@FlyingRes The entire point of the series is Utena resquing Anthy. The only way she can do this is through love. Romantic love. And yes, the creator of the series means it to be so. Get a clue.

@ArcaJ Actually, the Creator's word on the subject has been many different answers. While I personally do think that you'd be daft to believe she doesn't develop a deep affection for Anthy, the 'Word of God' is apparently inconclusive.

Not saying I disagree with you about Utena loving Anthy, just the creator's word aspect. Oh, and TECHNICALLY there's nothing that require's romantic love. Utena essentially gave Anthy the courage to break the abuse cycle, none of which REQUIRES love. It helps.

@ArcaneArts The "Word of God" isn't inconclusive at all. Ikuhara states it bluntly in the CPM commentaries. Utena and Anthy were meant as a romance, and he always envisioned them as such. The only reason he couldn't show it more clearly was because Saito Chiho, the manga author, was vocally against it. But he got to do what he wanted with the movie.

@katielynn90210 well you could say utena was himemiya's vehicle to transport her out of that world where she had to be a princess who was fought over in duels, passed around from master to master with no free will. The castle represents the institution of marrage and living "happily ever after" but that never was or ever will be reality. I think scott pilgrim vs. the world is also extremely symbolic and similar in the idea of the chosen love of the heroin must be better and beat all others.

@swanlake89 The whole point of Utena is to systematicaly clue girls in that fairy tales and the idea of some prince taking you to live in a castle happily ever after is no way to live. The idea that girls encase themselves in a coffin, that they are already dead when they commit themselves to this foolish idea that allowing a prince to rule their lives as if it were ordained by some higher power. In the end it was very hard for Himemiya to change. It was a happy ending still Anthy left.

The princess is the one to be saved and summit to the prince her savior and the domonate force in the relationship. Utena wants to be a prince herself meaning she wants to be an equal.
