Yes, it's more or less the same. And it's swedish. The 40mm has been pretty much the same since the first verions made in the thirties. Biggest changes has been rate of fire and size of cartridge.
The barrel has also been lengthened, the flash suppressor has been reworked a bit and i think it was the British who adapted it for mass production. (The original Swedish design had a lot of "file to fit" parts.)
The Icelandic Coast guard uses the 40mm Bofors as well. We don't really need anything else, the mere sight of the gun is enough for most illegal fishing ships in our waters.
The new ship was supposed to have a 50mm or so, something a Cod War experienced captain demanded the Government would get.
Then again, our ships (2) are very old. Financial depression is hitting us hard though, the Coast Guard is in a heap of trouble. :P
how does one join the icelandic coast guard? do you have to go to a school first or do they have a "bootcamp"? or both (must know a trade and then go to bootcamp.)
I did apply a while back and was put on a waiting list. At the moment they aren't employing more staff because the posts are fully manned.
Anyways, I don't know that much about the process of application other than that they want you to have experience on ships and there are most likely some educational courses you have to take (similar with the Rescue Unit, there you learn how to use ropes, how to manage in the wild etc.)
They get personnel through people who apply to join the Coast Guard, those people are then sent through educational courses, a school.
You can get training in deactivating explosives (there are a lot of old WW2 mines over here), you can learn how to serve on board ships, first-aid training and other things, if you apply for serving on aircraft then you get training on choppers or airplane.
I don't have full knowledge of this but I know you have to be flexible in your work.
No probs, I'm glad you're interested in my country. I've been longing to return to the States someday (Last time I was there it was in 2007 when I visited Manhattan, NY).
Even though I said that the financial depression is causing trouble for the coast guard then I should mention now that even during the fake-good years there was always financial problems with maintaining the ships and aircrafts.
That was one of the reasons I felt very suspicious about where the hell all that money was coming from during the so called Good Years but more importantly, where was it going (the hospitals didn't see much of that money either).
ya that is the Canadian Reserve's fleet of 12 patrol boats. They are actually using the bofors 40mm from WW2 in modern ships because canada does not fund its navy.
I have 40mm bofors barrels for sale, email me for price and quantity

araullo 3 months ago
@araullo I think easily being spotted was the point because it was training its important to remain visible to avoid mishaps of friendly fire

I have a question, on the newer Iceland CG ships, is the 40mm bofors gun remote controlled from the bridge or manned like it is here.

Do you have to cock the Bofors 40 mm or is it electrically fired?
M8DMAN 2 years ago
that was(is) pretty much issue on most navy ships?

Bofors is swedish right? And is this gun is more or less the same as the US used in ww2 to shoot down japanese planes in the pacific?

@seltjorn Oh so the coast guard trains you in a skill, you do not have to come in with one.
badgerattoadhall 1 year ago
@badgerattoadhall
Yeah I'm pretty sure about that. But it helps you along to have some experience beforehand like with helicopters or being on a ship.
But yeah, they do train you.
