I love her accentuating the lyric "Stop!" This occurs will a lot of versions, and it's very entertaining. I also like that Merman hung out in the background for a while, and let the dancers get the limelight.
Only a month prior to this broadcast, Freddie Cannon had a massive hit with a rock 'n roll oriented remake of this old chestnut. This arrangement was obviously a response from the older generation, thinking to themselves, "Let's show these young hooligans how this tune is supposed to be performed!"
I don't care much for Ethel; I prefer Al Jolson or the Andrews Sisters...but the lyrics, the chorus, and the orchestra is TERRIFIC: Dixieland Jazz at it's BEST. THANKS!
What an upbeat performance. I miss the days when one could see entertainment like this by simply turning on the television or radio. Ethel Merman and her contemporaries were the best entertainers, in my opinion -- I don't want fans of modern entertainment to think I'm trolling.
At least there still are people like Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand performing regularly. So little from the golden era remain . . .

Another underestimated singer: Ethel was an entertainer to boot, and one of the most lively songbirds around.
If you like, feel free to check out my swingin' site -- hope to see you around and
Peace!

You are so right. I was at this show when I was around 17 or 18 years old. It was marvelous as well as all the other performances she gave.
