@BillieBobSmith Fight Mikita? No -- he smacked him in the head, wasn't worthy of fighting -- there's plenty of footage of Orr fighting. What about Gretzky...you can't even find footage of him checking anyone, blocking a shot, or fighting without being the punching bag. Again, honest critiques of Orr are always welcomed, but at least get the history correct -- Orr had and won more fights than Gretzky, Mario and Gordie Howe COMBINED -- that's the historical record- he was his own enforcer.
@BillieBobSmith Orr WAS his own goon -- he had the most penalty minutes and fights of that team from '66-'76. He didn't need protection, he gave protection to his teammates, and they loved and respected him for it. Go look at the tape Orr vs Mikita -- he had a fierce temper -- and compare it with Gretzky vs Broten. If you want to argue via expansion, fine (Gretzky was the biggest beneficiary of this anyways) but to say Orr was protected by goons shows how uneducated you are on hockey's history.
@BillieBobSmith Orr protected by goons on the Big Bad Bruins? Learn your history -- Orr was the penalty minutes leader of that crew, sticking up for his teammates while also fighting his own battles. Orr was the Bruin's leader in penalty minutes from 1966-76, and he has more fights on his resume in 600 games than Howe, Gretzky, and Mario COMBINED did in over 4,000.
@RayNDeere Amazing, isn't it....? I think you meant to respond to BillieBobSmith -- don't bother, he chooses to dismiss and disregard these basic facts. Orr has 47 more fights in his career than Gretzky had checks in his...
@BillieBobSmith Team of goons? He played with Esposito and Sanderson! Orr revolutionised the game, no one had ever dreamt of a defenseman getting 100+ points in a season, but Bobby did. - Best Defenseman of all time, - Best skater of all time, - 2 Stanley Cups, - 8 consecutive Norris Trophies, - 3 Hart Memorial Trophies, - 2 Conn Smythe Trophies, - 2 Art Ross Trophies (as a defenseman!) Greatest of all time, and there will never be a better player. -
It bothers fans to see a hit like this happen to a great player who is also a terrific guy -- even more so because it happened to Bobby Orr, who is loved and cared about by pretty much everyone.
Like the Ulf Samuelsson hit on Cam Neely, it's not something fans are willing to just let go -- not something fans forget no matter how much time passes.
@robertk2007 tell me einstein how the fuck did quinn ruin the leafs. they've been rebuilding for 40 years lol. He brought them to the sem-finals and the playoffs for years... how've they done since then? peddie and co. who hired a fuckin baby for a GM, JFJ... THEY ruined the leafs... most recently lol.
..but Quinn as a player was a piece of shit. Orr is the best ever, see usaisadump below.
@robertk2007 I'd take Quinn over the present douchebag Wilson any day. They need Quinn back, Jon Turdgenson jr. screwed the leafs, he was awful, as is Wilson right now.
Orr was the best, there is still no doubt in my mind on that. The hit was a pretty decent hit but I think the elbow was slightly up on that. He hit him to put him out it seems.
Couldn't stand up? Name 1 player who beat Orr up. Over 45 fighting majors- fought every NHL tough guy while still finding time for 2 Cups 8 Norris, 3 Harts and a couple Art Ross& Connies with a Calder and Pearson thrown in for good measure. Hell, he even beat the piss out of Quinn when they next met. Poor fatassed Patty; throwing elbows and endangering lives just to keep his place on a team. Quinn and Cormier - twin cheapshotting Patties; both embarrassments to Canada and our great frozen game.
Clearly an elbow. Quinn could have hit him cleanly with a shoulder check in that scenario, but he chose the easy (and safer) way out by using his elbow. I don't believe that Pat was a total coward, but that was a cowardly move. The good news is... Orr beat the shit out of him during their next meeting. How embarrassing for big fatass Patty...but not as embarrassing as being in the NHL for 42 years without a Cup. Hahahaha. Pat Quinn... 9 NHL seasons as a player with 18 goals. Bravo!
stfu, Bravo? my ass. Quinn is one of the best coaches in the NHL you kow it and i know it. yes the hit was dirty but why do you got to attack Pat like that? huh? you gutless prik!!
42 NHL seasons with not a single mug. Forty fucking two! 131 points in 9 yrs with 2 goals/yr. Quinn is a fatassed joke. What's the purpose of a hockey player? What's the purpose of a coach? NHL gave this dickhead a chance to play. He failed. NHL gave this dickhead a chance to coach. He failed. They finally plopped a couple of all-star teams in his lap to win a couple International tourneys. Yay Patty! Somehow he managed to coach Gretzky, Lemieux and 10 other HOF'ers to victory. Tough job! Haha!
What do 42 years without a cup have to do with Quinn? He was only the coach for the leafs for seven years. He coached vancouver to the finals in 1994. Then he came to the leafs who previously missed the playoffs 2 seasons in a row before his arrival and then he coached them to the playoffs 6 out of the 7 years he was with the leafs and twice to the conference finals in 1999 and 2002. Listen man, i dont know who you think you are talking shit bout Quinn and calling him a fatass get some class.
one wonders how long the careers of Gretzky and Lemieux if they would have gotten nailed like Orr did. Orr wasn't in the "protect the superstars era".
Orr was the superstar AND the protector. Ask Mr. Sanderson, Mr Bucyk, Mr Stanfield. Orr was also the shot blocker, the goaltender, the winger, the centreman, the shooter, the scorer, the playmaker and the crushing body checker. There is absolutely no aspect of hockey that he did not master. Top defenseman, top scorer, tough as a bag full o' Mounties. And when he left the afternoon game after winning two fights and getting a hat trick, he'd go straight to the hospital to visit a sick child. Wow.
Mario Lemieux must have had some protectors. Pain in the butt instigator Claude Lemieux -- well, that's another story ... everyone wanted a shot at him.
@ramsback28 HHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Clearly live in your mother's basement... Who protected Lemieux, tough guy? Answer? You can't name anyone. How big was Mario? Answer? you don't know. He was 6'4" 220 lbs. Let's see you try and nail that. HAHAHA. Stupid fucking Canadian Quebec hater. Crosby is out with 2 concussions right now - who's protecting him, Massachusetts native??? Who? NO ONE. Stupid ignorant fool...
@StaalRulz2010 I live in my own basement clown, and the rest of the 750, 000 home that goes with it. DO yourself a favor, learn something about hockey before you pull out the ol' keyboard tough guy attitude. OK SON ? You don't know shit you fucking tool.

@ramsback28 you clearly don't know how big Lemieux is and gretzky was way too hockey smart to ever get hit bad. No disrespect to Orr though. He's still the greatest all around player to ever play the game
You said all around?? Not even close. Did you see Orr play??? Gretzky would have gotten killed when Orr played. Bobby Orr would have been a superstar today. He could play defense, score, rushed up ice like a forward and score one on one. On the penalty kill, once he had the puck, he could kill the whole two minutes if he wanted. Check out his old films.
The hit looks fine to me. If it wasn't the golden boy Orr, know one would care. Orr gave his share of cheap shots in his career, and the Bruins played that style of hockey. I have harder hits in today's game than the hit Orr received. I bet Stan Mikita loved this hit on Orr.
little louie, stop taking drugs, Bobby Orr was the best and toughest superstar of all time, what fking hockey games u watching today, the ladies league u play in little lou, u are obviously not a man
Not a doubt, Bobby Orr was the greatest hockey player ever. He could do it all.

@ramsback28 I most vehemently disagree! Orr was protected in his day. The refs used to let him violate
the rules by falling on the puck to stop play----clearly a rule violation which they would not call on Orr. If you
want to talk about a superstar that was NOT protected, then you'd have to think Robert Marvin Hull. Did the
league to anything to John Ferguson when he broke Hull's jaw?

@ramsback28 Lemieux wasn't really protected like Gretzky was. But I get your point.
