His playing is so sparkling,so emotional and energetic... you can say it's Horowitz from the first note. the phrasing, always diferent from the others, but his sense of rubato unmatched......... almost magical. like a breeze of fresh air in every piece of music he plays. to me,the very best.
Just no words for this performance. One of the best of Chopin's compositions rendered by one of the best of the Chopin virtuoso group. Why only 4716 viewers?
As always from Horowitz, an interesting rendition of the piece. Although I like pretty much everything that he recorded, this is one of those rare exceptions. I disliked the choppy phrasing at 1:16 and the lack of pedal is certain parts.
More Horowitz than Chopin I fear, compelling though it is. Michelangeli does it for me with this work where he combines flawless virtuosity with innate lyricism.
I really hate the voicing of this piano up top. Not just nuts about the performance here. Horowitz is trying too hard. The 'line' is obscured and it all seems too overthought.
It's from the second volume of the Horowitz plays Chopin album, so it isn't rare, not like his probably apocryphal Tea for Tea recording. I'm glad that now all his Scherzi recordings have been posted on Youtube now.
This is even better than I'd imagined it would be. It's the first time I've heard the bass melody brought out so beautifully, others seem to overlook it almost entirely. I also find H's narrative deeper and more complex. Well done!!
I think intriguing is the right word. There are instances of bizarre phrasing like 6:13 in the codetta, but the scherzo still sounds more meditative in his hands than anyone else's. Which is fitting, since the programmatic title for the scherzo when it was published is "Meditation".
i don't think anyone can play the ending any cleaner than horowitz does

You should watch Yundi Li play all 4! He plays them perfectly!

@MusicClassical1 If by perfect you mean technically perfect, then no, Yundi Li does not play them perfectly.
Not trying to be provocative - clearing up facts.
