In defence of NixonMcvicar, i think we have a little inter-generational misunderstanding. "The shit" is "the best", making the definate article the opposite of the single word.
Search "urban dictionary" for further reading.
On a lighter note, going to see this dude at the Montrose Music Festival, it's the shit.
