I believe this has to do with the long term goal of taking all of the eucalyptus trees out. they are a non native species. this has been being done elsewhere - for instance Golden Gate Park in SF.

I live in the area and don't know the background of what is happening with the clearcutting of the Oakland Hills. Can you provide some more background? It looks like they are taking the last bits of open space and denuding the hills. Are the residents opposing this atrocity? Why is the city doing this? It looks like they're so obsessed with fires that they don't care about erosion, landslides or environmental protection generally.
