"I was reaching for the phone to call my lawyer!" LOL. I doubt thats true-sounds like he's over-exaggerating to get his point across that he likes red dwarf. You only have to stare at the screen for 5 seconds before the canned laughter kicks in, to realize that its not a serious sci fi. Even if it was, just because its in space, its a rip off? :D Patrick Stewart is still great though, in (arguably) the best trek, and should be in the new dwarf which is set for this summer as a total nut case :D
Wait...did he say he was about to pick up the phone to call his lawyer? Why would it be within HIS right to sue Red Dwarf for 'ripping off' Star Trek...surely if anyone had the right to sue RD for that it would've been the producers of Star Trek and not Stewart?
I was just thinking the exact same thing. Now I'm thinking could that be why we lack new sci-fi nowadays - if it's set on a spaceship, its copyrighted (or the TV equivalent)?
@SciStarborne In the A-Z of Red Dwarf, they follow it with a scene from Gunmen of the Apocalypse. I always assumed that it was the scene Stewart was referring to, because the whole holodeck-time-travel-westerny thing was very Star Trekish. Of course, Red Dwarf handles things differently.
haha its good that he liked it. i always thought TNG crew had plenty of funny moments. i wouldn't call myself a dedicated "Trekkie" but ive always liked TNG because its not so serious and it has all these great likable characters.
@zzebowa... 1st of all if you're going to slag off anyone, make sure there's nothing you can be pulled on... like your spelling you muppet!!! Go back to school & come back when you've learnt something!!!!
Actually, I think he's talking about the scene in "The Last Day" when everyone woke up after the party. Kryten does go into a little monologue that DOES sound like it's coming straight from "Star Trek" before Dave completely undercuts it.
Another, could be the escape scene in "Rimmerworld" where Dave rattles off this complex escape plan and Kryten undercuts him.
Point is that there are a few points where they sound pretty Star Trek-ish so, no doubt, it was probably one of those that Stewart saw.
I mean, he could have been ringing just to find out what the story was. Whether or not there was a case there. Ringing your lawyer doesn't immediately mean I;m Suing.
red dwarf ROCKS!! how can American dads Stans boss be watching red dwarf? Red Dwarf is a timeless classic, I love the show! but im not very keen on star trek! lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What, so any science fiction show he's not familiar with is a rip-off of TNG? That's quite an ego you have there, Mr. Stewart. If anyone should take credit for TNG, it's the writers, not you. And Lister's a million times hotter than Old Man Picard. You suck ass.
It must have been "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" that he thought that it ripped off "A Fistful of Datas".
Though the difference between REd Dwarf and Next Generation is that you can't have a character like Dave Lister or Arnold Rimmer. For one Lister would be forced off the Enterprise. For Rimmer, the crew would find him too obnoxious for the crew. I know that Worf would have kicked his ass within the first ten minutes of meeting him.
Before pulling a pompous high horse act, I think SOMEBODY want to check WHO WAS FIRST with some of the ideas that were DISCOVERED on Red Dwarf, smeg head!
@eminemdisstopia Yeah it seems like the kind of thing an actor living in a bubble would do doesnt it, call his lawyer, over what, even if the show was a rip off it wouldve been given legal permission to be on screen so what would the exact legal argument, that "theyre doing my stuff?" lol Apart from the fact that Red Dwarf first aired in 1988 which was years before bloody Star Trek next generation so he wouldnt have had a leg to stand on in any case lol
@ZoahLord lol My argument is still sound, RD was inspired by two films, Dark Star about a bunch of misfits stranded in space in about 1977, and Alien 1 which I believe was 1980 and featured a guy in a Hawiin shirt like Lister wears in series 1 and also featured a cat, apart from these 2 films the RD irst materialised as a radio play starring its single title character Dave and Holly in 1982, all this stuff still predating Next Gen by years.....
@ZoahLord .....and even if we dont take those into account RD the TV series as we know it was ready for production by 1985 it was only short sighted BBC execs that didnt see it bloom until filming dates which wouldve been 1987, then transmission dates finally being 1988, I think all those things proove RD was little influenced by Star Trek, certainly not Next Gen which is just a rehash of the old ST anyway, nothing particualrly new in itself.
I know a further conection between Red Dwarf and Star Trek TNG. Danny John Jules and Gates McFadden both worked on the film Labyrinth. They are both also in the making of extra on the DVD, but only breifly, don't blink.
True, none of the actors from Red Dwarf had cameo's in any Trek series, there was one 'easter egg' Red Dwarf cameo that aired only briefly in various DS9 episodes.
On the Promenade in DS9, office 02-842, belonged to The Jupiter Mining Corporation, which was a heavy 'back bone' in the Red Dwarf series.
So, really, Red Dwarf didn't go totally unnoticed in the USA.

I cant say i blame Patrick for accidently thinking of Red Dwarf as a rip off of Star Trek : the Next Generation . There was an episode of T.N.G. set on the Enterprise-D's Holodeck which did invlolve a Wild West theme , just like Red Dwarf's Gunman of the Apocalype , so it's easy to think it's a rip-off if you havint watched Red Dwarf from the very begining .

It's funny because Star Trek TNG blatantly steals the entire plot of the Red Dwarf episode "Thanks For The Memory". I love both shows, but still.
