The problem with the whole situation is the fans got screwed. Why VKM wanted to protect his precious belt (mainly because his former women's champ therw hers int he trash) made no sense. Since he had already told the public it was meaningless and a faux sport. Sadly, he broke a deal with Bret in which he would drop the belt the next night on Raw. Choosing to renig on a backroom deal. And Michaels went along with the plan. VKM would go on to kill Bret's brother - But that's another story.
This entire thing was a very dynamic coy involving Bret, Vince, HBK & many others in the wrestling business to make money on the side, via revenue sharing, ect. It was a genius plan, and Bret Hart was the mastermind of it, you can tell it very clearly by the way Bret Hart's documentary plays out, it is a drama from point to point.

You know why this is considered one of professional wrestling'sgreatest matches? It's because both the former, and current WWF champion, entered thering with serious nerves. Both Bret and Shawn were anxious as though ghtye were about to engage in a real fight. That's what made this bout so enthralling. Noe one knew for sure what would happen. To me this is wrestling's peak.
The fact this match ended the way it did is just so sad. In my view, Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart is the greatest rivalry in WWF/E history because both men started off respecting each other immensely and ended up hating each others guts. This match at Survivor Series 1997 was the last of the three WWF Championship matches Michaels and Hart had. It was the deciding factor on who would win the series. Bret won at SS 1992, Shawn at WM 12. We'll never know who the better man was.

@theashton113 was real, the storyline was about bret making the sharpshooter to michaels, then hart was suposed to win be DQ, but McMahon was afraid that hart take the WWF Championship with him to the WCW (at this match, hart already had signed a contract with the WCW, but few people knew it) anyway, as WCW was taking control of the wrestling business, McMahon didnt take any risk of hart taking the title to the WCW and decided to change the storyline changing the storyline but not telling hart

Bret refused to give up the belt, for months, even after he signed up for a rival company. They tried to write him out, with dignity, but the guy just wouldn't drop the belt.
Then they found out, the reason he wouldn't follow the script, is that his gimmick in WCW relied on him being WWF champion when he left.
He was basically planning to use the "I'm still WWF champion" as his gimmick

You know why this is considered one of professional wrestling'sgreatest matches? It's because both the former, and current WWF champion, entered thering with serious nerves. Both Bret and Shawn were anxious as though ghtye were about to engage in a real fight. That's what made this bout so enthralling. Noe one knew for sure what would happen. To me this is wrestling's peak.

The fact this match ended the way it did is just so sad. In my view, Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart is the greatest rivalry in WWF/E history because both men started off respecting each other immensely and ended up hating each others guts. This match at Survivor Series 1997 was the last of the three WWF Championship matches Michaels and Hart had. It was the deciding factor on who would win the series. Bret won at SS 1992, Shawn at WM 12. We'll never know who the better man was.

I feel so bad for Hebner. He can't even look Bret in the eye when he comes to the ring. Just keeps his back to Hart while he walks around before the match. It's really sad that of all the refs, WWF had to pick Hebner, one of Hart's good friends, to do the match. You can tell he was uncomfortable with the whole thing and he didn't want to do it. You can even see him trying to get Bret to tap at the end so that he doesn't have to screw Bret. Really sucked for Hebner
