I've heard tons of different musicians cover Jimi's tunes, but nobody does it with as much passion as SRV. Jimi's left arm was a guitar, and so was Stevie's right.
Since they both had that orgasmic look on their faces as they played, I guess that analogy would make perfect sense. The best orgasms often come from playing with yourself. LOL!!

Ive got an idea, why dont you people quit arguing about whose better than who and just accept the fact that this is an excellent cover of an excellent song by an excellent artist who loved and emulated another excellent artist.
@YanksFan162 Actually, Hendrix was an R&B guitarist with rock technology. A lot of things he did, stylistically, were standard for folks playing in R&B bands (he backed up the Isleys and LIttle Richard), including the blues playing. When soul cats got their hands on the kind of equipment British and American rock dudes were using, it was time to head to the bomb shelter. Just listen to Eddie Hazel and Mike Hampton (Funkadelic) and Ernie Isley.
@ZeppelinFloydRoses Vaughan gave credit where credit was due, whereas Page took took other people's work and attempted to pass it off as his own. Look up 'Led Zeppelin plagiarism' if you don't believe me.
Don't get me wrong; I love Led Zeppelin, but to accuse Vaughan of simply copying other people's work (which is bollocks) and ignore LZ's blatant thefts is absurd.
@VanDoodah LED ZEPPLIN DIDNT MAKE DAZE AND CONFUSED!!!! SO ARE THEY SONG THIEFS? HENDRIX TOOK SONBGS FROM BOB DYLAN AND ELVIS IS HE A THIEF? JIMI SAID WHEN HE PASSED HE WANT HIS MUSIC TO CARRY ON NO MATTER HOW U PLAY IT OR WHAT U DO WITH IT AS LONG U LIVE MUSIC
@JHSRV420 You're an idiot. Firstly, stop writing in capital letters. Secondly, there is a difference between covering and stealing music. Led Zeppelin were an awesome band but they stole several of their songs. Hendrix covered some, but he always gave credits to the original artist. Led Zeppelin, initially at least, didn't.
@joethepainter90 - ABSOLUTELY - This track is a "never released" item from Stevie's box set. Just google SRV box set and it'll come up. There is also a BAD ASS version of Albert King's "Crosscut Saw" on the box set + other great stuff including his classics. It is one of my favorites.
As I'm living in Austin I tend to get burned out on Stevie as he is extremely overplayed in this part of the world *if I hear Pride and Joy one more time I'm gonna go apeshit with psychotic rage*, but then I hear this and I remember exactly why he's so overplayed here.
Then again I've always liked his Hendrix covers better than his originals anyway...
no joke ok when i was little i lived in austin, tx in the zipcode 78704 a few houses down from jimmy vaughn, the brother of stevie ray vaughn, who is also a musician. of course jimmy is nowhere near as good as stevie and stevie was already gone sadly by the time i was born (im pretty young) but anyway the point is all of us kids in the neighborhood grew up loving the vaughns and especially idolizing stevie, and my little brother's name is stevie ray so one year he went trick-or-treating as SRV
good god hendrix and vaughn were legends and i never thought i would like a cover of this but wow stevie really does jimi justice and reading what i have about jimi i know that he was a nice person and the kind of person who would have been very happy and honored that someone like stevie covered this and dedicated it to him (stevie did dedicate this to jimi and his legacy and memory...before of course stevie died. man the good ones die young so sad about them both).
SRV is not a hendrix wannabe, he was just the only guitarist to ever do hendrix covers any justice. No one else at all ever "gets" what the origional is trying to put across and miss teh point, SRV really got it and thats why his Hendrix covers are so great But thts not all he did. Tin pan alley and honey bee are amazing awesome songs in their own right. In fact I think Tin pan alley is my fave 12 bar blues ..
You shouldn't even be comparing them. They were both excellent guitarists in their own ways. Both are better than each other in some ways, but both remain among the best musicians to have ever lived.
@darken27 well i think multishades was trying to get his point across that Jimi was better. You can't compare any MUSICIAN to Jimi in my opinion. But Stevie did alot of good covers from Hendrix.
Ive done alot of research on hendrix and stevie ray, first of all hendrix liked bob dylan.stevie was a white albert king.NOT a white hendrix.stevie ray was more flawless than hendrix.Im a guitar player who happens to love both guitar players for there inspiration.I wouldnt say either is better than one another for that reason.you cant judge them cause they both learned from the older guys, they both wanted to be freddie, albert and bb king.Know your history.in reality we all are wannabies.
jimis outlook and steavies are what made them great anybody can play guitar they had a message, that people still don't listen to peace and love its just that simple
Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are both awesome in their own right. So anybody that is attempting to compare them and argue over who is better ought to shut up and just accept them as being two of the greatest guitarists ever.
@estariuna - Agreed! But every rock guitarist since Hendrix's death has in some way, shape, or form been influenced by Hendrix, including SRV. Talk to ANY professional rock guitarist and ask them their opinion on Jimi's influence on guitarists & music. Even his contemporaries at the time, like Clapton, Jeff Beck, Mike Bloomfield, on and on, have said how Jimi influenced them and the whole way to approach guitar playing. Jimi was an "anomaly" in the music world, "Never Before and Never Again"!
@ hendrixrocks4, fuck off you retard, you know nothing about Stevie you cocksucker. Stevie never ever had a bad show, yes he maybe had personal problems here and there and of course he was struggling with alcohol and drugs, but that never ever affected his guitar playing and shows that he would do, he was always on the spot, never playing a song the same way twice, never missing a lick and giving the very best of himself!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He played horrible a lot, anybody that doesn't know that really doesn't know shit about SRV. He has been booed off stage before, usually he was either too wasted, or too sober.
Stevie never played a song the same way... once!! :P
There's no point in comparing, Stevie played Hendrix songs but he did them Stevie's way, his touch, tone and style were his alone.
Hendrix and Stevie were both amazing but I never saw a gig (among many boots I have) of Stevie's where he played bad, I have seen some bad Hendrix performances.
John Mayer is not a better songwritter than SRV. Look at his stuff, all his stuff is just lame and shitty teen pop songs made for mostly teen girls. There is nothing special in it and there is no big magic in it.
Plus he has an annoying pop voice.

He is just a Hendrix/SRV wannabe and a rip off (when we are talking about guitar playing), and he plays it pretty boring, weak and with nothing new, raw, inovative and unique. Most of what he does is just making stupid pop songs for little girls. He is teribly overrated.
PS: Here are the names of people who are the real saviors of blues today and who can really play some nasty good blues rock guitar music. They are Ana Popović, Joe Bonamassa, Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, even John Frusciante.
John Frusciante isn't even really blues, he's a lot more funk-psychadelic-rock but he could still tear Mayer to shreds. JF is extremely Hendrix influenced though.
I respect John Mayer but come off it with the Clapton/BB/Buddy "legitimizing" him. That shit is straight record company manipulation hype. Him on stage with the legends at the Grammys is pure cash calculation, similar to when they had those Beatles specials on calling them the first "boy band" and having N'Sync and Backstreet Boys extol the Beatles' virtues. If John Mayer wants legit blues cred he'd better mix it up with white boys who've really been in there, someone like Steve Earle.
actually the legends legitimizeing him isnt worth a damn so they didnt do it for the money they say it because its true do i like jm ?not really. is he as good as people like srv ? absolutely not. can he do some things on guitar that i cant? most definately .but he is takeing on a srv type of roll by bringing blues music back into the main stream like srv did in the 80s and that you have to thank him for even though the teen girls that listen to him dont realize its the blues
- the "legends" fraternizing with john mayer increases both their record sales. how can you say there isn't a monetary motive in this?
- blues is a style of music, but it's also component of a broader culture. just like rap is a component of hip hop. john mayer is not blues. he does not live the blues. he's just co-opted the music for the general consumption of the public. no shame in that. but he is not blues.
blues is not main stream so there isnt alot of money involved compared to the other styles of music and i doubt buddy guys album sales went up that much just because he plays with john sometimes teen girls dont wanna hear an old black man sing and play but if kenny wayne shephard was to play with john his sales probly would go up and as for john living the blues i can say if he did or didnt i wasnt around him when he was growing up but yes srv was/is the blues
I don't mean to interrupt your argument, however while SRV is the better guitarists by far in terms of popular opinion, John is a FAR better writer. Doyle Bramhall wrote a lot of Stevie's stuff and after he received it would just put his magic in it. John set an entire new standard for pop music with his first album, whether or not all the macho guitarists want to admit it, and then he brought the blues to a HUGE NEW audience. You can't hate on that, just let people do their thing man
listen..... man... i know what im saying i fuckin play guitar... im really close to this music.... srv is good but hes not creative... and thats where the soul is....
john has in fact admited that although he didnt use those exact words i think he said something along the lines of i can play kinda like srv for all of 10 seconds and then my arm feels like its gonna fall off
wow, you play guitar? your tuff shit then. i guess you know what your talking about...
give me a break. a lot of people play guitar. including myself. If you think that Jon Mayor is the best, then your ignorant. he may be your favorite, but there are many better guitar players. There is ALWAYS going to be a better guitar player.
Nice job srv, but jimi version is better

Jimi Hendrix = rock guitarist with a blues influence.
Stevie Ray Vaughan = blues guitarist who sometimes played jazz.
Yes, SRV was a fan of Hendrix, but stylistically he was completely different. Appreciate both in different ways.

blues is not main stream so there isnt alot of money involved compared to the other styles of music and i doubt buddy guys album sales went up that much just because he plays with john sometimes teen girls dont wanna hear an old black man sing and play but if kenny wayne shephard was to play with john his sales probly would go up and as for john living the blues i can say if he did or didnt i wasnt around him when he was growing up but yes srv was/is the blues

You can't hate on that, just let people do their thing man

codehendrix 3 years ago
I play guitar too, SRV had more soul than most guitarists out there.

wow you play guitar!! Thats awesome!!!
John Mayer is brilliant but has about 10% of SRV's talent and creativity and im sure john would admit it.

john mayer would even admit that srv was 10 times better than him and that srv is more creative then he will ever be
mynameisstevo 3 years ago 3
john has in fact admited that although he didnt use those exact words i think he said something along the lines of i can play kinda like srv for all of 10 seconds and then my arm feels like its gonna fall off

wow, you play guitar? your tuff shit then. i guess you know what your talking about...
give me a break. a lot of people play guitar. including myself. If you think that Jon Mayor is the best, then your ignorant. he may be your favorite, but there are many better guitar players. There is ALWAYS going to be a better guitar player.
And being "better" is just a matter of opinion.
