If Lee hadn't have opened the gates he wouldn't have had a chance. After he used the Secondary Lotus, he was getting far more tired faster and wouldn't have been able to continue, and before that, he was unable to actually hurt Gaara.

And since Gaara naturally has more endurance and energy at his disposal, in addition to a relentless ranged attack that didn't seem to cost much, Lee would definitely have lost a battle of attrition.

This battle was probably one of the most epic battles in the history of naruto. I still feel chills in the back when watching it. My eyes fill with tears from the epicness. From the begining to the end its intense and keeps you watching. The begining the it seems that gaara is untouchable to the moment when rocklee removes the heave leg enchants and surprises everyone. then a nice intense battle with awesome moves.
