I don't care what you say. Why would I when most of your comments are ridiculous. And if disagreeing with you makes me arrogant and condescending then I'll gladly be guilty as charged. Not noticed you being cocky though, if that was your intent you really must try harder.
To start with you argued 'ALL bands play music BASED on baroque', and now you state 'SOME band's music RESEMBLE baroque'.
And are you surprised that people think you're odd with the weird and tacky videos you've favourited?
You have some sort of fucked up personality defect eh? lol Why would I care if people thought I was "odd". I'm not the moron that has to resort to browsing your YouTube history. You're clearly a troll if you can't come up with anything relevant. Are you saying Leadbelly wasn't influenced by Western music? It's hard to believe you're over the age of 16 when every message contains an irrelevant personal attack that makes you look like the tool.
Me, a personality defect? That coming from someone having a hissy fit over a 6 month old discussion. You're very, very funny. Moron, troll, tool.... irrelevant personal attacks from me? Giggletastic. And imagine browsing through Youtube! Outrageous! I wonder if people know that other people are browsing through them uber private items they've uploaded... duh! And because Leadbelly would have been exposed to Western music he's influenced by Baroque now? Wibble.
Well I kinda assumed you'd shut your overgrown trap eventually. Take some responsibility, you started the personal attacks, so man up to it. Did I ever surf through your history in a lame attempt to find something to throw in my argument? That's just sad. What sort of music education do you have anyway? You sound very musicially uneducated. Sorry you can't man up to your own immaturity.
You're like a little yapping dog, chasing it's tail when it's not getting attention. You've got a misguided opinion of your own intellect, clouded by your blinding pretentions. You make a sweeping comment and are surprised that someone disagrees? Then you tie yourself in circles, ever more pretentious when you continue to fall short. My history is there for you to browse through, that is the entire concept of this site after all. Hey, browse and marvel at my immature and ill educated choices.
So what makes your interpretation of music more vaid than mine if you have no formal training? What I presented was a comparison of styles. Artists don't create music in a vacuum, they're obviously influenced by the music around them. What I'm asking is why is there an obsession with diatonic music limited to pre-classical era harmonies. It seems as though people aren't ready to accept dissonance.
You mean valid? I don't see my opinion as more valid than anyone, but certainly no less valid. You principally stated that Baroque was an overwhelming influence, but Baroque is no greater an influence than anything else. Diatonic and dissonance? Like saying there's an obsession with salt and pepper in cooking. And dissonance is subjective, depends on musical style, on musical backgrounds, on how much you like Marilyn Manson.
Again?? After 3 months? Yap...yap...yap....yap....pant...yap? Ad hominem? If you can't show I'm trying to counter your argument by purely attacking you, you can't wimper ad hominem. My off-hand remarks and sarcasm are not trying to counter your argument, this DOES NOT qualify as ad hominem. You simply don't like that I dont completely agree with your views, and see you as a somewhat comical character. Well done in proving this.... now that's what I call.....
@MarkRevival LOL you had an argument? The only thing you spoke of was my character because you have no substance to what you say. What does my Youtube history have to do with Baroque harmonies? That's an epic phail. You should be a politician since you talk in circles and say nothing.
Not just your character discussed, plain to see for anyone scanning the posts. I only commented on you once it was clear you were an irritating, pretentious bore who was unable to accept the possibility people would disagree with your ever more vague ramblings. Re: your youtube history, following your own argument it's everything to do with it, according to you everything is directly influenced by baroque.
Not understanding the terms 'ad hominem' and 'phail' though.... classic Baumann phail.
@MarkRevival huh? Let me try to decipher that. lol I never said everything is influenced by the Baroque, I said that's what people want to hear. I still fail to see why someone would even scan my Youtube history unless they had a lot of time on their hands and really had nothing else to say.
Yap....yap....yap.... do you really enjoy this pointless wibbling?? Lol?? Decipher?? Are you dyslexic?? Why would people want to scan my youtube channel?? Would you like me to explain the entire point of this site??
I've got plenty to say, I'd just rather say it to people who are capable of discussing whatever subject is pertinent. And that rules you out.
@MarkRevival Lol ya I wouldn't understand consdiering I have a degree in music. My history is not my channel. I only have a few videos posted in my channel. Do you want to go through my garbage can and cell phone log too? lol Something in there might be pertinent to the music discussion. What exactly do you know about music? You were the one trolling on a Nirvana cover video about how you think Nirvana sucks. What do you expect people to say?
Oooooh I see. You have a degree. Unfortunately having a degree doesn't abrogate ignorance, or mean any points you try to make are more valid. Wasn't it JFK who said .....the greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds?
I have no interest in you whatsoever, you seem to enjoy the notion that I do. I'm sure the Jungs of this world would glean plenty from that. Myself, I just think you're a pretentious bore.
@MarkRevival hah. You're still the one trolling on a Nirvana related video. You know that JFK quote is about space exploration right? Studying music makes you a better player and listener. You can't compare one band to another when they're all the same genre, it's just a matter of personal taste and I happen to enjoy Nirvana's music. You can call me pretentious all you like, but I spent time and effort learning about music instead of talking out of my ass.
Trolling? Still? I only post here in reply to your ramblings. Looks like we can add trolling to ad hominem and phail as a term you don't understand or are unable to use properly.
You CAN compare or critique any band to another regardless of genre, what a ridiculous comment!! Nirvana are exactly the same as Tad? Squire the same as The Purple Hearts? All that time and effort spent learning about music certainly hasn't affected your ability to talk out of your arse. Have got nothing better to do?
@MarkRevival lol What does it matter what band you think is better or worse? People are still going to listen to what they enjoy and consider "good music" bands they indentify with. Yes, rambling about how Nirvana sucks on a Nirvana related video is trolling. It's too bad you've never been edudated. You're really saying nothing. Someone can say tchaikovsky is awesome because he writes pretty melodies and another person can say he sucks because his music is boring and repetitive.Who's right?
You really haven't got anything better to do have you.... I'll try and break it down so it's easy for you to understand.
It doesn't matter what music one person prefers, it's personal taste, but each person has a right to compare, contrast or critique anything they please.
My first post on this song was relating directly to another posters' comment that Nirvana were the first band to 'discover' angst. Since then I have only ever replied to you, you troll. I was here for the Polyphonic Spree.
@MarkRevival I'm sure you were. It seems to me like you were trolling this video and bashing Nirvana. Nirvana wasn't a very technical band but they had a lot of passion. I don't even find their music that angry, I find it more melancholy. Who's the first band to discover angst then?
Angst is not angry, I forgot your degree was only in music. First to 'discover' angst? Everyone from Mahler to one man and his dog, but for you as an American, there are plenty of examples in music around the Vietnam War. I'm pretty certain as an example that was before Nirvana.
Too bad about my education? At least I can spell the word. Or is edudation the term for those tacky how to pick up girls vids?
I'm saying plenty, you're repeating the same vapid points and not retaining or understanding the answers. Even in your last point you go in circles and repeat the same points.
And re: Tchaikovsky... some people may say his music is boring and repetitive, but nowhere close to being as boring and repetitive as you.
@MarkRevival I guess that's where we differ, I like women. Big deal if I made a spelling mistake, you still don't know jack about music. You're not making any points, you just twist what I say into Ad Hominem attacks. You have absolutely no valid musical commentary.

It's evidence of your musical and intellectual personality... it was an easy question though, but I appreciate you calling me a smart guy. Thanks. I've made plenty of points, you just cant understand them, you could never be fallible could you? Fortunately by and large the readers do.
@MarkRevival What are you talking about? Removed what? How can I be American if I live in Ontario? That's a puzzle. lol Youtube history is evidence of someone's personality. Ya, you'll see that at the next court trail. "This man watched a violent video on Youtube, he's obviously a murderer." What I like about Nirvana is that it's raw and simple music. It doesn't try to be overly complicated or self indulgent. Simple music can become very boring when you take away the raw emotion.
Look up the posts 'comment removed by author'. And you're Canadian? Bless you, I'm sorry.
We're discussing music, on youtube, so erm... yes it is evidential regarding your musical and intellectual personality. Have you eschewed all other subjects just to pontificate on music?
@MarkRevival Yep, 100% Canadian here. I don't know everything about music but I'm good at harmonic analysis and theory. I don't listen to the Beatles, but I think they were better songwriters than a lot of bands today, using secondary dominants etc. I think Muse writes good music or bands like Sonic Youth that use more dissonance. Most music on the Radio like Nickleback is kind of like Nirvana without the passion or melancholy, to me anyway.
This cover is brilliant, the anger of the original song's lyrics and chorus combined with the light tune created an amazing contrast but ad this song and the polyphonic spree's upbeat style and you have enough contrast to sink a battleship.
i fucking hate all this comments that say that this people suck. u mother fuckers must be so fucking good uh? get a fucking life!
and have some respect for the song, no matter how or who plays it, the intention is to remember Nirvana and eventually Kurt by playing one of their songs.
I really don't think that those guys think that that is what that song is about lol. Don't read into it too much, Nirvana inspired countless people. Just because this song is angry doesn't change the fact that the members of that band might've been inspired by it. Don't be closed off man, they aren't out to find god they just want to cover a good song and I don't see what's so wrong with that.
What do you mean that this song isn't angry? Nirvana as a band pretty much invented teen angst music lol; everything they did was angry. The song is about being bi-polar; Kurt Cobain was really pissed because his lithium changed his mood so often, so he wrote a song about it made him feel. It's kinda hard to miss that if you hear the lyrics lol.
Nirvana invented teen angst? hahahahahaha. how old are you, 15? hahahahahaha. Teen Angst in music has been around since music has been around... nirvana invented not taking showers and pretending to not care... clearly, dave grohl has show that deep down he cares what people think, enter the shit stain known as Foo Fighters
Nirvana as a band pretty much invented teen angst music...
... Where can I send the dry cleaning bill? I've just laughed so hard I pissed myself. And everything they did was angry? Is angry another word for crap? Pointless and derivative cack from a band in the right place at the right time, who happened to have a reasonably intelligent and good looking front man. That's all. And Dave Grohl pisses all over Kurt Cobain.
Okay, I'll level with you. They didn't invent it, because that is an ignorant comment. But, they were kind of the biggest band to play into that style of music (to that point). So that is all that I meant by that. Of course they didn't create it, but they did make it really profitable and successful, and I think that that is all that I meant.
lol if Nirvana was a crap band, why can't the bands today make better melodies? Kurt used parallel keys to show his blues influence. If phrasing and writing original melodies was easy, bands would be making songs that hit bigger than Smells Like Teen Spirit, but all you hear is more of the same.
lol? You clearly don't listen to much made after 1994 then. Even the Foo Fighters piss over Nirvana. But there are plenty of bands 'making better melodies'.
And make you're mind up, using parallel keys to show his blues influence OR writing original melodies?
You're clearly pretty ignorant of the other music out there, so I suggest you run along and listen to Marilyn Comedy Manson and watch one of you're bouncing booby videos. Mmmm, there's a keen mind eh? Er... lol.
So saying the Foo Fighers piss over Nirvana is valid music criticism? Cobain structured lyrical melodies over chord progressions that were influenced by the blues music he listened to. It's not like anyone after 1994 did anything more innovative. All the rock bands continued to play diatonic music based on Baroque harmonies and some of the newer bands use an over abundance of 9th chords. Schoenberg, Charles Ives, and John cage did stuff that was way more creative almost a century ago.
Yes it is valid. Better written, more melodic, consistent and a wider catalogue. Simple.
But you clearly don't understand anything you've written. All rock bands use the diatonic scale? What a wide and sweeping statement since diatonic means different things to different people. Depending on what's inclusive or exclusive, pitches, harmonics... And all based on baroque harmonies? You're having a laugh, right?? Schoenberg was more widely influenced by the baroque than 99% of rock bands....
And baroque itself falls into so many different styles, and then there's variation within them! And the difference from Peri through to later composers like Perolesi shows variation and progression.
You might as well just make the statement all rock music uses notes and is based Inuit throat singing.
No why aren't you watching your bouncing boobs and listening to the diatonically baroque Manson boy?
The fact that you resort to juvenile rhetoric is proof that there's no substance to your argument. Of course rock music is based on Baroque harmonies. When you turn on the radio and hear rock music you hear songs either in the major or minor mode, with regular phrasing. It's rare to hear a song that includes applied harmony or modulation to distant keys. A song based on a 12 tone pitch series or a system of pitch organization like the Mystic chord would never be played on mainstream radio.
Of course Baroque composers had influences, primarily being Renaissance motets. Rock music is obviously based on Baroque harmonies and form. Rock music doesn't resemble pre-Baroque modal music, and the harmonies are too simple to be compared to Romantic or post Romantic music. The focus on consonance and regular rhythms resembles that of Baroque music.. I've never heard a popular rock song that was atonal, 12 tone, aleatoric, bitonal, or based on the whole tone scale.
So the blues was based on baroque harmonies? I can just see Leadbelly supping gutrot, strumming away and thinking 'Blimey, this here music focuses on consonance and regular rhythms, there's that crazy baroque again!'. And jazz? Nope. And as pretty much all modern music derives from these two forms, your arguement is weak.
Not all modern music derives from blues and jazz. Most of the heavy metal I've heard is based on the medieval church modes. I know rock music evolved from blues; I'm saying the harmonies are basic and reflect the Baroque sound. It's a matter of personal preference to say one band is better than the other when they're all writing in the same style with the same rules.
No not all modern music derives from blues and jazz. But thanks for pointing out another that isn't based on baroque harmonies. Lots of other music is derived from folk music, quite often area specific. And then there's more abstract genres, again owing nothing to baroque. To say all bands write in the same 'style' with the same 'rules' is one of the most ignorant and ridiculous statements I have ever heard, and you should be embarrassed to have even thought that. RULES for chrissakes!!???
To clarify... you think that all bands write in the same style and with the same cough... rules? So, Beta Band and Black Flag? Godspeed You Black Emperor and Nickelback? Circulus and Styx? Espers and Kelly Clarkson? Baroque is little more than a blip in the history of world music, and to attempt credit is as the influence of all modern music is laughable.
And personal preference is correct, you laughed at mine in your first post remember. Now THAT is funny...
As at a matter of fact, I didn't laugh at anything. I'm not speaking of ALL bands. I'm talking about popular rock music. All of the radio-friendly rock music is Baroque in its harmonies and form. There's always going to be someone doing something different like Frank Zappa. But the average rock song you hear by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Nickleback, Oasis, etc are based on Baroque harmonies. That doesn't necessarily mean the writers are Baroque fans themselves.
As a matter of fact you did, or does 'lol' mean something else in your strange little world? You can't qualify your arguement, no matter how much you attempt to narrow it down to suit your ridiculous vagaries.
Now run along and watch your bouncing boob and womens changing room clips, and tacky how to pick girls up videos. Strange stuff indeed....
What do you care what I say? You talk in an arrogant, condescending tone and all of a sudden you care if someone is cocky back to you? All you have is personal attacks; you don't have any valid music criticism. What I've said over and over is that popular rock songs are conservative in their harmonies and rhythm and therefore resemble what was going on in music in the Baroque era. That's what people want to hear, tonal music with a steady beat and cautious with the dissonances.
I heard this when I was browsing CD's in HMV, first thought? Fantastic,I respect any band who is prepared to put a different swing onto a song and try something new whilst be respectful, it could have been done badly, personally as a Nirvana fan, I love it
too bad this video and maybe the venue make this sound pretty bad. I saw them recently at the Roxy in Atlanta and they covered this there, friggin awesome. LOVE THE SPREE!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
how is that nice? seeing a good some be ruined by a couple of weird ass freaks
pity there wasnt a stagedive, because that increases the chances of one of them hitting their head and coming to their senses and realize theyre in the most horrible "band" most people have ever heard...aside from panic at the disco
The Polyphonic Spree are neither a church group or a bunch of druggies. They are a fantastic music force to be reckoned with. Even if you don't like this version of Lithium, surely you can appreciate the musicians performing the song.
I feel like Nirvana is one of the most overated bands of all time and they have only reached the status they are held to now because Cobain died. This version is incredible.
GrillMan5000, at 24 years old you have no idea what Nirvana meant to the rest of us at the time they came out with Bleach and Nevermind. We were in the rock and roll dark ages when New Kids on The Block and Maria Carey ruled the airwaves and "metal" was all about hair and cheesy power ballads. Grunge, but Nirvana in particular, resurrected rock. Nirvana had reached epic status well before the suicide. For good reasons. That Tim Delaughter would cover Lithium is awesome. Wish I had seen it

AlexConley 3 years ago
this song isn't an angry. you don't need to know what the song's about anyway.
nenshoukun 3 years ago
What do you mean that this song isn't angry? Nirvana as a band pretty much invented teen angst music lol; everything they did was angry. The song is about being bi-polar; Kurt Cobain was really pissed because his lithium changed his mood so often, so he wrote a song about it made him feel. It's kinda hard to miss that if you hear the lyrics lol.
AlexConley 3 years ago
no one knows what it's about. stop speaking like you knew him personally.
nenshoukun 3 years ago 3
Nirvana invented teen angst? hahahahahaha. how old are you, 15? hahahahahaha. Teen Angst in music has been around since music has been around... nirvana invented not taking showers and pretending to not care... clearly, dave grohl has show that deep down he cares what people think, enter the shit stain known as Foo Fighters
mikeelam 3 years ago 2
Nirvana as a band pretty much invented teen angst music...
... Where can I send the dry cleaning bill? I've just laughed so hard I pissed myself. And everything they did was angry? Is angry another word for crap? Pointless and derivative cack from a band in the right place at the right time, who happened to have a reasonably intelligent and good looking front man. That's all. And Dave Grohl pisses all over Kurt Cobain.
MarkRevival 3 years ago
Okay, I'll level with you. They didn't invent it, because that is an ignorant comment. But, they were kind of the biggest band to play into that style of music (to that point). So that is all that I meant by that. Of course they didn't create it, but they did make it really profitable and successful, and I think that that is all that I meant.
AlexConley 3 years ago
lol if Nirvana was a crap band, why can't the bands today make better melodies? Kurt used parallel keys to show his blues influence. If phrasing and writing original melodies was easy, bands would be making songs that hit bigger than Smells Like Teen Spirit, but all you hear is more of the same.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
Er... lol.
MarkRevival 2 years ago
So saying the Foo Fighers piss over Nirvana is valid music criticism? Cobain structured lyrical melodies over chord progressions that were influenced by the blues music he listened to. It's not like anyone after 1994 did anything more innovative. All the rock bands continued to play diatonic music based on Baroque harmonies and some of the newer bands use an over abundance of 9th chords. Schoenberg, Charles Ives, and John cage did stuff that was way more creative almost a century ago.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
Yes it is valid. Better written, more melodic, consistent and a wider catalogue. Simple.
But you clearly don't understand anything you've written. All rock bands use the diatonic scale? What a wide and sweeping statement since diatonic means different things to different people. Depending on what's inclusive or exclusive, pitches, harmonics... And all based on baroque harmonies? You're having a laugh, right?? Schoenberg was more widely influenced by the baroque than 99% of rock bands....
MarkRevival 2 years ago
And baroque itself falls into so many different styles, and then there's variation within them! And the difference from Peri through to later composers like Perolesi shows variation and progression.
You might as well just make the statement all rock music uses notes and is based Inuit throat singing.
No why aren't you watching your bouncing boobs and listening to the diatonically baroque Manson boy?
MarkRevival 2 years ago
The fact that you resort to juvenile rhetoric is proof that there's no substance to your argument. Of course rock music is based on Baroque harmonies. When you turn on the radio and hear rock music you hear songs either in the major or minor mode, with regular phrasing. It's rare to hear a song that includes applied harmony or modulation to distant keys. A song based on a 12 tone pitch series or a system of pitch organization like the Mystic chord would never be played on mainstream radio.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
Juvenile rhetoric? You're hilarious fella, all substance and no feeling. Rarely have I read so much that means so little.
Of course rock music is based on baroque harmonies?? No it isn't generally. And are you saying that baroque composers had no influences?
Really, you should just give your head a little wobble and re-read what you've said, vagary upon vagary.
Bounce, bounce, wiggle, bounce.
MarkRevival 2 years ago
Of course Baroque composers had influences, primarily being Renaissance motets. Rock music is obviously based on Baroque harmonies and form. Rock music doesn't resemble pre-Baroque modal music, and the harmonies are too simple to be compared to Romantic or post Romantic music. The focus on consonance and regular rhythms resembles that of Baroque music.. I've never heard a popular rock song that was atonal, 12 tone, aleatoric, bitonal, or based on the whole tone scale.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
So the blues was based on baroque harmonies? I can just see Leadbelly supping gutrot, strumming away and thinking 'Blimey, this here music focuses on consonance and regular rhythms, there's that crazy baroque again!'. And jazz? Nope. And as pretty much all modern music derives from these two forms, your arguement is weak.
And you don't get out much do you....
MarkRevival 2 years ago
Not all modern music derives from blues and jazz. Most of the heavy metal I've heard is based on the medieval church modes. I know rock music evolved from blues; I'm saying the harmonies are basic and reflect the Baroque sound. It's a matter of personal preference to say one band is better than the other when they're all writing in the same style with the same rules.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
No not all modern music derives from blues and jazz. But thanks for pointing out another that isn't based on baroque harmonies. Lots of other music is derived from folk music, quite often area specific. And then there's more abstract genres, again owing nothing to baroque. To say all bands write in the same 'style' with the same 'rules' is one of the most ignorant and ridiculous statements I have ever heard, and you should be embarrassed to have even thought that. RULES for chrissakes!!???
MarkRevival 2 years ago
To clarify... you think that all bands write in the same style and with the same cough... rules? So, Beta Band and Black Flag? Godspeed You Black Emperor and Nickelback? Circulus and Styx? Espers and Kelly Clarkson? Baroque is little more than a blip in the history of world music, and to attempt credit is as the influence of all modern music is laughable.
And personal preference is correct, you laughed at mine in your first post remember. Now THAT is funny...
MarkRevival 2 years ago
As at a matter of fact, I didn't laugh at anything. I'm not speaking of ALL bands. I'm talking about popular rock music. All of the radio-friendly rock music is Baroque in its harmonies and form. There's always going to be someone doing something different like Frank Zappa. But the average rock song you hear by Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Nickleback, Oasis, etc are based on Baroque harmonies. That doesn't necessarily mean the writers are Baroque fans themselves.
MattBaumann777 2 years ago
As a matter of fact you did, or does 'lol' mean something else in your strange little world? You can't qualify your arguement, no matter how much you attempt to narrow it down to suit your ridiculous vagaries.
Now run along and watch your bouncing boob and womens changing room clips, and tacky how to pick girls up videos. Strange stuff indeed....
MarkRevival 2 years ago
What do you care what I say? You talk in an arrogant, condescending tone and all of a sudden you care if someone is cocky back to you? All you have is personal attacks; you don't have any valid music criticism. What I've said over and over is that popular rock songs are conservative in their harmonies and rhythm and therefore resemble what was going on in music in the Baroque era. That's what people want to hear, tonal music with a steady beat and cautious with the dissonances.

RebelThoughts 4 years ago
GrillMan5000, at 24 years old you have no idea what Nirvana meant to the rest of us at the time they came out with Bleach and Nevermind. We were in the rock and roll dark ages when New Kids on The Block and Maria Carey ruled the airwaves and "metal" was all about hair and cheesy power ballads. Grunge, but Nirvana in particular, resurrected rock. Nirvana had reached epic status well before the suicide. For good reasons. That Tim Delaughter would cover Lithium is awesome. Wish I had seen it
