I would love it if he had tried to join in with us at the Hastings reenactment this year. I'd have sent him down the hill towards the silly Normans and watch him get his arse handed to him.
peasants were mostly used as laborers. Most like people with long weapons (spears and longaxes) would stay in the back and help kill while the sword and shield men protect and attack or used as flankers or gap smashers sorta calvary how a cavalry unit is used. Watch SCA men fight or shieldwall reenactment fight, they both model their tactics after dark age warfare. Heck Look up the Bodican rebellion and that's show how berserk open order gets ya killed pretty quick.
Considering that spears are one of the easiest weapons to learn how to use, the fact that they excel in group combat and historical evidence that most Vikings didn't just run up to a enemy army with their axes swinging but marched in formation in a shieldwall with the long weapons in the back or flanks I think it's reasonable to say that going berserk is on most occasions a bad tactic also I've read many articles than suggest until the advent of the pike.
That only works on novices. I've done and you end up getting spear in the head. Also, both were unarmored so and didn't want to kill one another so it's a bad test.
@PJDAltamirus0425 your average man on the battlefield was an untrained peasant and facing a seasoned warrior doing this would be terrifying. I believe that they worked in groups as well with a main one attacking and others keeping counter attacks of him
There's no way to defend since the spear guy's weapon was sharp. All he could do was kill him or run. Obviously there's really only once choice there...
Wow. We have just seen a demonstration of what happens when an untrained man with a spear is set upon by a clueless knave armed with no regard for his training partner's safety and an axe.
If you're really curious - keep the shield on your front forearm, and receive the idiotic charge on the point of your spear. Your only problem will be getting the fool off your spear in time to protect yourself against other opponents.
Two reasons: because he would kill him or, at least, injure him since morons forgot to bring any protection against REAL, SHARPENED weapon. Damn PVC zweihänder can break your arm or head, not to say fingers or nose.
Second - because he is obviously a pussy... But I don't blame him. :]
I'm curious do you think Warrcraft had reached its pinnacle in romen times and that later European examples were simply less well-trained brawlers allowing for more examples of let's say axes like it shows what I mean is you are making use of tools that they have available to them like axis I don't know I'm just curious for someone's opinion
Just after the Roman Empire fell it may have been like that. But still a bow was a hunting tool and then it came in on its own, you get the longbow, crossbow, and horse bow. While an axe may seem brutish, it has an advantage over a sword imo. Axes like maces are made to crush bones even if protected by plate, and if you're an unarmored soldier...
For Europe I would agree with you, but only during the Early Period. As for Egypt and the Seljuk Empire, they used finesse tactics over brawling.
Well, those less well-trained brawlers sacked the Rome, crowned their own king as a King of all Romans so it is pretty much obvious what works better. The fact is, aside from Hannibal and Pyr noone defeated Romans BC in the full scale battle. Perhaps Parthians, but I can't clearly remember those campains.
First "barbarian" victory since the conquest of Gaul was at Teutoburg forest where Arminius lured Varius towards the northern Germania and ambushed him at the middle of
the forest where they couldn't assume any formations. With large shields and heavy armors, surprised, they stood no chance. Basically, their training killed them. They weren't thought how to fight one-on-one while barbarians knew only how to fight in that way and soon everybody deployed similar tactics.
Speaking of weapons, gladius is an awesome weapon. Works in virtually every situations. But I was boring you for long enough.
you can be able to defend yourself against the axewielder, but he was already to close and the spearguys pants was already to wet. And do note, the spearguy is unexperienced. With an experienced spearfighter the berserkr was already a doughnut..
Axe is a pretty screwed weapon to fight against, imo. Not agile or accurate but dents any armour, except, maybe the breastplate, though it shatters bones underneath lightly armored parts such as hands, legs, collar bones, etc. And it's virtually unstoppable unleashed in continuous flurry. Though it requires some strength and tremendous stamina fairly simple weapon to use.
this test was stupid, spear would have stopped the axeman dead in this situation. Why do you think pikemen were so successful. like right up until gun powder, wars were fought with pointy bits on long sticks.
@OdolWAAAAGH Actually, it wasn't until the rise of gunpowder that large blocks of pikemen became fashionable. Before that it was certainly spear&shield, though. However, I think this test is not a very good representation of any situation but one where the spearman is completely unexperienced. :P
@FrisianDude Unless you go way way back to the Greek phalanx. Or, more similar to the pike-block would be the Macedonian phalanx with their long sarissas. The Flemish, Swiss, and Scots also used pikes pretty effectively, if I'm not mistaken.
@ruebuscm The Flemish, Swiss and Scots did use them effectively, but iIrc that was at the rise of gunpowder, wasn't it? But yeah, I didn't take the Macedonian Sarrissa in account, those are quite pikey, yeah.
Indeed, that's the only way to stop an axeman. But if you fail, he'll past your best distance and force you to run backwards, while he runs forward. Technically, best legs win the fight here. Outside of formation spear is not that great against heavy weapons. Against normal swords you can use blunt end, grab spear closer to the head, even parry then drop it and initiate grapple but it just doesn't work against axes, great hammers and great swords.
Now, let's give him a two-handed axe for that extra reach, momentum and intimidation factor.
Also, while the spear has more reach than a one-handed axe, if the axeman gets close enough the spearman is in serious trouble because he needs to drop his spear, grab his secondary and try to defend himself - all the while the berserker is chopping pieces off you. :D
um im pretty sure that in a real fight the guy with the spear would have just stabbed him before he could get close. most people would run too if some crazy guy who thinks hes a viking was trying to break your sheild with an axe and you couldn't fight back
The spear guy partially feared to impale his opponent, but still, a fear for your own skin would be multiplied tenfolds if he actually fought a real axeman that tries to spilt his skull in half.
I would love it if he had tried to join in with us at the Hastings reenactment this year. I'd have sent him down the hill towards the silly Normans and watch him get his arse handed to him.
