The first bone-weapon changed into an orbiting H-Bomb, one of many shown orbiting the Earth. Tension with the Soviet scientists abord the station with Dr. Floyd about news-blackout at clavius and top secrecy (still going on today) about the alien artifact found near Tycho crater at Clavius showed Cold War was still going on. Ending in Novel where the STARCHILD detonates all the orbiting H-bombs Kubrick felt was too much like end of Dr. Strangelove.
Once a species starts using tools. depending on its spiritual evolution, it is just s short step, and 4-million or so years, until that species conquers the vast gulf of space, and understands that we are one, of many. All life in the universe is RELATED. We are all one beam of life!
The first tools wee bones. As we evolved, they turned into more sophisticated weapons, like orbiting H-bombs depicted in the film. In the Novel, the Starchild detonates all the orbiting nukes.
in the movie, stanley kubrick portrayed a model of a telecommunications satellite orbiting the earth right after the moon-gazer "pre-humanoid" threw the bone into the air. the book mentions hydrogen bombs but stanley kubrick changed it because he had already dealt with that madness in dr strangelove. as an electrical engineer i am fully aware that the satellites of today are much different than in the 1960s. however, the shielding problems still remain to this day as well as the fuel
this movie is amazing. its enlightening to say the least. The thought of how the "primitive man" saw the bone, registered it, evolved its mind to realize it is useful, then learns the tool, and how to mechanize its body to the use of it. all within a matter of minuets Thats just insane. We as humans can still do this instead of just living out sedentary lifestyles. THINK ABOUT IT
everything about this scene is so perfct. it is synchronized so well with the music and every little detail is flawless. personally i think this is the most enjoyable part to watch in the whole film. i get goosebumps every time i see it:) and also its a little hard to see in this clip but take note of the little ball of saliva that flies out of the apes mouth. so much thought and detail was put into this.
Ahh I love apes....well all but those horrible apes from the planet of the apes.......wait a minute...statute of liberty.... o_O....that was our planet. You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you all! God damn you all to hell!
Sorry, i love this film, but you can't (badly) cut together this ape scene with THE jump cut to the space ship. It's just wrong! THE jump cut comes after the killing of the opposing ape 'tribe', not after this scene. Anyway, sorry to be pernickety!
1:43 to 1:48, the greatest scene in any movie ever made! The entire history of man from ape-man to the present is encapsulated in that period of time! Utter and complete genius. Although I don't believe in the premise, it's still genius.

actually in the movie the satellite is a telecommunications satellite from the late 1960s.

WHICH sattelite? I know them all, and my research-partner is a payload-specialst at Lockheed-Martin for past 14-years.

A pre human species of ape. Not all species of ape evolved into homo-sapien man. Our distant cousins are Tarsiers.

I think the whole movie is weird, especially the last part. THAT's what makes it so unique in the first place.

its trying to symbolise the birth of tools/weapons.

Yeh this is a beautifully simple way to illustrate the moment man, became more than an animal, and started using the tool.
