were projecting it in 4K, and it was absolutely stunning.
Can't wait for the Blu-ray. This is a release that I've been dreaming of since I first got my Blu-ray player.
@jamesoblivion Nice, thanks for the info about the commentary track. It's something I definitely plan on watching with the movie. I always save my commentaries for a "rainy day" so to speak.
I didn't manage to catch it on the big screen, but that was basically because I got dates screwed up in my head about when it was playing here in town. I'm pretty bummed that I missed it.
The Blu is gorgeous and is totally worth picking up. It's also cool because it's a nice disc to show you HD off!
I agree with ya completely on everything u said about the movie. I mean how the heck is this possible that De Niro didnt win! This was straight Oscar winning performance and yes I agree this is his best performance till date even better than The Godfather 2 but I have seen Academy doing such things all the time. When it comes to appreciation Oscar Academy sucks big big time. Its always glad to see people who appreciate this movie and Travis.
@RJSM00VE Thanks! I'm actually happy that someone noticed that. I figured that most people already know that Taxi Driver is a great film even if they haven't seen it. So I figured a critique would be actually a bit silly. Especially considering I think it's practically perfect. Plus, I think what I did was a bit better than just gushing about the movie during the whole video. I doubt anyone wants to see that.
@iamgood00 It isn't completely removable. It's stuck to the front of the packaging but I'm sure you could take it off if you want. I'm a bit nerdy when it comes to stuff like that as I actually keep all of my DVD and BD slipcases too, some people just toss them away.
Great review Ed....love your stuff. What about a ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST blu-ray review?
