Its not all that bad , i mean , its either Bon Jovi , one of the best rock bands in my opinion , doing a cover of another great rock band , or one of these modern "musicians" doing a cover of this . Think about it ...
its not all that bad and at least Jon has good taste, long live Lizzy and lets get them inducted into the RRHF soon they deserve to be there more than most
@HankCherry The list of bands/artists that are not in the so called R&R HoF compared to those that are (Madonna any one?) kinda gives the impression that NOT being in it is the bigger honor....
alright, yeah, the cover's not that great, but if they are playing it out of respect and love... then ya know, at least they know what greatness is and appreciate that which is lost. I'm glad he at least preempted the song with his words.
I HOPE to be listening to Lizzy in Heaven, NOT Hell. God knows the Rocker! Phil was messed up and sadly figured it out all to late, but in there was a good man with a good heart and and God is good and Phil knew that and THAT's what counts .
This isn't that great of a cover, but there's sincerity and heart in it. Jon sincerely loves Thin Lizzy and this was done shortly after Phil's death, so it was him paying tribute to a hero of his. Even if he didn't do an amazing job with the song, he put his heart and soul into it, and that alone makes it legitimate and fair. And so while this won't replace Lizzy's version on my playlist, it makes me respect Jon as a fellow Lizzy fan.

@drastemus1 Obviously this is Bon Jovi version which is worth of more than trying to imitate Thin Lizzy. I bet there were people who did not like Lizzy's version of Whiskey In The Jar saying it was more like P*** In The Head. If everything was up to these kind of Guardians Of Real Music like they think they are a lot of good music wouldn't have happened at all. Elvis combined several styles, Cream played old blues as did Led Zeppelin, Beatles was a cover band....
It was a nice tribute to Phil even if it was bad. When he sings about being down at Johnnies place. That actually happened. Phil was singing about the night he was at his mate Johnnies house party in Dublin. " If the boys wanna fight you better let em !! " that was Crumlin for ya !!!

Phils MOM should sue these plastic talk box fake rocker rippoffs. Those back up vocals are the worst Ive ever heard.Fuck I wish I was at that show for the sole purpose of egging those girly men!!
Got some bad news, Bon Jovi are way bigger than Lizzy ever were. Their music has gone downhill of late but Sambora has far better range and is a better guitarist.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yes thin lizzy are. What a stupid name for a band: Thin Lizzy. They suck don't like this or the original. And phil lynott sucked live and he wasn't that good singer Luckily he died!
And u are a fuckin' shithead that doesn't surely even know what gay means u bastard. Go and fuck yourself. As i said this isn't a good cover, maybe the original is little better but i still don't like thin lizzy they're famous just for a couple of songs. Ok maybe they don't suck but u asshole should be put into an asylum. What a fag are you.
Sambora is a generic sounding, soulless playing loser. Sambora has no originality whatsoever. Thin Lizzy were pioneers of the dual lead electric guitar style, influencing the likes of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, why dont you take a step back and think about what the fuck you just said. Bon Jovi's primary fanbase are 40 year old women. they are responsible for turning hard rock into the soulless hair metal that it was in the 80s. FUCK bon jovi and FUCK richie sambora. thin lizzy is 10x the band
So by your definition if I was to invent all guitar styles I'd be the top guitar Legend ? Using 2 guitars doesn't increase their value as songwriters or musicians. Sambora doesn't sound like anyone else, he's not the fastest guitar player but he's up there with the best and his solos unlike a lot of 70's music fits the song as opposed to a chance to show off his hammer style. He may not have invented any new tricks as in this late stage there's nothing to invent.
As for Iron Maiden, I mean please, Pavarotti sings rock, his tremelo singing is so "schooled" it's comical and it's all Warhammer fantasy-it doesn't connect with anyone. Maybe a section of Bon Jovis fan base is poor they're as quick to like them because of the lead singers looks and posturing as you are to discount them due to the same. Bon Jovis 1st six albums are full of riffs, fills and great song writing, and surely hard rock IS hard rock, Bon jovi can't "turn it" into anything-they're rock.
It seems to me that you're the only one on here defending this crapola. Did you think for a minute "Hey I might just be wrong, it really is very poor"? no evidently not. Well wake up and smell the coffee dude, it's rubbish.
Most people seem to actually judge partly on the quality of the video-quite amazing. Maybe you'd like to articulate yourself as to exactly why it's so awful ?
Well for one thing those backing vocals are really bad. Not out of tune particularly. But a *really* terrible choice of octave. (Falsetto, really...?)But to comment further would require I watch (and worse, listen, to) it again, and I really don't want to do that.
I also don't want to get into a lengthy debate about it either. Suffice it to say it's crapola, you're horribly wrong for liking it. It is Frankensong, the song that should not be. A travesty. An abhorrent abomination. ...And you have been pwned. Thank *you*, Goodnight!
You would have to listen to it again or alternatively know what the hell your talking about. To have been pawned you'd have had to have proved me wrong. As your criticism revolves around the "the backing vocals are too high" and more imaginitively it's "crapola" I think you're a long way short of pawning me. Also pawned has an "a" in it, unless you want to be a ghetto rapper and have your pants joined at the knee.
Geez,,,how come these guys cant revert back to the old dyas when the songs were cool and they sang high hamrmonies? Are they that pld where thay have to down tune everything,,,including the vocals,,,,,just listen to TLFR,,,,pure shit if you ask me.
I know what the hell the second I heard this shit I new he was going to rape a GREAT song and he did, I don't know if I can listen to the song anymore cause of this fucker
Lynott died in January 1986. Bon Jovi dedicated his encore to a tribute that same year.
The guy gets respect from ME for this. No, Bon Jovi will never replicate that awesome Lynott led foursome that we all remember.
But it is obvious that Jon Bon Jovi and his longstanding bandmates considered - and still considers - Thin Lizzy a defining musical inspiration for THEM and they pay tribute to the band to this day.
Too bad no can see that Jon kicked another great song's ass. The shite is on everyone else who continues to doubt. And here he is 22 years later... and where is everyone else? the "where are they now" tour?!?
Where is everyone else? Phil Lyon (lead vocals, bass, songwriter)of Thin Lizzy died in 1986. Thin Lizzy is recognized as the first hard rock band to employ double lead/clashing guitar harmony, that became commonplace in 80's metal"hair"bands. As for length of career saying much, Cher is going on 43 years, Duran Duran 28 years, KC & The Sunshine Band 35 years, and U2 32 years. Would you still have the same opinion if they "covered" it? I doubt Bon Jovi thinks it's better, it's a tribute to TL!
great response... you mentioned a lot of talented people. especially U2. I was referring to washed up hairbands more than anyone else. Don't know if I would feel the same if they covered it, but I would love to hear it if they did. Again, especially U2.
Thanks!Given that Bon Jovi first covered it in '86, it was probably right after Phil passed away. There is an interesting cover of the song by (of all bands) Huey Lewis & The News. I know rockers out there won't like it, but they did a great job in their own style, and they most likely did it because Huey Lewis played harmonica on some Thin Lizzy tunes. U2,might be cool if Brian Eno produced it like the "Achtung Baby" album(IMHO-U2's most solid album).Explore some Thin Lizzy songs,it's good stuff
I'm not anti-Bon Jovi either, in fact I have the debut through New Jersey. After that, they seemed to move away from the sound on those albums and progressed a little too much into a, for lack of a better term, Country Western-Rock-Ballad hybrid. Still, you have to give respect to any band that can stay together more than 12 years with the original members! And Jon gave recognition to The Raspberries!
I have everything they've ever realeased. I saw Jon on 60 minutes and he really has got it together. Your term fits them well. They went through a lot more changes after new jersey and worth looking into. They catch a lot of hell for their sound change, but the evolution is part of the journey.
As Eddie Money mentioned in an interview concerning his latest release, the Country music purchasers and charts aren't as picky about a performer's looks or music style. They'll accept songs for the strength of the music and not necessarily image alone. That's probably why Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and other bands are doing the cross-over albums/songs. Also, Bon Jovi members were heavily involved in the Bo Bice (American Idol) release (if my aging memory serves correctly).
Yeah thats true. I would be the last to argue about Bon Jovi's commercial popularity. But they do a great job usually , while I wasn't a big fan of the "have a nice day" cd. But it does seem as though country isnt too particular. Jovi has been knockin on that door for years... see "blaze of glory" or "wanted" or "stick to your guns"
Bit of a joke seeing these clowns butchering a Lizzy classic....they should stick to playing bubble gum music, appearing on Oprah, and leave quality guitarists like Gorham, Roberston, and Gary Moore to do the business.......
despite what everybody thinks bon jovi did great job and phil lynott would have been proud of them

Congrats, you seem to be the only person who's been able to articulate in a matter of fact and sensible manner why you don't appreciate this rendition..I would say your secondary points are pretty much undeniable.

Their music has gone downhill of late but Sambora has far better range and is a better guitarist.

bon jovi are GAY
thin lizzy are not

A statement like that doesn't show up your appreciation of talent very well. I don't think Phill would be impressed by this comeback

yes thin lizzy are. What a stupid name for a band: Thin Lizzy. They suck don't like this or the original. And phil lynott sucked live and he wasn't that good singer Luckily he died!

and yet phil lynnot wasn't a fucking retard like you
Steve92crue 2 years ago

JIMMYJIBLETS 3 years ago
So by your definition if I was to invent all guitar styles I'd be the top guitar Legend ? Using 2 guitars doesn't increase their value as songwriters or musicians. Sambora doesn't sound like anyone else, he's not the fastest guitar player but he's up there with the best and his solos unlike a lot of 70's music fits the song as opposed to a chance to show off his hammer style. He may not have invented any new tricks as in this late stage there's nothing to invent.
adm924s 3 years ago 2
As for Iron Maiden, I mean please, Pavarotti sings rock, his tremelo singing is so "schooled" it's comical and it's all Warhammer fantasy-it doesn't connect with anyone. Maybe a section of Bon Jovis fan base is poor they're as quick to like them because of the lead singers looks and posturing as you are to discount them due to the same. Bon Jovis 1st six albums are full of riffs, fills and great song writing, and surely hard rock IS hard rock, Bon jovi can't "turn it" into anything-they're rock.
adm924s 3 years ago 3
@JIMMYJIBLETS Idiotic comment.

It seems to me that you're the only one on here defending this crapola. Did you think for a minute "Hey I might just be wrong, it really is very poor"? no evidently not. Well wake up and smell the coffee dude, it's rubbish.
GremlinAndy 3 years ago
Most people seem to actually judge partly on the quality of the video-quite amazing. Maybe you'd like to articulate yourself as to exactly why it's so awful ?
adm924s 3 years ago
Well for one thing those backing vocals are really bad. Not out of tune particularly. But a *really* terrible choice of octave. (Falsetto, really...?)But to comment further would require I watch (and worse, listen, to) it again, and I really don't want to do that.
GremlinAndy 3 years ago
I also don't want to get into a lengthy debate about it either. Suffice it to say it's crapola, you're horribly wrong for liking it. It is Frankensong, the song that should not be. A travesty. An abhorrent abomination. ...And you have been pwned. Thank *you*, Goodnight!
GremlinAndy 3 years ago
You would have to listen to it again or alternatively know what the hell your talking about. To have been pawned you'd have had to have proved me wrong. As your criticism revolves around the "the backing vocals are too high" and more imaginitively it's "crapola" I think you're a long way short of pawning me. Also pawned has an "a" in it, unless you want to be a ghetto rapper and have your pants joined at the knee.

How can anyone get down on Bon Jovi for this?
Lynott died in January 1986. Bon Jovi dedicated his encore to a tribute that same year.
The guy gets respect from ME for this. No, Bon Jovi will never replicate that awesome Lynott led foursome that we all remember.
But it is obvious that Jon Bon Jovi and his longstanding bandmates considered - and still considers - Thin Lizzy a defining musical inspiration for THEM and they pay tribute to the band to this day.
All good IMHO.

Too bad no can see that Jon kicked another great song's ass. The shite is on everyone else who continues to doubt. And here he is 22 years later... and where is everyone else? the "where are they now" tour?!?
always97 3 years ago
Where is everyone else? Phil Lyon (lead vocals, bass, songwriter)of Thin Lizzy died in 1986. Thin Lizzy is recognized as the first hard rock band to employ double lead/clashing guitar harmony, that became commonplace in 80's metal"hair"bands. As for length of career saying much, Cher is going on 43 years, Duran Duran 28 years, KC & The Sunshine Band 35 years, and U2 32 years. Would you still have the same opinion if they "covered" it? I doubt Bon Jovi thinks it's better, it's a tribute to TL!
artfuldodgersite 3 years ago
great response... you mentioned a lot of talented people. especially U2. I was referring to washed up hairbands more than anyone else. Don't know if I would feel the same if they covered it, but I would love to hear it if they did. Again, especially U2.
always97 3 years ago
Thanks!Given that Bon Jovi first covered it in '86, it was probably right after Phil passed away. There is an interesting cover of the song by (of all bands) Huey Lewis & The News. I know rockers out there won't like it, but they did a great job in their own style, and they most likely did it because Huey Lewis played harmonica on some Thin Lizzy tunes. U2,might be cool if Brian Eno produced it like the "Achtung Baby" album(IMHO-U2's most solid album).Explore some Thin Lizzy songs,it's good stuff
artfuldodgersite 3 years ago
yeah... not a big huey lewis fan. But, I honestly do like the Thin Lizzy. Just a huge Jovi fan though.
always97 3 years ago
I'm not anti-Bon Jovi either, in fact I have the debut through New Jersey. After that, they seemed to move away from the sound on those albums and progressed a little too much into a, for lack of a better term, Country Western-Rock-Ballad hybrid. Still, you have to give respect to any band that can stay together more than 12 years with the original members! And Jon gave recognition to The Raspberries!
artfuldodgersite 3 years ago
I have everything they've ever realeased. I saw Jon on 60 minutes and he really has got it together. Your term fits them well. They went through a lot more changes after new jersey and worth looking into. They catch a lot of hell for their sound change, but the evolution is part of the journey.
always97 3 years ago
As Eddie Money mentioned in an interview concerning his latest release, the Country music purchasers and charts aren't as picky about a performer's looks or music style. They'll accept songs for the strength of the music and not necessarily image alone. That's probably why Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and other bands are doing the cross-over albums/songs. Also, Bon Jovi members were heavily involved in the Bo Bice (American Idol) release (if my aging memory serves correctly).
artfuldodgersite 3 years ago
Yeah thats true. I would be the last to argue about Bon Jovi's commercial popularity. But they do a great job usually , while I wasn't a big fan of the "have a nice day" cd. But it does seem as though country isnt too particular. Jovi has been knockin on that door for years... see "blaze of glory" or "wanted" or "stick to your guns"
always97 3 years ago
yeah, phil lynnot also helped huey get his career started so he owed it to phil. Huey Lewis and The News are a great band no doubt about it!

Bit of a joke seeing these clowns butchering a Lizzy classic....they should stick to playing bubble gum music, appearing on Oprah, and leave quality guitarists like Gorham, Roberston, and Gary Moore to do the business.......
