Thanks for your help on this subject. As I'm not the only one with this problem, I decided to give it one last go. I removed both Openshot and Kdnlive from my Ubuntu setup. I then installed Kdnlive and tried to run it. I got the same problem.

I then installed Openshot. That ran witout any problem.

I've now given up and will wait until the Kdenlive guys come up with a simple solution. Life is too short for this.

    Thanks again.

    Tony

  • I went to the kdenlive website an installed Kdenlive 0.8.2.1 which seems to be the latest release and dated dec 2011. I'll look for the Bzr version

  • @tmfarnham there should be a link to the source in Launchpad.

  • Openshot was already installed and working fine.

  • @tmfarnham ok then apparently it is a problem with kdenlive itself. Did you try to see if there is a PPA for a newer version? Another option would be to install the Bzr version.

  • I've just removed Kdenlive and re installed it using Synapic. I get the same problem.

Time to give up I think for the time being.

    Thanks for the help.

  • @tmfarnham try also installing openshot...it uses MLT

  • MLT not there on Synaptic list. My version of Kdenlive is 8. I installed it using Ubuntu Software Centre. I will un install it and the re install with Synaptic.

  • Now I'm struggling. I've installed Synaptic. but can't find mlt-0.7.8Tar.gz. in the listings. Nor can I work out how to point Synaptic at my Downloads folder where I have the downloaded file.

I'm not normally stupid, so am I missing somethiong?

  • @tmfarnham look for MLT in synaptic not mlt-0.7.8Tar.gz... of openshot is installed and working then you may have a buggy kdenlive version... I have run into that problem as well

  • Hi - more questions.

I've installed Kdenlive and get the common problem of "Fatal Error MLT's SDL module not found". The various blogs on this subject are not very helpful, so I turn to you.

I am runnung Ubuntu 11.10, and have downloaded mlt-0.7.8tar.gz.

As I am relatively new to Linux is there a simple way of installing the MTL file and getting Kdenlive up and running?

  • @tmfarnham it is best to install MLT from Synaptic, Openshot also installs MLT as it is a dependency. Since I recommend using openshot for rendering your kdenlive projects, I will suggest installing openshot. you should not run into the module not found afterwards.

  • Thanks

As you said before "Experimentation is the key"

  • I had Ubuntu Linux on an old and slow laptop before I got the T400. I tried Kdenlive then, but wasn't impressed. It may have been that the laptop wasn't up to it.

I'll probably still do my main editing with Pinnacle, but OpenShot looks like a good solution for the times when I'm away from base. Arizona should generate lots of video.

I'll have another look at Kdenlive.

  • @tmfarnham Kdenlive has made a number of improvements. I use it for precision video editing.... it's renderer leaves a lot to be desired so I render my Kdenlive projects in Openshot.

  • Thanks for uploading this video. I've just aquired my son's cast off lenovo T400 laptop which I will take on a trip to Arizona in March (I'm based in Surrey England).

My desktop is running Windows 7, and I use Pinnacle Studio Plus 12 for editing.

So my only problem was to select a video editing package for the Lenovo. I have had a couple of days using Openshot and am impressed. However it wasn't until I watched your video on YouTube that I realised just how versatile it is.

  • @tmfarnham It is a nice entry level editor. Kdenlive is another editor for linux that gives you even more power... experimentation is key!

  • Thanks bro you really helped me out!!!!!

  • @KingCuba0731 glad you liked that... I have several other video editing tutorials you can check out and there will be more in the future...

  • Great video. Inspired me to start creating videos.

  • @charliemoss check out the clips in my "Video editing playlist"

  • @LinuxSpatry Already on it. Great evening viewing. I love all you videos but the tutorial videos are the best.

  • @charliemoss Glad you find them useful! enjoy!

  • OMG you smoking !?

  • @456thevineeth I am trying to quit... dirty habit

  • @LinuxSpatry LOL ! you should

  • Thanks for the info! I just started using, almost gave up on, Openshot. Watching your vid, I understand its buggy on slower equipment (what, am I just stupid). Gotta be patient with it. No "click-click-click-click-click-click" or your done! PS;Congrats on the equipment donation-early christmass!

  • @ralph1bart It is especially tough when screen-casting and editing at the same time LOL

  • Very nicely done. Thanks!

  • spatry in the great outdoors! nice vid man

  • Thank you!I'll try it out

  • Loved this tutorial! On the green screen you can find a poor boy's version Green Screen at Walmart or other store by purchasing a SOLID no pattern green Bed Sheet & hang it behind you. Red tends to compete with flesh tones, so yeah - find a cheap Green Bed Sheet the size you need. i built a take-a-part PVC frame for mine - unfortunately havent used it much. I REALLY wanna give OpenShot a go and see if it keys out the green better than Corel VideoStudio X3. Make sure the sheet isnt a drab green.

  • I have been using Openshot as my main video editor but didn't know how much it could do! many thanks!! really helpful

  • You're making these great videos here on a single core processor? I hope Santa will grant every wishes you have!

  • What desktop recorder are you using right now? I'm still finding the best out there and can you recommend something?

  • @rayyanputra Kazaam

  • OpenShot is an okay software, but I wish they would make it possible to save effect templates. That would make things so much easier.

  • Thanks for this useful video.. even though, i'm not going to use linux anytime soon until they fix that wireless problem when it's WPA-Personal they always ask for the connection key

  • @kamranm1200 Hmmm I am using WPA-Personal and it does not prompt me for a password everytime. I have disabled the keyring as I am the only person using my computer. I do have this set-up to auto connect.

  • @kamranm1200 Once you get connected, go to wireless connection settings and mark "allow this connection to all users" - simple as that.

  • @kamranm1200 Never had this issue before, did you check the connect automatically box?

  • @fatriff Yes but it won't connect!!!

  • Great video Spatry, thanks for teaching me all the new tricks! ;) I'll be sure to use them sometime!

  • @Live4TheGame1 Now you do not have to make videos in Windows anymore... RIGHT?
