On a racetrack, a 944 will almost always defeat comparable US cars like a Mustang or Camaro. It may not have the power of the US cars, but it can actually turn. Even today the 944 still sees action on the racetrack (24 hour races, stuff like that), not something you can say about Mustangs or Camaros.
@S944Porsche Nah, both cars sound different but equally amazing. And don't be so sure. If we're talking about the first 944 turbos, they only produced 217 horsepower at the flywheel. A '98 Cobra has almost 100 horsepower more. The Turbo S, which created like 243 hp, would stand a better chance but it'd be close, I think.

i have both a 944 which is my dads car and a 2001mustang gt which is my car. there both great cars and i would choose both cars over most other cars out there both handle great, but the porsche turrns and brakes better, but the mustang puts the power down and accelerates faster and is alot more fun to whip around. and certainly dont forget the sound of the muscle car. both great cars love them! keep in mind there both stock though.

Awesome 944. I just bought an '86 944 Turbo in beautiful condition, with the same turbo twist wheels, 968 rear wing, and silver color. However, my car was putting out smoke like this 944, and it ended up being a crack in the head gasket that was leaking coolant into the 4th cylinder. You might wanna get that checked out haha... $3000 to fix that and an oil leak.
The 2.7L was only offered in the 1989 Porsche 944 NA, the 944 Turbo's were still 2.5L. 2.5L to this day is a large 4 cylinder you got that right. It was a engine built to boost, 8:1 compression ratio therefore it relies on the turbocharger for its power. If its not spooled you feel lots of "lag", once spooled look out ;)
Does neither one know the 3 honk horn rule? Anyhow from my experience, the majority of Mustangs need a supercharger or nitrous to compete. The top speed on a "Cobra" is about 150mph which can be achieved by pretty much any import sport car. Top speed runs for Mustangs are sluggish as well. I wish Ford would have kept up the pace and used the 351's, 6 speeds and real world rear end gear ratios from 93 and up.

I was going to write a comment about how the little Porsche totally slammed. The music is not good. You thought you were creative, but you just grabbed a title. I appreciate your effort, but After trying out a 2009 Mustang V-6, I decided that I'd keep my '84 944. Faster, cooler, and in MO, a real head turner. Especially after smokin' the locals in their Mustangs.
Right on! There aren't too many 944's left - especially since only 130,000 were made. Geez, Ford probably stamps that amount of Mustangs in a year. After 26 years, my 944 still gets 27 mpg hwy. The new Mustangs may get a second look, but our cars get questions, and leave fond memories.
@miamaz try that with the 2011 V6 Mustangs, tho. 305 horsepower and 280 torque. I'm not a fan of one over the other, I love both cars over most out there, just stating the facts.
i have a 1998 model v6 3.8litr but for some reason it keeps not wanting to run.. we just replaced the CCRM and the fuel pump and acouple other things but for some reason it starts but it doesnt want to keep running, it struggles its not really getting that much fuel in the valve

To Piperporsche: Turbo Vs Supercharger (AKA Procharger)... Really??? You'll always run more boost in a supercharger application (to make equal HP) than a turbo'd application as a rule because of the crank power it takes to use the supercharger. Ford Mod motors LOVE boost and handle it better/longer than an LS1 would normally. We get the LS1's back in our shop and the 4.6 (ESP the cammer's) are making massive power with single/twin turbo setups on stock blocks- Average seems to be about 655 HP.
@cantbsdave You didn't mention that the transient response on any centrifugal blower is horrible compared to a turbo or positive displacement blower. Who along the way made the claim that centrifugal blowers make more mid range and have no lag? It's the greatest lie in the automotive aftermarket. Ford Modulars will clearly outperform the GM pushrod stuff due to the pentroof head design. No comparison there at all.
Someone I agree with! Ok- def agree about the centrifugal supercharger. Unfortunately even with a higher boost curve, they seem to be a little more efficent but still have "lag" although slightly less than a similar turbo setup (I love turbo's - the heat). A positive displacement (Roots) supercharger gives me the instantaneous boost we know and love just a shorter boost curve. The GM guys that walk in the door talking how all else sucks and I have to remind them it's not magic, just more engine-
A properly sized turbo is on the wastegates at half to 60% of the redline whereas a centrifugal never reaches full boost until redline. The whole concept is flawed from the start. The centrifugal compressor must not be coupled directly to the engine if one wants to have good transient response. Yes, 4.6 vs 5.7 liters is a big difference for sure. Just look at the ZR1...it takes them 6.2 liters PLUS boost to make 635 HP. Ferrari makes the same power on the same displacement with NO boost.

I disagree with you wbaubl, I cruise with many highly modified cars. Two being a 1994 STS Turbocharged LT1 Camaro @6psi and a 2004 Procharged Mustang GT@12psi I have noticed that the 5.7L LS/LT series engines responded to boost better than the 4.6L SOHC in the Mustang.
A stage 2 in a 951 could just be a little K27/8.... Yes thats lightly modified.

guy i know had an 87 944 turbo when i was 18, i beat it with my fairly stock 5.0... on the other hand,, my buddy had a green 97 cobra, he bought it with 410s in it, and man,, what a fun car to drive with those gears, they REV awsome, that car was fun for a stock 90s rig

I was going to write a comment about how the little Porsche totally slammed. The music is not good. You thought you were creative, but you just grabbed a title. I appreciate your effort, but After trying out a 2009 Mustang V-6, I decided that I'd keep my '84 944. Faster, cooler, and in MO, a real head turner. Especially after smokin' the locals in their Mustangs.

Right on! There aren't too many 944's left - especially since only 130,000 were made. Geez, Ford probably stamps that amount of Mustangs in a year. After 26 years, my 944 still gets 27 mpg hwy. The new Mustangs may get a second look, but our cars get questions, and leave fond memories.

i have a 1998 model v6 3.8litr but for some reason it keeps not wanting to run.. we just replaced the CCRM and the fuel pump and acouple other things but for some reason it starts but it doesnt want to keep running, it struggles its not really getting that much fuel in the valve

To Piperporsche: Turbo Vs Supercharger (AKA Procharger)... Really??? You'll always run more boost in a supercharger application (to make equal HP) than a turbo'd application as a rule because of the crank power it takes to use the supercharger. Ford Mod motors LOVE boost and handle it better/longer than an LS1 would normally. We get the LS1's back in our shop and the 4.6 (ESP the cammer's) are making massive power with single/twin turbo setups on stock blocks- Average seems to be about 655 HP.

@cantbsdave You didn't mention that the transient response on any centrifugal blower is horrible compared to a turbo or positive displacement blower. Who along the way made the claim that centrifugal blowers make more mid range and have no lag? It's the greatest lie in the automotive aftermarket. Ford Modulars will clearly outperform the GM pushrod stuff due to the pentroof head design. No comparison there at all.

Someone I agree with! Ok- def agree about the centrifugal supercharger. Unfortunately even with a higher boost curve, they seem to be a little more efficent but still have "lag" although slightly less than a similar turbo setup (I love turbo's - the heat). A positive displacement (Roots) supercharger gives me the instantaneous boost we know and love just a shorter boost curve. The GM guys that walk in the door talking how all else sucks and I have to remind them it's not magic, just more engine-

A properly sized turbo is on the wastegates at half to 60% of the redline whereas a centrifugal never reaches full boost until redline. The whole concept is flawed from the start. The centrifugal compressor must not be coupled directly to the engine if one wants to have good transient response. Yes, 4.6 vs 5.7 liters is a big difference for sure. Just look at the ZR1...it takes them 6.2 liters PLUS boost to make 635 HP. Ferrari makes the same power on the same displacement with NO boost.

I disagree with you wbaubl, I cruise with many highly modified cars. Two being a 1994 STS Turbocharged LT1 Camaro @6psi and a 2004 Procharged Mustang GT@12psi I have noticed that the 5.7L LS/LT series engines responded to boost better than the 4.6L SOHC in the Mustang.
A stage 2 in a 951 could just be a little K27/8.... Yes thats lightly modified.
