I have started to learn Japanese myself. and it can be tricky, I mean, the way I learned to say whats up is like five times as long as that. so it depends. I t also takes a lot of time, dedication, and patience! Hope that if you do go, you have a great time!

in my opinion, i think learning how to read the characters are hard, but speaking it, isn't that hard once you get the basic sentence structure and vocab. i've been trying to teach it to myself and that it what i find.

I thought I was having a fairly easy time learning how to speak Japanese as well; but I realized that, since I was just memorizing common phrases, I had it easy. I've recently begun trying to learn to conjugate verbs to make my own sentences, and conjugation is a pain. Ichidan, Godan, and Irregular are the verb types. But for just one verb type the conjugation changes based on which syllable the verb ends with :/

I have Japanese friends and he says schools require them to learn English, but it's very basic. Sentences such as "I have pen", "Pen is Blue" etc... were about the extent of his English vocabulary. Try Pimsleur Japanese if you want to learn how to speak Japanese fast. It works great. But if you want to be able to make your own sentences and speak more informally then buy some text books including something on Colloquial Japanese.

it's amazing how similar it is to how it is portrayed in anime and films, you always theink they have exaggerated certain elements but it's all so wonderful and serene, I can't wait till I go there =)
