Fantastic work. I know you sell these for around $10,000 or so...but i would like to know how much you actually have, money average wise, in a tail like this?
LUCKY! i have been surching for atleast for -4 years for a new, cheap and/or good looking tail.(im 12 now, i have been looking since i was like 9 or 10)
I use molds that are created to put the silicone into them. It is a long process that takes time and patience since the material also needs to be painted afterward. Everything starts as a sculpture then I make a mold of that (or a copy) so it can be made from the silicone.
Gorgeous! After seeing this, I went to your YT Channel and watched a few of your other videos, and really enjoy learning about what you do. Upon popping over to your site to see the rest of the merfolk you've worked on, I'm delighted to find films you've done, like "Hellboy II" and "James & the Giant Peach!" They're 2 faves of mine, it was a total treat paging through your site. ^_^ (LOVELY music, too! May I ask ask who did it?) Many thanks, and many kudos!
Paradise Lost is the band. I like their style but this is only a sample of what I though was cool for a clip back then. On my website the music is from a band called: Cocteau Twins: "Treasure" - it was the only song I felt was fitting to the site. The other song came from "Without Face" which is a band that came from Hungary and almost got big but didn't... I like Cocteau Twins because they have a very ghostly and solemn sound.
@renaessance Thanks so much! I'm sorting through all their music now to try and find the song on your beautiful web page. "Treasure" seems to be an album, but I've still yet to find the music I heard when I paged through your lovely site. :) Thank you for your replies, and for making such wonderful pieces! Your work adds such magic to the movies I love, and to the real world at large for the tails you make possible for people like me. :D
@Docjava3 Many thanks! Congrats on the 20th Anni. and new Venus tails, btw. Your coloration and shading, construction & attention to detail are supreme. ^_^
this is an excelent tail you have done a good job on it =D .... i would like to design a tail and make one my self could you possible sugeest a material that could be used in chlorine water other than the silicone mater you use for this tail (as it is quite expensive and im quite poor :P)
adam can you tell me what kind of material they used in the original movie?thanks.and by the way one of the tails that u said they'd auctioned off is now at planet hollywood museum, usa.
The original material was something called Skinflex, it is a Urethane rubber that is extremely toxic and is not used for anything these days for Special Effects in films. This was a good material to use 25 years ago since it was the only thing that could be used in seawater at that time.
@robert2594 The original tail in Planet Hollywood in from the second film: "Splash Too" it is not from the first film but it is from the same molds pretty much. The original material used was a material called "Skinflex" and is a urethane rubber that was used 20 years ago. They use better stuff now but back then it was the best thing they could find for using in seawater.
More than likely that Daryl has an original tail, this tail though is a recreation of the film tail that was made for my 20th anniversary or working in the film industry. Perhaps you forgot to read the video info....
It is very durable. The material can stretch over 1000% since it is a special silicone used for special effects in movies and theme park animatrionic characters. It's also used for medial applications (fake noses and ears for cancer patients who lost them)
It is a medical-grade silicone that is used for Prosthetic body parts and is very expensive for most people. It is often used by doctors to make missing body parts such as hands and facial parts (ears, noses, etc) for people who have lost them due to cancer or car accidents. It us unique since it feels like skin and it lasts longer than many other materials used for making tails.
I love daryl hannah's tail in splash. ecspecially the one used in the scene where ship is swimming to the sunken ship...is that specific tail for sale? and for how much? I would love to have that copy.
Me too, sadly- materials from 1985 don't last so long and anything used in the Original film either fell apart or melted from the sun. There was only one tail that survived from the film and that was sold in auction years ago (this was the sidewalk tail seen when Daryl gets sprayed with water to expose her as a mermaid)
It's Red, Orange, and Yellow, with Gold highlights, and has a dark brownish wash inside the scales. It was painted the same exact way the original tail was painted.
exuce me can you make more tails for cheap i saw one on ebay i just want one if your kind enough can u send a free one to me u.s.a syracuse new york 152 lakeview ave 2nd floor im 10 i lied about my age to get in i have asma im trying to find a pashion
Docjava3 puts a lot of work into the tails and also probably pays alot for the fabrics i defintaly dont think you could get one for free but i dont know
For your information, these were never free and they were never made from fabric. The amount of work that goes into the tail is more than 3 months of solid work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day.
I would never give make a tail for someone for free!
Because she owns this tail that I made. She is the one person who asked me to make her this tail in this video. I am very proud that the experience was one that I am most proud of showing. If only she would make a video of her in the tail... That would be great huh. BTW, love your vids as well!!!
Yes- Adam is the BEST! I will post a video once I wear it in the pool.. :) "A dream come true"- is an understatement of the appreciation and admiration I have fro Adam as an artist! He really did make my dream come true :) after 25 years of living in envy of Daryl Hannah :)
Thanks for the comment, I am hopeful that one day you will use your writing skills to also read the info about this video or perhaps view my other videos.

MermaidAbbey 2 years ago
This is a prosthetic-grade silicone material used mainly for medical applications and also in the film biz for special mechanical skin effects.
