Bannister and Dann did what needed to be done years ago. There were two mistakes. Firstly, like Bannister says here, the changes should have been done gradually over a longer period. Secondly, Radio 2 should have done its repositioning at the same time, rather than 3-4 years after Radio 1 moved. Had that happened, commercial radio wouldn't have had the golden period it did between 1994 and 2002. A nessecary plan by the BBC, but tragically mis-timed.
@jamesmt142 Bannister and Dann DESTROYED Radio 1 in 1993 when it had proper DJs like DLT, Bates,Davies proper DJs nowadays Radio 1 is crap with Moyles,Cotton and Mills all crap and rubbish DJs bring back DLT!
@jamesmt142 indeed - though what you suggest would have been politically impossible for the BBC at the time, with the almost unbearable pressure it was under from a Tory government (funny how that has repeated itself).
At the factory I worked, we used to stop working to listen. All the machinery turned off etc. But we used to LAUGH at the stories of tragedy! How un-pc is that? Nothing like that today, and to think, I was only 16
@Nickthetoast Shut Up DLT is a legend and for me always will be he better than the crap we have now on Radio 1 I hate Moyles , Cotton and Mills with a passion DLT is better than todays crap i still listen to him every weekend on Magic and he sets my weekends up nicely so Nickthetoast your BANG out of order!!!!
@stuttsy83 Only coming into this debate 10 months after your post, I think that the main point is that we have the freedom of choice - you can listen to DLT on Magic (rather than you than me), and Nickthetoast can listen to Radio 1 if he wishes (again, rather than him if he wishes). Personally, I enjoy Smashy & Nicey.
It had massive audiences before Bannister and Dann killed it;OK 1053/1089kHz wasn't great at night in some areas of the United Kingdom but it acted as a fill-in where R1FM97-99 was difficult or impossible to receive and Astra satellite coverage got millions of listeners across the european continent and in the UK in high quality PANDA1 stereo via UK Gold on Astra 1B ch 23 then it moved to UK Living on Astra1C ch 35 which had a much bigger european coverage reaching more UK expats abroad.
bannister ruined radio 1,.......DLT,tony blackburn, jimmy saville, bates, edmunds,'diddy',read were and still are,get these guys on a radio station once again and you will get at least 10 million listeners...why?? because they are legends
BBCR1 was damned MASSIVE before those idiots Dann and Bannister ruined it in 1993,with European coverage on satellite,a fantastic FM network of better quality stereo and massive audiences that loved it, things were better before these idiots came along and killed it.
Radio 1 needed to change, it was given airtime on the basis that it catered for teenagers/twentysomethings and the audience had grown older with it, what should have happened is Radio 2 as it is now should have been the progression for DLT,Simon Bates etc, unfortunately the Radio 2 controller at the time seemed to think it should be a station for pensioners. Mind you Atlantic 252,Virgin and local independents were direct replacements if you wanted thet 70-80's era radio 1 DJ style
August 26th 1993 will be a day will never forget Dave Lee Travis Resigning Live on BBC Radio 1 Johnny Beeerling resigned as controller of Radio 1 Matthew Bannister was named controller and they lost 15 million listeners from 24 millon down to 9 millon listners then it be came a youth station when bannister left 1998

DLT- what a twat...
The truth was, he (via his agent) tried to wheedle his way onto Radio 2 and they rejected him. Only then did his 'righteous anger' flare up on air.
God, he ruined so many childhood Sunday mornings for me during the 80s...

The fact that you yourself lost interest in pop does not mean the station died.

Radio 1 did *not* have as many as 24 million listeners in 1993!

It had a lot more than it has now! Bannister killed it.
