  • They still work well today!!!!

  • Wow! The 17 inch costed $3299!!! Lol i got a 17 inch PowerBook g4 exact model he was presenting off Craigslist for $200. xD

  • Gah, I miss him. R.I.P. Steve 

  • REVOLUTIONARY!

  • My first Mac was a g4 PowerBook I bought in early '05. It still runs.

  • RIP Steve Jobs

  • So Apple's had already come up with a "Netbook" way back in the day with their 12" powerbook

  • To be honest, the 12" PowerBook G4 reminds me of an aluminum version of the iBook G4, but only made a few years earlier.

  • The G4s were fast processors, arguably faster then the Intel chips during this era. This thing was hardly a netbook.

  • 1799 is an awful lot for a netbook

  • @varun96p economy was considerably better during those times.

  • 1799 for that?

    "Don't know if want..."

  • Apple has really came down in price lol. The 11.6" MacBook Air is just better while weighing WAY less and cutting the thickness in half.......at the Airs thickest point lol.

Alas, I have respect for the computers that started it all.

  • The PowerMac 12 is to this day still one of the greatest computers I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Seven years later, it's still rockin and rollin. My MBA 11 is even better.

  • Man the 17" Powerbook started at $1000 more than today's 17" Macbook Pros.

  • @TommyBNSF And that was 2003 money! In todays money - its 3901 usd!

  • 4:40

    Francis, from Left 4 Dead.

  • whoa, just saw the price. THREE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED NINETY NINE!!!!!!!!! I can't even think of a laptop that costs that much today. even if you spec the shit out of a core i7 macbook pro i don't think it would be that much. wow. haha

  • dell laptops are beyond terrible, i agree with almost everyone here on that haha. I love watching these keynotes cuz it reminds me that the brand new macbook pro i just bought won't be obsolete for awhile : )

  • 3299$ holy shit!!! does it least come with collection of latest porn DVDs ??

  • @19cohen Back then there were no computers like it. Back then it was a deal of the century :)

  • Design is everything. Even though this product is not built anymore, just look at it. It is still better than the dell/hp Macbook Pro clone/ anything else you can get on the market. And that is was sells a product this good. Even though it is a bit pricey.

  • The 2nd rev. 12" PowerBook (1.33GHz) is one the best computers I've ever owned. Incredibly solid and super reliable. It's still in use as a netbook today (after several loyal years as a work machine)!

  • supercool :3

  • $3299.00?! You're a madman!!

  • $3299 --> wow!

LOL, a lot has changed... xD

  • amazing presentation skills.... one of a kind. no CEO comes close!

  • 4:40 sex predator look

  • lol

  • I love my 12" powerbook! It is fast enough for me and is the perfect size aound campus. I actually downgraded from macbook aluminum back to the 12" powerbook because the extra 1.3" made a difference to me and for the applications i was using, the macbook wasn't too much faster than my 12" powerbook.

I do miss wireless N and isight camera and the awesome touchpad, but oh well. If anyone wants to make a transition to mac and doesn't have a lot of money, buy a powerbook G4 they're awesome.

  • The 17" PowerBook wasn't worth it back then. In 2002 I bought a Acer Aspire 1700, it had 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4, 512 ram, 80 gb HDD and a 64 mb Graphics card from GeForce and it was 2000 dollars. Why would anybody buy the 17" PowerBook for 3299 dollars? Apple where always braging about their processers and how fast they where but I don't see why. :P And no I'm not a Windows Fanboy :P I have a 15" Macbook Pro (June '09)

  • Epic fail. Check your PMs.

  • Clock speed doesn't mean anything. Search megahertz myth on youtube. An 867mhz G4 beats 1.7ghz P4.

Plus of course yours didn't have a 17" screen, which would have cost several hundreds of dollars in 2003.

  • My did have a 17" screen :P that's why it's called Acer Aspire 1700 :P

  • You couldn't have bought it in 2002 then. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but if you go back to part 1 of this video Jobs states that it's the first 17" notebook in the world. And I'm sure they would be sued and lose the respect of their customers if they downright lied like that.

Are you sure you bought it in 2002, and are you sure it was a 17", not 16.4" or anything like that?

  • The Vaio X505 is 0.8" to 0.4". The Air is 0.76" to 0.16". That doesn't make the Air thinner however, because the Air is tapered off at the end to give the 0.16, whereas the Vaio is like a triangle if you look at it from the side. It would require some complicated maths to find out which is thinner.

The Pedion is 0.72". So at it's thickest point the Air is thicker. However, the pedion is .72 across the whole laptop, whereas the Air is .76 down to .16. So I'm quite sure the Air is thinner.

  • dude those are netbooks try editing video on that

  • @muk546 N00b, READ! "sisco 2003- Pow" THIS IS FROM 2003, NUB!

  • @muk546 Opps, sorry, i just noticed you are replying to niceveritt18

  • @PaladinBarre actually youre full of shit because i looked at both of those laptops before and they were old shit that is definatly thicker than the macbook air. Also if you look at the there was no thought put into themthey are as ugly as shit. Thats why apple remains a leader in the industry (even today) because when you pay what you pay for a mac youre getting a quality products. Just remember when you buy a computer; you get what you pay for..

  • Wait. He said "Worlds first 17" notebook". The wiki page says that a notebook is a computer designed for mobile use small enough to sit on ones lap. My computer doesn't fit that description :D Hehe this laptop was a monster. It weight 16 pounds and that doesn't make it mobile or convertible on your lap. So my was probably not a notebook :D it was a portable desktop computer with a screen :D

  • 16lb? That is massive.

Although I guess you can see why the PowerBook costs an extra $1300. Miniaturising all that in to something 10 pounds less costs a lot of money.

  • I'd like to see a laptop that weighed 16 pounds without something else attached to it.

  • Show us a video RIGHT NOW of it weighing 16 pounds.

  • "The reason for the huge casing is that Acer has fitted a 17in. monitor capable of displaying resolutions up to 1,280 by 1,024 pixels. Only Apple, so far, has built a notebook with a 17in. display -- the 1GHz PowerBook G4, but that's considerably lighter. So what's the attraction of the gargantuan Aspire 1700?"

The PowerBook 17" was the first with a 17" screen

  • Why do you want to downgrade?

  • 3200 dollars?? holy shitt

  • 4:40

  • So cool to see one of these Apple events from years ago and see what technology they were introducing!

  • I wish they kept innovating like this today. They still make good computers, but it's not cool like the first 17" laptop, a backlit keyboard, or a 1 inch computer. I guess everything has been invented now.

  • The MacBook AIR and their battery technologies are still ahead of their time ;)

  • 100 years ago people thought everything has been invented.

    Theres still lots to come.

  • That's very true.

  • Mac is the king of laptops with good battery life.

And I mean good laptops too, not shitty dell laptops or anything.

  • @5k4k1dhtp You definitely get what you pay for. Macs are a little more pricey, sure, but they're better built, they last longer, and they're better to look at. Dells are none of those things, but they're cheap. Just don't expect to be able to use one in three years :-)

  • @5k4k1dhtp: dell sucks.....LOL

  • @5k4k1dhtp you truly are a dumb ass there's nothing wrong with dell and apples shit apple is made for people who know nothing about computers.

  • @TheHorrorTastic no..its for people who can afford a nice computer.

  • @KevinTheAppleGuy Well I have a $1,500 computer and i run Linux, windows, and Hackintosh on and macs are just for retards.

  • @5k4k1dhtp I own a Dell Studio 15 from 2009. The hinges holding the screen to the base are cracked and loose. I really want a Macbook Pro, mainly for build quality alone. If there are cheaper alternatives that are fast, then I would purchase one of those.

  • 3299 ? Holy shit, but it's worth the money !

  • yeah well that was a long time ago. there not all that good. terrible graphics and slow processors! now there screaming fast. i love mac

  • Can't wait to get my 13 inch aluminum MacBook :DDD They really haven't changed alot have they lol

  • holy crap 3299 now a macbook pro is way more affordable

  • Hey... u do know that cash was worth more back then, rite? Look at it. Inflation... your buck is worth less. If u converted what that cash was worth back then to wat its worth now, it would be worth 5k+.

  • Uh actually in the '80s it would be worth 5K. $2500 back then is about $5000 now.

  • omgosh, i just bought a powerbook G4 from a friend of mine, for 500 dollars canadian, and i love it, it fits in pretty much all my bags, and ls the size of a peice of paper, before i had an acer (running xp, and it must have been 15 inches) and i am in love with how truly portable my mac is, its quite amazing... and watching this video got me very excited :)

  • If you think laptops were way expensive during this era. Check out old 1995 computer magazines - 4K to 5K USD average for both PC and Mac portables.

  • nice video

    LOL at 4:42

  • LOL shouldn't the pro products wifi range be better to start with?

  • The metal weakens the signal.

  • i get my first macbook in a month! :D

  • Well it's been a month, how's it going for you :)

I just replaced my non-unibody 17" MacBook Pro with a Unibody one, only thing that bothers me is the glossy screen but it's great.

  • I think the 12 inch PowerBook is the father of the new MacBook Alu

  • the 12 inch powerbook kinda reminds me of the new aluminum macbook, and the ibook being the white plastic macbook.

  • Jesus Christ - $3299. Apple make you pay when they give you everything.

Now their prices are a bit lower even at the high end, but they make more feature trade-offs. Still not so sure if a sealed-in battery, for instance, on the new MacBook, is worth the life you'd get from carrying a few removable ones.

  • God macbook airs arent that expensive and are way better

  • Best Keynote ever in my opinion.

  • maybe

  • @Sven88abc

    agreed!

  • I would not be surprised if the rumored Macbook/Netbook will look like the 12" Powerbook.

Somehow, it looks similar to the HP Mini note.

    Hmmm...

  • lol 4:40

  • Haha he obviously didn't quite understand what it was at first.

  • did you know the original tibooks at 400 and 500mhz were actually more expensive than the 17" powerbooks were in 2003?

  • 3299$ is alot its alot of money

  • lol i really liked the look that that airport extreme has it looks so nice! not that the new one isnt bad of course, I love how apple pioneers the industry, apple=genius

  • That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Have you never heard of Quicktime. Apple has the best video.

  • You do realize that it was made in 1998..you know, when 98% of laptops DIDN'T have DVD drives! if any! iBooks can still play video. And they didn't have vista back then. Why in hell would you make a video with windows movie maker? Oh, and you might want to take a look at what you're typing, it looks like an 8 year old typed what you typed.

  • fucking idiot... your so stupid dvd drives werent in laptops then it wasnt a standard then that it is now IMOVIE PAWNS WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER and learn how to type.

  • ROFL. Orange iBook was made in 1998, no one had fucking DVD players.

    Also learn English.

  • Windows Vista wasn't even out yet when this video was made!

  • Apple products is like Time Machine, the older are the better ones, this powerbook 12" is better than MBA.

  • Finally, we've moved past this (admittedly brilliant) notebook design. The past is nice, but the future is brighter as far as I'm concerned.

  • Powerbook 12" cost $1799+tax lol thats mouthy! not even mentioning 17" lol

  • $3499 or $3799 I don't remember but it's alot

  • It was the first 17" notebook ever. Yeah it was VERY expensive, but it was like the best notebook of its time.

  • Apple please put the technology of the Air in a 12 inches MacBook Pro it would be the best laptop for years to come.

  • wow love that price $3299 i rubbed my eyes to make sure i wasnt falling asleep or something

  • LOL

  • and i thought the macbook pro was expensive

  • same here, and I thought the Macbook Air was expensive, at least with this one you got your money's worth

  • MacBook Air is still WAAAAY overpriced. Wow! Only 3lbs, I think I'll bear the extra pound or 2 and not spend another $600-700 more on the Air and buy an aluminum MacBook. Why pay more for less. Only fools would pay the $1799 price tag of the air.

  • actually i agree, even that the air is goodlooking

  • This was the first 17" notebook in the world. It was also the fastest notebook in the world (give or take). And of course the thinnest notebook of that caliber.

  • I loved the PowerBook 12'', it was just stunning. I do like the new MacBook Pros and the new Air anyway.

  • if i had some money to spend right now, i would probably buy a 12" powerbook to go along with my MacBook

  • I wish a macbook pro 12'' was created

  • dido

  • Yeah but what would that be? A MacBook with a dedicated video card & aluminum casing? Not really worth it for apple. Besides that would throw the price points way off. Because seriously are you going to pay $1800 for a MacBook Air or 12" MacBook Pro?

  • I would. A 12'' 1280x1024 MacBook Pro for even 2500Euros would worth it for me + A dedicated GPU with lots of VRAM

  • that is almost the same as the MacBook Pro as far as the size and battery life

  • This stuff is still better than most of the stuff from competitors TODAY!

  • and thats why it cost $3200 lol

  • i still use the 12inch powerbook. I LOVE it. Macs are the best!

  • did the 12' inch powerbook have a illuminated keyboard with ambient light sensor?

  • Unfourtanetly, no. Only the SuperDrive model of the 15" PowerBook G4 and the 17" PowerBook G4. The 12" PowerBook is kinda like a lower end PowerBook...

  • we need a 12" macbook pro

  • yes and how much should this cost then? 5000$?

I am since a short time a Mac user too, and I cant see what is in it So especially.

  • less than the 15" ones. less than 2,000 for sure

  • not too much. It'd be like a regular MacBook with better insides. Less then $2,000

  • I like the aestetics of the 12" Powerbook better than the Macbook. Also the aluminium is more snazzy than cheep plastic.

  • So do I. I love the aesthetics of the MacBook Air, too. It's rumored that the MacBook is going to get the aluminum look next update.

  • they already made a smaller, less efficient macbook pro. The macbook air :D

  • The air is 13.3 the 12'' powerbook g4 is 12''

  • why is all the stuff of apple so Expensiv. okay the Technology is Future Empire but anyway its to Expensiv.

    >> I think Apple good but too expensive

  • I think your grammar is horrible.

  • agreed

  • Prove to me that their hardware is expensive, because I can prove to you that it's not.

  • I told you to prove it since you're the one making claims.

  • if you tried to equip another PC with the same specs as a mac, it would cost almost 50% more

  • Awesome!

  • Release the 12" MacBook Pro with all the features from the larger siblings and I'll be hooked. Typing from a PowerBook G4 15".

  • where were the speakers on the 12 inch power book?

  • There were 3 I believe. One on each side of the screen's hinge, the other was in the center exhaust grille. When the screen was opened, the sound reflected off the back of the screen.

  • Great trip to the history! I am looking forward to this year's Macworld keynote!

  • This kind of stuff is still fairly impressive now, amazing how it was 2003.

  •  is such a great computer company. They really care about their customers.

  • That's my laptop! I have the 12" Powerbook G4. I still love it to this day! It is such a beautiful and elegant design. It simply has a great look and feel. I've never stopped being excited about it. I'm hoping to afford a MacBook Pro this year. Wonder what they have in store for us this year?!

  • The year of the notebook. Sounds like some chinese prophecy, or something..

  • love my macbook

  • me too.

  • if i didnt get mine for free, i would never have one.

  • Who the hell wants QuickBooks, they should of took it out to make it 300$ cheaper.

  • omg!! 3299?????

  • wow nice. amazing how that was 5 years ago.

    I love my MBP.

  • I have always wanted to see the introduction of the 17-inch powerbook. Thanks for posting this!

  • I love your apple videos. Keep it up!

  • Nice!

  • i love my 15-incher!
