I love Lotte Lehmann here, but my all time favourite Sieglinde is Cheryl Studer. Sadly, Jessye Norman is one of my least favourite Sieglindes, I simply do not understand the attraction.
Maybe not the most beautiful voice, but Lotte Lehmann stands out artistically, dramatically and spiritually - larger than life, even compared to these other great divas.
@mannail888 Fremstad. Flagstad's voice is better suited to Brunhilde. By the time she was recording Wagner, the voice was too matronly to sound like a young woman. But there is nothing wrong with Flagstad's Sieglinde, it's just a preference among top notch singers. I still think that no one does the beautiful, round, covered vowels in Du bist der Lenz like Fremstad.
@mannail888 Generally , I prefer Fremstad, mostly due to the awful quality of the voice reproduction on the Lehmann and Nordica discs. Nordica was thoroughly dissatisfied with her recordings (according to Herman Klein, who was there when she made them). Only the tiny samples from the Mapleson cylinders allow us a glimpse of how magnificent her sound must have been.
toutes excellentes ! Regine, Gre, Lotte...
toutes differentes

Hmmm.....Jessye Norman. Lovely rich voice. Is Seiglinde supposed to be bigger than Hundig, though? Just asking.

Very interesting - all wonderful in different ways. My vote goes to Nina Stemme with Lotte second.

Wonderful video. Thanks.

Crespin is probably my favorite, but Rysanek, Brouwenstein (who officially has the hardest name to spell EVER) and Lehmann are also fabulous.

No contest here, Lotte Lehmann wins in every department; timbre, understanding, phrasing, nuance, interpretive insight, you name it.

@mannail888 I would trade Fremstad's beautiful legato and round vowels for Lehmann's breathless approach anytime.

@operamark1 Since you're so well-versed in the history of vocal arts, how does Nodica and Lili Lehmann compare to Fremstad?
