I had a definite issue with the role playing situation. The bank manager may have addressed the situation at hand, but he didn't address the other mitigating factors: (1) Another customer's check was debited from his account, (2) An order to refund a CD wasn't implemented, (3) Statements did not arrive in a timely manner.
Perhaps we're supposed to side with the manager in this instance, but personally, I think the client got a raw deal. Poor case study example.
write down incidents if you think you are being harrassed, there are laws against bullying. this is for people who are being rude and whatever to you. keep records of inappropriate behaviour and if you can take it to hr.
does assertiveness apply when asking a girl out for a date or asking for her number? or you should be as subtle as possible and use informal and sarcasm language to avoid being direct and coming too strong.
@Gutsyndicate thats a very intresting question, If you are using scarcasm, this may seem confusing for the girl and she will be unsure of what you are wanting
It's interesting to notice how in the latin languages there isn't really a translation for the word assertiveness. Indeed, depending on the country where you live, different unspoken rules apply and what is considered passive or aggressive in a country might not be in another. In France, for example, or Italy customers have a very different (and more annoying) way of complaining.
@pierneus That is exactly what i have been researching and studying. The latin-root languages carry a spirit that create shame or/and guilt societies. This type of environment conditions people to be co-dependant (think French social system), needy, unambitious- basically intimidated enuchs castrated by their administrations. The background can be the religious heritage (clergy relations with the people). The Francophonie is an example of that, where the law, mentalitiy and lifestyle show this.
@claudrine I have to agree with you 100%. I'm originally from italy, but I've lived in France for years, and I know their system very well. it has been indeed very interesting for me to notice how those people react when conflict arises, especially when they're dealing with the public administration.
Does it call for assertiveness when a customer walks up to you and calls you stupid and that you dont understand english even after trying to help despite how shitty THEY speak english without getting fired?
@WickedKnight07 you could tell him you don't appreciate that behaviour and then it's up to you to decide if you are willing to take verbal abuse from a person like that and still hold him in regards as a customer.
The customer failed to argue that despite the banks errors regarding his account, the bank had never incurred fines from him. Unspoken policy states that if one side of a contract is fulfilled, the other side is expected to be as well. Why is ti that the bank can fine the customer for a minor error when the customer can't employ the same policy? We have forgotten that the success of a company is directly dependent on it's customers, not the other way around.
Hey professional boxers are usually quite assertive. Did you hear about the one who got stabbed for asking someone to stop smoking? No wonder people struggle to be assertive!
Wage war on the Motherfuckers who jerk you around at work. Rebel against them in your own way. Say no, no and no again and if they still can't hear you Fuck Off might work.
Disregard the message below or just use a pillow instead of harmful weapons because hurting people is not right Do Not do what someone wrote below I do not condone or recommend hurting people read below comment from scottyscotsman at your OWN RISK....
I hate this guy and all the other assertiveness idiots. All they ever deal with is very generic things. When do they ever deal with things that are causing people distress? Such as when people are pushing you around at work???
in a work situation there is a power imbalance,if you assert, you can get fired. How you deal with that is you cannot assert directly to a superior, you have to go through formal grievance channels, such as the organization omsbuds, or higher up authority. If you go to higher up authority, you have to do it right, or you'll just make yourself look bad.Read People Skills by Bolton. need to go to college so you aren't at the bottom of the hill all your life or start your own business.
First, I apologize for being so derogatory. My problem is basically as if I don't have any backbone. I've had co-workers who had no right to push me around. I just get very shaky when someone is pushing me around and I'm afraid I'll lose control and look and act inappropriate.
And I wish everyone great success in overcoming all of their lack of assertiveness issues and may you come to terms with all of your issues and live a long, happy and healthy life!
go get a crowbar come back to work when the so calle dbully is around and use and up and down motion on his skull with the bar ...bashing all your anger at that idiot
"...don't respond to the other person's anger." - silence in interpersonal communication. It's not about "giving in" or being weak. Like "fogging" - sometimes it's better to let people push against an open door.
Thanks, its a marvellous help for everyone to learn to be assertive in a smooth confident and tells how to stick for what we can do and just say NO for what we cant but in an easy persuassive way
I have realized that this is a problem that i have sometimes, causing me to be signed up and so busy, like superwoman..etc- i realized i cant do it all- say no sometimes, even a "sorry".I have learned that if youwere manipulated when a child, youmay do that or be a victim of it, even while not aware..thanks!
Well done

SAdly sometimes when I stand up for myself, the other party still neglects me.
I wish people would be more proactive
I wish people would pay more attention
I wish people would communicate more
I wish people would start listening
By failing to do the above, they can be very dangerous. Its not acceptable. I made myself a promise that from now on, I will not be walked on.
Its annoys me so much. People annoy me so much, I just want to just crash in bed. I've had eniuff!
