@drkstrong I thought the X class was the worst. Do you think we would survive a direct hit by an X 2 ? I was under the impression that such a hit would take out the grid.
@BLynchCAN It is the largest in terms of X-ray emissions - not necessarily the worst in terms of shock waves and accelerated particles. The X flare produce a proton event that was 10 times smaller than the earlier M8 flare. Go figure! :)
The Earth has had direct hits by X30 flares perhaps much larger and we are all still here. The consequences to society might be bad for a few years if we got another 1859 flare - we would lose a lot of satellites (GPS, cell phones, TV, etc)
@drkstrong Smaller proton event, that's interesting. Yep, I was thinking about an 1859 redo with a post Fukushima senario. Nukes loose power and they start popping off all over along with nothing working. A bit dire but if it happens, not good.
Thank you for helping me have a better understanding of these events. There is enough right here on earth to be afraid of. If you have time , I have a question: Do you feel that this activity is the beginning of the predicted awakening of the Sun, and do you feel that the Sun is basically on track? Thanks
@MrScorpion18b The sun is rising towards solar maximum just a bit slower than was predicted a few years ago (we should have been at maxximum last year according to most predictions)
The Cosmos moves in Cycles. we, as insignificant, as we may seem are mere components in this vast Universe, however, much to our disliking; May not be able to stop forces we have no control over. It is time to study ourselves from within and realise that we are just beginning to awaken and reveal who and what we were meant to be. We have within us a latent power that can transform the face of the planet.
Dr Strong, did you see the asteroid that raced towards the sun before the X2 Flare and resulting Coronal Mass Ejection? On Lasco C3, it shows clearly the asteroid with a trajectory path and speed coinciding with the CME ejection. It may be pure coincidence, however we are seeing that result with intuitive predictability concerning recent comets. The CME seems to result on the opposite side of the sun from which the trajectory path would have continued.
@tkm679 I only found one paper on that . They compared several activity proxies of the 1859 event with those of recent flares. Surprisingly the events most equivalent (NO3 or magnetic disturbances or white light area) all were equaled by X10 to X15 flares.
@HalfFlask When some flares explode they accelerate particles to near relevativistic velocities. These are electrons and protons. Because of their mass protons pack more puch than the electorns do. Going so fast they arrive at the Earth tens of minutes after the light. They are only a danger to astronauts outside the magnetosphere.
Ominous music! Huge Dramatics....It's like being 100 feet from a lion...beautiful, majestic, but could rush at any time....heart palpitations...thanks Doc!
Great job...S2-Radiation storm at the moment...Hate to see this region turn the limb! Have to keep an eye on this one with the STEREO-A spacecraft, and see what comes of it...Peace!
This is AMAZING and powerful!!!! Give me my sunglasses!!! and my hat!!!! and my protective clothing!!!! And I want a pod for the enormous earthquake... to ride out the tsunami!!! Rock n roll BABY!!!
@c1umpdud Solar Maximum will be in 2013 according to the experts - they alll got the minimum wrong by 2 years. I wonder if they will get the maximum more accurately?

wow what a breathtaking video quality.
With science done in this way, you'd have us in shackles being so intrigued.
What is that epic music?
And lastly, why isn't this one of the most popular channels in the world?
10/10 for content/quality.

@1cyanideghost The Music is "Battle Lines" by Terry Devine-King
I am trying to make it "the most popular channels in the world" but it is slow. If you like it pass it on to your friends please.

how many X class did we had since 11 years and what power please ?
baboonsquadron 4 weeks ago
@baboonsquadron We had 121 X class flares during solar cycle 23 (12.6 years) - they included an X9, X10, X14, X17, X20 and X28.
The X28 saturated the detector and there have been many wild estimates as to how big it realy was. My guess would be between an X30 and X40.
