Exceptional and of the highest quality by any standards. Your gurus can be proud of your achievement. I saw in your website you also studied in Banaras. I hear echos of sarangi wizard Pandit Gopal Mishra's and other Banarsi style thumri in your Pilo. Kaabaat If someone hasnt heard Gopal Mishra he/she has missed out on one of the ultimates
Thoroughly delightful concert from start to finish with sensitive tabla accompaniment. You have captured the soul of Pilu and do full justice to Ust.Inayat Khan and Ust.Vilayat Khan's heritage. Keep it up.
Phenomenal and outstanding music that excels in all Angs. Very refined aesthetics and conscious development of raag. Javab nahi. How come you are unknown to the public?
Wow The real thing.By grace of your gurus you have got the true soul of ICM. Your sitar is constantly singing Piloo cheejz. For most westerners Dhrupad appears to be an easy thing because one can get away imagining sound effects and Naad yoga talk. But to really make raga sing be it Dhrupad Dadra Dhun you got to have the song in your heart(geet in sangeet means song) Rasa is in the song in both Hindusthani and Karnatic styles. Just SaRiGaMa is not raga. You are good in swara, tala and technique.
wow!! incredibly beautiful rasa and overwhelmingly tender emotion- really kaayaa baat he - must listen to part2/6 1:30 onwards and part3/6 4:15 onwards. Great concert from A to Z Thanks for posting
Really beautiful music I enjoyed listening and learning the best sitar lesson in concert playing I have seen. Great Piloo and sitar technique kyabaat hay
Very beautiful, the best foreign artist of Indian Classical Music (ICM) so far I've heard. Ms. Menon, you play with such authenticity, other people from west haven't been able to portray ICM as good as you. Raga Pilu being one of my personal favorites, it touched me. Anybody who enjoyed this should also watch her Bhairavi, it's quite amazing.
Very nice mood and concert! I hope the old theoreticians below still have ears to listen to music. Music doesnt have owners and lands. Being sound it travels and is free and open.
Yes Maharashtra region has been the great vocal region with Gwalior,Jaipur etc converging there. And for film music they had depend on Bengali instrumentalists and composers (the list is long). Tar instruments have existed for centuries to accompany singers. Sitar of today is 19th cent. After independence artists went to Delhi the capital where Master sitar maker Rikhi Ram improved on Bengali developments. Please do not take me to be a Bengali chauvanist. I am a chauvanist of good music.
Bengal was teeming with musical activity with knowledgeable connoisseurs and hundreds of dedicated students. The sitar we know today was perfected by the master craftsmen of Calcutta Kanailal & Hiren Roy. Heman Chandra Sen perfected the sarod for Ustads Ali Akbar Khan and Amjad Ali Khan. The great late Ust. Mushtaq Ali Khan's ideas influenced Kanailal's sitars. Calling Amir Khusu's name in vain as being the inventor of the sitar is meaningless
They absorbed the rich culture of Bengal, folk &classical, perfected intricate and beautiful compositions (Brigitte plays them very well in Bhairavi & Piloo) and took their instrumental techniques to new heights. Baba Allauddin Khan was from east Bengal and his genius is world famous. His son Ust Ali Akbar Khan and Pt RaviShankar are products of this monumental culture. Calcutta became capital of music thanks to learned Bengali patrons who gave these ustads the time-space to cultivate their art.
Please let me say a few words about sitar and its history. The contribution of Bengal, east and west, to Indian music in the late 19th and 20th century, especially instrumental is under estimated. The sitar and sarod would not be what it is without the participation of Ust Imdad & Inayat Khan and Baba Allauddin Khan. The former two grand masters, although originally from Etawah(near Gwalior) found the time and peaceful atmosphere in Bengal by Zamindar patrons and improved their immense talents.
I listened carefully to the whole concert and am amazed at your musicality and perfection of swara and tala. All 6 videos deserve equal attention. Your devotion to Ust Vilayat Khan and our shastriya sangeet is unique and of the highest level. I have already heard of you from my family via BimalakantaRoyChoudari of ImdadkhaniSchool Calcutta. My ancestors in Gauripur patronised great musicians and some of them distinguished themslelves as musicans and scholars.
a really fitting homage to a great giant of a master. I was sad when the alap suddenly stopped in the middle of the story. Would love to hear the rest.
