Does anyone know what the technical ballet term for those hops are? Like the french term? I've been looking everywhere and can only see people calling them "hops en pointe" which doesn't sound quiiiite official to me.

Any info?

@Sei1863 they are called ballones ( i don't think that i spelled it correctly , but that's how they are called..! ) you can do them on releve and on pointe....as svetlana demonstrates here so gracefully ..!

Good Idea make her better impression as the act1st stage.

Some times I show like same action on Gizel , but mostly dancers hand free or hands free after half passed of the dance daoughter. She could make a chaming daughter by this chaming acton.

@bozemandude I'm not sure how to explain it more then that. It's graceful but ballarinas started out as prostitutes basically, and it's still about tits and arse as well as beauty. I guess the dichotomy is what creates the pointlessness.

@elenore88 There was much more going on during the development of Romantic ballet than just "tits and ass". There was an element of eroticism to dress at the time - not just in ballet - that resulted from changes in France and Europe, and it was not the vulgar erotiscism you're thinking of. Taglioni was praised for her image of purity and femininity - she was not a prostitute or anything close. There is much, much more to the development of Romantic ballet than you realize.

She is a talented dancer so of course I am not insulting her talent as I love to watch her, but she is knocking (or it appears she is) her foot into her hand at the beginning of the variation, and in general I prefer Vishneva's Giselle to hers. A portrait of what classical ballet should be in Giselle is Alicia Alonso, not Zakharova.

Zakharova is one of the most gifted, talented dancer. She dance beautifully and this is probably the cutest Giselle, but too cute. Anyway her dance is always so pleasant to eyes. Thank you very much. This brightened my day.

She is intensely beautiful and her dancing is legendary. Her Giselle is not one of my favourites though because while her first act is aesthetically incredibly beautiful, so poised and so full of gracious energy, it doesn't seem to convey the gently hysterical fragility of a woman likely to die of a broken heart. But I am not bashing her: like I said, she's a perfect dancer, and how deeply she goes into the character is and remains a matter of taste.

She is not doing pirouettes. Those turns are piques. Piques always start with one foot and frequently travel, while pirouettes start with both feet in a plie and should never travel.

Toe hops themselves are not that difficult, but looking as beautiful as she did while doing them definitely is.

Nah, it's actually pretty easy and painless if you have strong feet. It's the upper body posture that makes it a bit hard to pull off. You don't want to look tense or show effort!
