No, watts is *NOT* a marketing tool! It's the amount of power that your speaker is capable of handling, vs. how much power your amp puts out. If your amp overpower your speakers, you will blow them. If you try to drive speakers with an amp that's not designed to put out enough power to drive them, you will also blow the speakers.
Also, your "the lower the better comment" on impedance is also incorrect. If you follow that rule with speakers, you will overheat your amp.
