A lot of people can sing this song well. They sing the words and they hit the notes and it's pretty. Jeff found this song's soul. The love, the ecstasy, the profound loss of a broken heart--he doesn't just sing it. On some deep, divine and tragically beautiful level, the song bares it's soul through him.
I'd never heard of Jeff Buckley until I googled "Hallelujah" and Jeff returned lots of hits.
I listened. I was captivated. His voice is compelling, evocative. His talent with the guitar blended with the way he covers this song is as close to something that I can only call 'divine' as I've ever heard.
His music continues to answer the call of millions of spirits. After reading his bio, I feel there was clearly a reason for his untimely death: US.
What a loss... and superfrenchfrys, no it wasn't. I believe it was an accidental drowning. The first time I heard him sing this song, I didn't even know who he was, let alone that he had passed. I would have given almost anything to see him in concert! He was an amazing musician and singer, he put sooo much heart and soul into his music. RIP, Jeff.

@aliakbar515, This is a Leonard Cohen song. He is Jewish and draws a lot of inspiration from the Hebrew Bible. His is not very religious, though. You might also be interested in his song "Who by Fire."
Brother, man you did a great job singing this song. I hope you are in heaven and playing for the angels and our Lord, God almighty. I hope we can sing this song together, I'd love to sing with you. God speed Jeff...
This song is Magnificent and Buckley's performance is superb! It has nothing to do with religion. It is about love and god between human beings nature.
Islam is a religion. But why do so many Muslim people have so much hatred and anger, killing brothers and sisters in the name of Islam. See September 11th, see Libya, Syria, see buses and cafes exploded buy suicide bombers in Israel murdering women, children, old and young Innocent people. Calling: "Allah ho Akbar". Make love no wars!
@yoyopepe5466 their brain washed, on Islam religion there is no such thing ''Kill'' it only says ''Forgive'' but some idiots killing and they are thinking it is something good for their religion but I'm a muslim and I know killing is wrong whatever it's for.
Islam's slogan is ''Don't force anyone to accept your religion''
I just can't help it but to sing along and cries at the same time. This version of this song is just too beautiful. Totally a great way to release my tension, especially the last hallelujah shout. :)
All Jeff Buckley and music fans...type in 'Grace in the studio' and watch the clip. It will blow your fucking mind. The control and power of this guys voice is incredible.
this is the most sorrowful yet sexiest version of this song..like the way he expressed it, the love, pain, and how he screamed like orgxsm near the end.
It's so sad to think that this great artist died the year I was born so I was never able to see him live Which I would pay anything to. The saddest part is some of my friends dont even know who Jeff buckley was, they dont know what true beuty is.
@aliakbar515 This song is not about religion but that's a common mistake. It's actually a love song song and it talks about how loving someone so much can feel like a spiritual experience.
@Mellie Right, but the story of King David and Bathsheba from the Bible are used to illustrate that point. Religious stories are often used to point out universal truths, that's why they've been passed on for generations and told over and over.
@Briavel1 Yes but like you said, the story of David and Bathsheba are simply used to illustrate the point of the song. The song itself is not about religion or spirituality. It's about loving someone so deeply that it feels like a spiritual experience which is the point of the biblical comparison and of course why the song is entitled Hallelujah.
@aliakbar515 thank you for your comment, but if Islam doesn't hate anyone then why does islam say that all non-believers (infidels) must be converted to islam or killed? (many muslims have told me this)
@LowCostVideo well is their desicion to converted to islam or not is their choice cuz islam's prophet never teach his ummah to kill someone just beacause their not islam or they doesnt want to go to islam religion
yes u might hear that a lot but thats not the real islam
is the muslim people that have no brains and stupid mine(just think violance)
@LowCostVideo pff who told you that? Kill that person :P :D there is no such thing like that, it is just stupid people's idea
as I said before, islam's slogan is ''Don't force anyone to accept your religion'' islam based on this, %0,99 of muslims kill people for islam and it is totally wrong, stop thinking like ''All muslims are terrorist'' the terrorist's brain washed with stupid ideas.
@aliakbar515 I've seen plenty of muslims hating on homosexuals... In The Netherlands, a criticaster of Islam was stabbed to death in broad daylight by a muslim. Islam doesn't hate anyone? Then there sure are a lot of muslims who interpret its message wrong.

All the religion have their dumb fanatic asshole that tend to interpret wrong message or other totally at the letter when maybe it's just an allegory .
@shennema If god is with Jeff Buckley, god killed Jeff Buckley.
Isn't it better to think of a barren sphere of rock spinning in the blackness of space around a non-descript star, lost in a sea of other stars, themselves invisible in a sea of galaxies, whose meteor-scarred surface fostered Life that would eventually stand upright, turning twigs into Telecasters some 4 billion years later which - for a moment of time so brief - allowed one of those lives to show us exactly what it is to be human?
I just love how the lyrics are unique and hard to understand, but it all just works together, and you magically understand what its about.

i like the song but im not a huge fan of his voice.seems really week.still good.thats my opinion so if anyone wants to message me back saying how much of a cunt i am.dont bother
Love this song. So sad that he died. I have not heard of him before today. Or maybe I heard his songs but did not know who was singing. At the time if his death I had a 1 and 5 year so most of the songs I listened to then were from Disney movies. Any way great version of a great song.
Does anyone think that the 'hallelujah' at 5:43 signifies the entire emotion that Leonard Cohen was trying convey in the song. The idea that even in the worst of times you have to fight to say 'hallelujah'
Why have so many people tried to ruin this song with their shitty cover version... what? I have to wade through all the crap to find the only one I want to listen to. Enough is enough... step away from the cake an make your own.
I think no one can hate Jeff Buckley, the ones who hate it are just jealous. I'm a huge fan, really since a long time and when he recorded this song at the final version he just said : "That really suck, not happy 'bout it, just going to do it again and again.." so before sayin you dont like it just think 'bout it and click the like button.
chillingly beautiful.
