My father, "Tex" Owens flew the first commercial flight of the 1011 for Eastern. He was with them to the end. Got ripped off like the rest of the employee, by Frank Lorenzo.
I couldnt agree more deregulation ruined the airline industry. I remember flying Eastern back in 1972 on a DC 8 to Puerto Rico..what a great airlne, great service..so sad, twa, eastern, pan am, now continental, air tran..so few and now lousy service
I grew up in South Florida. I miss Eastern. They were Huge at one time. The had the entire eastern seaboard route locked up. What a shame to lose them. The govt never shoudl have deregulated the AL industry.
At the L-1011 take off, catch a glimps of the rare Eastern DC-10 at the hanger. Eastern had to use these for its London flight, as for some reson could not use the 1011
Amazing quality to that 1972 footage - George McGovern used EAL to fly to Miami to attend the 1972 Dem. Natl. Conv. to get the presidential nomination over Hubert Humphrey. He lost in a landslide to Richard Nixon.
ahh the Eastern Super Constellation...the first Eastern plane I was on...1958. It was a really nice aircraft. It was the first of more than 10 different Eastern planes, but the old props were WAY more comfortable...
My days spent with Eastern were some of the best days of my life. Working for them for almost 10 years, it was a pleasure to be a part of one of the best airlines going at the time. I miss the ole company and its many wonderful people. Dan Pendleton, Lexington, Ky
Use to get Eastern L-1011's on Orlando-Atlanta leg of trip to Raleigh in mid 70's to early 80's. They were a great plane. It is the biggest plane I have ever flow in and it was a pleasure to fly in one. Easter was a good airline, to bad it had to go out of business.
does anyone have a cmmercial from the late 70s showing an l-1011 flying over niagra falls with the music every minute every day an eastern jet is on the way
love these old ads. My dad flew for EAL 30ys primarily out of OHare. He was in one of the commercials - approx. early to mid 70's during the "you gotta believe' campaign
I don't understand why you blame President Bush for "letting it die." It dies because it became inefficient forcing its sale to Lorenzo. The machinist union in particular was very greedy and militant. At one point SIX UNIONS could touch the bags curb to plane. That is where the blame belongs.
Great video of a former great airline. Love the sound of the L1011 engines as it rotates for takeoff. BTW the tristar was called the "WhisperLiner" by Eastern and had it written on the sides of the center engine duct in the tail. The 727 had the title "WhisperJet" in its tail. Still a great video.
My father worked for EAL and I used to commute from MCI-ATL-MCI just about every weekend. I had to board DC-9's and 727's and I would always stare with wide-eyed amazement at those beautiful L1011's!
Thank you so much for this and the other memories of the Miami area. I grew up as a native in the 60's and 70's in Dade, then in Broward until the mid-1990's. I had many neighbors who worked for Eastern, and fondly remember taking a class field trip with one of them to MIA to get on one of the huge jets from EAL. I start to feel old when I remember their "Wings of Man" ride from Disney World at the time when you needed to buy "E" tickets for the best rides...
No...it's not wrong if it feels so right!....The L-1011 was a real beauty...Aesthetically one of the prettiest jets ever...Very safe and advanced for its time.
That's gotta be Orson Welles saying, "Eastern Airlines the Wings of Man.." sure sounded like him.

When I was a little boy, I rode on TWA Super Connies betwen San Fran and Chicago, I remembr all the fire coming from the exhausts.
Later on, I was on many, many Delta L-1011s between San Fran and Atlanta.
Great airplanes.
