I used RPG Maker 2003 a lot back in the day, when it first came out. Why don't you use RMXP or even VX? They're vastly superior with much easier scripting. I prefer the ATB side view battles too, but you can get scripts for them. I can even message you those scripts if you want.
@genesisSOC I honestly didn't like XP. VX is my favorite RPG Maker but it requires sprites with different sizes and I have a hard time to find *good* sites that allows me to find sprites not from other games (AKA Final Fantasy and such). The reason why I didn't go with VX though is because I don't know how to use scripts. If I knew how, I would have surely went for VX anyway. I been looking for tutorials but they've always been... utterly useless due to lack of instructions.
@catboyjeremie Honestly, all the good tutorials and scripts are for XP.. I'm not fond of XP's RTP battlers, but that has an easy work around. I'm sure you know how to import graphics in, so you could always use XP's RTP or RM2k3's RTP in VX. I'm pretty sure VX accepts sprites of any size, its RTP is only 1 square by default. Though I can't speak too much for it since I've never used it (it has a terrible reregistration system), but I can definitely send you "copy/paste" scripts for RMXP.
@genesisSOC I see, I guess XP is popular but personally, I just can't stand it. I really did not like the interface. VX is just as easy to use like 2003 for me. If I can change the fighting system for VX (instead of facing like in old and crippled RPG Maker 95) and find enough resources, I'll switch to VX.
@catboyjeremie Well there's definitely ATB side view battle scripts in VX that you can find by Googling, and I can link you to sprite generators you can use that look like RM2k3, RMXP, or RMVX sprites.

@genesisSOC I would strongly appreciate it. I'm not trying to make a masterpiece but it would still be nice to have a better presentation.
