  • Sagan, Hawking, and Clarke are the real Holy Trinity.

  • This is an absolutely wonderful conversation.

  • @Cownze TOTALLY AGREE. watching it high atm =) mindblown.jpg

  • I believe in something of a 'do nothing' god.

  • @trinikagekavir Then you would be Deist :]

  • wow "The hubble space telescope....might be launched next year if we're lucky"

    Wow...

  • if u watch this high.. you mind will be fuckin blown

  • @Cownze ..........

  • @Cownze I'm sure Mr.Sagan and Mr.Hawking would be proud...

  • @Sagr1987 Weed isnt even that bad 4 you. Sagan would be proud 4 sure

  • @Cownze I agree it isn't bad. I'm just referring to them having an intellectual conversation. I think we should try to learn things instead of using it to feel good. I'm not judging really just my thoughts.

  • @Sagr1987 There is nothing I love more than learning and science. But weed is funny, its used to make something interesting, more interesting

  • @Cownze Amen Broda

  • wouldn't it be theoretically possible to use some special field or material to convert the energy of the black hole to power some form of shield, as the amount of force reaches infinity, so too would your power generation capabilities?

  • @Polydynamix NO.

  • @RAINBOWTOA you're telling me that being able to plug the variable "infinity" into a couple of key equations wouldn't open up a few doors?

  • @Polydynamix Maybe

  • OMG I just accidently pressed the dislike button, now I´m going to hell!

  • There you have it--at 43:47--for those who claim Hawking (or Einstein) are theists. They use the word "God" as a metaphor--neither of them believe in a personal god, and publicly said so. As Hawking says at this spot in the universe, "God" is a word he uses for "the reason why the universe is as it and why the universe exists at all." If they truly believed that "God" was the actual answer to these questions, there would be no need to seek the real answers through science.

  • @DandAinTac Hawking certainly uses God as a metaphor(though he is agnostic not atheist)

It's a little different with Einstein though. He genuinely believed that the theory of everything was a way to 'figure out the mind of god'.

  • @trinikagekavir "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." (Albert Einstein, 1954) Clearly, Einstein was not a theist. He said so in his own words. What do you call a person who is "not a theist"? An atheist. Hawking in my next post.

  • @DandAinTac Einstein once said he was not clever, merely curious. He asked questions and when the solutions came easy he said and i quote 'God is answering.'

On some some level he was NOT an atheist, not a theist certainly but who knows...a deist etc.

  • @trinikagekavir As far as Hawking, he said the following: "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark." He has made other statements that lead me to believe he does not believe. This is all atheism is--right now, based on what you know, do you believe in god? BTW, a lot of people think they're agnostic, but they are often atheists also. But the word carries a lot of social stigma, so they think they are just agnostic.

  • @DandAinTac Certainly but believing that there is no after life does not equate not believing in God. I am aware that Hawking certainly does not believe in a God the way any religion describes it but I haven't see anything where he is 100% against the idea of a 'do nothing' God'

As for me, my belief in God dwindles by the day so I call myself agnostic yes. However, on some level I see myself as a Hindu who believes only in the Vedas.

  • the amazing thing is every1 knows steven hawking..but if u ask why..no1 really knows why

  • @noobadoc ...because his work(and the work of other scientists) has allowed us an amazing glimpse into the workings of the cosmos.

  • @personEks so u dont know either then

  • @noobadoc Your getting drool all over yourself, wipe your face off.

  • Oh, I see why it's there now. Ooops. :)

  • Couldn't help noticing the Mandelbrot set on the monitor behind Magnus. :)

  • It took Carl until 17:00 to say 'Billion' in some form other than 'to the 10th power.'

  • I love Arthur C. Clarke's Voice :D so amazing!

  • At the time, these were probably the 4 best people on the planet to investigate cosmology for the layman. They cover all the aspects of investigation.

Magnus Magnusson (best known for his renaissance-man like intelligence and questioning nature). Stephen Hawking (theoretical physicist), Carl Sagan (astronomer with a huge amount of practical experience) and Arthur C Clarke (known for his amazing imagination and scientific knowledge).

Sad the the only one alive now is Stephen Hawking.

  • Levon your dumb, they are moving away due to the expanding universe and gravity, they are decaying it's called entropy. Maybe if go to collage I could show you the math

  • @Nightwalker9001

    you're*

  • @Nightwalker9001 You see the one you calling dumb he knows what this universe made of & what is gravity how it formed. You cannot possibly impress me with your math knowledge I know that to. Perhaps I don't use proper English that is different thing. English is not my first language. Perhaps you're showing who is the true dumb from two of us take your wild guess

  • also both can explain science in the most simplist of ways with out ummms or eeeerrrs or ahhhh

  • the new carl sagan is michio kaku. both were born in newyork, both are the leader of their fields and andvances humanity, and speak the truth. both are intellegent enough to look thrpught the blindness of religion.

  • @Nazim1495

Neil Degrasse Tyson is also pretty close =D

  • First of all galaxies moving away from each other not because universe is expanding? Guys you got it all wrong. To begin with universe has no limits it is endless. Galaxies they are in the motion for one reason they are accumulating more energy. Energy cannot be stored, energy cannot be stopped. If the space stop producing energy galaxies will have the opposite effect start to decay.

  • these three, where are their successors....nowadays this would havetwo comedians...one would probably be dara obrian.

  • Stephen Hawking should do stand-up. He's so funny! Love him.

  • @martinbondesson

There's a joke in there about him being paralyzed, but I respect him too much to make it.

  • @SuckMikeHunt Oh, man... how could I not see that? Haha! I feel like an ass :)

  • Lends a whole new meaning to the term 'plancking'.

  • I can't believe I have never seen this before. Great stuff! If this was the year that A Brief History of Time was first published, it must be 1988.

  • I liked how Carl Sagan who usually keeps it professional, couldn't hold back the laugh.:)

  • Hahahah I love the joke made by Hawking at 7:08 to 7:25. Nerd Humor is awesome.

  • when I clicked on this video clip I immediately jumped to minute 13. I thought it would be boring as hell especially seeing Hawking. I clicked on it because I had heard that Carl Sagan was a master of science. Boy was I wrong this is really interesting

  • Was Carl Sagan considered a genius?

  • @aYellowDart Carl Sagan was a great communicator of science. Many people who excel in their scientific fields, lack the presentation skills to communicate just how fascinating science is to the layman. Sagan had an amazing ability to fascinate the public with some of the most complex and advanced questions ever asked about our universe. If you ever wanted to see more of him, look for his series "Cosmos".

  • @hypersapien Right. I understand that 100%. I was just wondering if he was a mathematical or scientific genius. My guess is no, then?

  • @aYellowDart Wikipedia, "There is no scientifically precise definition of genius, and indeed the question of whether the notion itself has any real meaning is a subject of current debate. "

So it seems to me that it is in the eye of the beholder. A lot of people really admired him, as I said before, for being able to bridge the gap between scientific intellectuals and the common person, and in that respect I'd say he's a kind of genius. He shared knowledge with the world in a very unique way.

  • That story about Laplace is my favorite!

  • Who would have thought when this aired that the only one still alive in 2012 would be Hawking?

  • Comment removed

  • Stephen Hawking is God.

  • The badass meter in that studio on that day must have hit a record high.

  • @4ut0m4g1c oh shit!!

  • Hawking fairly recently admitted that information is NOT lost or eliminated inside a black hole; additionally, I have heard a couple of relatively well-respected physicists state that if the black hole is big enough, there is a possibility that a human could survive the journey inside. Of course, we still wouldn't know what would happen once he or she is in there. I'm finding the colloquium pretty dated. Or perhaps I just spend too much time watching the Science Channel...

  • Does anyone care that the only guy still alive from this is the one who was diagnosed with ALS and told he'd die before he reached 23 (or something)? I have no life.

  • @UniversalRee Is There a Viral Postulation?

  • It is immediately obvious to me, does that mean I'm a genius?

  • What year is this?

  • @ about 7:45, i think that Mr. Hawking may have dropped a bomb on Keynes. if he did, no one caught it. bummer, it was exellent

  • I'm not sure its possible for our leaders to have a moral structure? can the psychopath achieve this?

  • man, did carl say that we are broadcasting television out into the universe? that would be enough for me to turn and run If I were a little green man. surely television is the last thing we should have sent out!

  • @ehpl When a TV or radio signal is transmitted, it is sent out in all directions, including straight up. If you haven't seen the film Contact, based on Carl Sagan's book, please do see it. You will see in the film that the first TV transmission of any strength (and therefore the first that would be received by aliens) was of Hitler opening the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

  • I really enjoyed that, despite it being from around 1989 it hasn't dated at all.

  • God wasn't there to defend Himself.

    ;)

  • @Kenmorfdublin I would argue that God had three incredibly apt representatives...

  • "You're books turned me on when I was small boy" - Arthur C. Clarke ...WTF???

  • Did you ever hear about the dyslexic insomniac who used to lie awake at night wondering if there was a Dog?

  • Trivia question - which of these is the weakest of the five forces? -

    1; The strong nuclear force

    2; The weak nuclear force

    3; Gravitation

    4; Electromagetism

    5; Magnus Magnusson

  • @Kenmorfdublin If your talking about the Strongman Magnus Magnusson then he can't be the "weakest link." lol

  • @Kenmorfdublin Gravity.

  • Is it just me, or does Wagner's Overture from Tannhauser (that starts this video off) kick ass?

  • @solarflux It kicks ass! big time! - and thanks for identifying it for me as I was wracking my brains about it till I happened upon your comment.

  • @TheKturner05 thanks. So the British billion is like the American trillion...? How did that come to be?

  • Oh if everyone were a little more like these three men

  • Can't believe this happened BEFORE the Hubble... We rely on it for almost all of our cosmic photos. To believe it's coming to an end already... Hopefully the James Webb Space Telescope gets up and running ASAP!

  • wow this is gold cant believe I hadnt found this yet . Cant wait to watch it , I dont want it to stop after 50 minutes !!!

  • When was this?

  • @RasmusLastname

    I think, 1989

  • why is Carl saying thousands of millions instead of "Billions and Billions"??

  • @TheKturner05 Well, what is the difference as long as it is correct:)?

  • @AiridasLietuva lol no difference its just carl sagan and the world billions are synonamous

  • @TheKturner05 you say tomato i say tomata

  • @TheKturner05 One billion is interpreted differently in Britain and the US; the British billion is a million million (10^12), whereas the US billion means a thousand million (10^9). So saying the earth is five thousand million years old is the US equivalent of five billion years. Carl was conforming to a mainly British TV audience.

  • Man! Hubble Space Telescope DID answer the question for the big crunch and the future of the Universe.

  • What a find! This is a dream line up. FYI the guy hosting was a well respected broadcaster here in the UK, Magnus Magnusen. It's great to see Clarke, my favourite SF author and Sagan, who spanned both science and science fiction ("Contact" is a gem) and Hawking.

  • Three of the most beautiful and profound minds gathered here, elegant in their answers and still questioning their own theories and findings until proven otherwise. - What a golden line up.

  • It would be a great cosmic comedy if we are the beginning of any intelligent life in the universe. Sitting here wondering why we haven't been visited when we will in fact be the ones to do the first visiting.

  • 3 capos!

  • Wagner in the beginning was a nice touch.

  • reality TV from the 80's

  • Does anyone know what year this was filmed?

  • science solves the unknown with proof.not all of the unknown may be found with answers at the current time.we must continue to experiment to find answers.faith gives answers that are unknown with no proof and assumes we dont need to continue to look.it is a coping and survival mechanism.we really all dont like the fact we die but we find a way to help us cope. we have to respect others views as we share the earth.we cannot move forward without science.we cannot move forward without compassion.

  • You know its a quality programme when Magnus does the narration

  • Never noticed before how much Magnus Magnusson looks like George Dubya

  • I hate to take away from what is actually being discussed, but I still don't understand how Steven Hawking's voice synthesizer works. Were all of his speeches pre-prepared?

  • @Roflcopter4b His computer has a selection of options, ranging from individual letters, to words, to set phrases, and he can select them accordingly at a surprisingly quick rate.

I worked in a disabled home where a woman could only use a clicker button between her cheek and shoulder to formulate sentences this way with clicks and double clicks.

  • @weefeatures But how are they selected with just a single button?

  • @Roflcopter4b It starts off with say 4 or 5 choices, like verbs, nouns, adverbs etc with a cursor hovering over one. Every 2 seconds it moves over to the next choice and she clicks when it hovers over and then might bring up a selection of particular nouns like 'places' 'people' 'things' etc. so it can take some time. She has set phrases as well. I imagine Hawking's is more advanced as he uses two buttons here, but nowadays he has a clicker in his glasses that he clicks with his cheek.

  • @weefeatures Interesting. This sounds like it could take an awfully long time to say anything complex. Does Mr. Hawking prepare his speeches beforehand for just this reason?

  • @Roflcopter4b I think his is more advanced, with the second clicker selecting rather than clicking, and it may work like predictive text but with phrases and words. So it may offer suggestions for the following words. For his speeches I'm sure a lot of it is prepared, but he seems to answer questions quite quickly and specifically too. Must be quite frustrating for him though.

  • @weefeatures that reminds me of the mac mouse.

  • 36:44 That's what we've been doing to Earth for a long time and no one seems to care..

  • i love carl sagan

  • - How old is this program?

    - Does anyone know what the opening music is?

  • @MissInformati0n 1988 I believe.

  • @MissInformati0n It has to be quite old. Sagan died in '96. The music is Wagner. Tannhauser Overture.

"I've seen attack ships on fire..."

  • Modern science will eventually be obsolete and the most basic materialistic sensory sciences are counting weighing measuring will be the first to evolve. Competing interpretations of the same phenomena will always grow and radically change. Eventually science will be lead primarily by behavioral observations/pattern recognitions inferrential reasoning etc. The simple science days are gone. The victorian age 'cold hard fact' science derived from naturalism/atheism is beyond reach.

  • Grown up with these guys, always love watching/reading their stuff. I disagree with their world views and narrow sensory matrielistic western science. Since the 18th century the 'higher critics' and naturalists have hijacked science.

  • @lonelytraveller That's what's known as an argument from ignorance.

The bible has no answers, only useless ad hoc non-answers that don't empirically tell us anything at all.

  • @lonelytraveller Science has the only answers backed by anything of substance. It's easy to understand because it's a useless ad hoc rationalization. We could say 'magic did it' instead of doing physics but that tells us nothing.

  • @TheScienceFoundation Yet many things happen and science has no idea how they do. Instead of "magic did it", I say God did it. What amazes me is that many scientists are so proud that don't even try to investigate about God. Surprisingly, people do believe in U.F.O., which are not really backed by anything of substance, yet they don't believe in the Bible, where there are about 2000 fulfilled prophecies. May God open your eyes and your ears!

  • @lonelytraveller There is no difference between 'magic did it' and 'god did it'

Extraterrestrials would be organic life forms based in this realm of existence, not by definition unobservable.

    'about 2000 fulfilled prophecies

    Such as?

  • @lonelytraveller

So essentially you're nothing more than the modern embodiment of the followers of Zeus. Following a myth because your imagination exceeds the reality of the natural world around you. Unnecessarily I might add, after all the nature of lightning and thunder don't change just because you believe otherwise.

  • @lonelytraveller Science is a progression. The Bible is a shut book, bound to collect dust for all eternity until it is finally discarded. Science may not have all the answers now, but that's no reason to stamp 'God' onto every problem presented before us that we don't initially have the intuition for explaining. Science is all about accepting new ideas of the universe's functions. If you've studied even just Hawking's work, you'll see that the existence of God isn't necessary.

  • @lonelytraveller In the Aztec times they didn't know why it rained so they said it was 'God's tears'.

In Nordic times they didn't understand Thunder so said 'It's Thor's hammer'

Not having the answer doesn't mean you should create it; it means you should search for it.

  • @lonelytraveller

Sorry to jump in here but I wanted to pointed out that the fact that you are even capable of viewing this and able to have a conversation is because theories have been formulated and turned into useful technology. Of course I am missing a lot detail here but I urge you to not be satisfied with ignorance and if you were only be a little more informed as to how the world works you may not be so critical of others who are.

  • @lonelytraveller You are advocating bronze-age superstition and discouraging rational thought. Your delusional circular logic, fantasy, and fanaticism are not relevant. If you spent more time exploring the world you live in and studying it's history (not to mention the immense body of knowledge and information compiled by the human race over that last four thousand years) maybe YOUR eyes and ears would open to the reality you exist in. No offense.

  • Outstanidng! What was the date of this interview?

  • Thanks for sharing. I had been looking for the full show.

    Good vibes.

  • And my degree... Political science. What a complete waste of time. These guys are just blowing my brain to pieces, I could sit and read/listen to Carl Sagan all day.

  • my head hurts with all my questions xD

  • @dardobartoli

    idiot

  • A special worth watching, from quite a few years ago, but worth the time!

  • Magnus Magusson, a great name for a moderator of the discussion of GOD, The UNIVERSE and EVERYTHING ELSE - wow, what a title! :- )

  • Epic introduction

  • The Big Three!!

  • It sucks hawking got struck with that rare disease, he coulda been 100x better than einstein, perhaps inventing some epic stuff.

  • @Trucido614 i don't want to make him look stupid, since i have great respect of him, but doctors agreed that this disease actually raised his I.Q. around 20 points, before that he was just an "average" scientist, if scientists can be called average

  • According to Dr. Hawking, the time before the big-bang has no impact on the things that happened after the big-bang therefore it is not relevant. Time bagan with Big-bang. Well, this thinking also applies to anything that has the beginning and and end as it relates to time. If something begins, time that began with that "something" has impact to that "something" hence relevant.

I believe time always existed....whether that is relevant or not is only a matter of who wants to know and why

  • 19:50 Arthur C. Clarke should be a guest musician on Tim & Eric's "Minivan Highway."

  • OK, The host says it was merely 20 years ago since human put step on the moon, so it must be 1988 or 89. Correct me if i'm wrong.

  • @robin100012001 He said nearly, so I guessed 1988 and it's right there in the credits at the end.

  • Please Mr Uploader, it was very nice of you if you have mentioned the year this was filmed, I heard Clarke saying if Hubble launches in probably next year, it will answer some of this questions, so this must be in the beginning of 90s.

  • @robin100012001 No, because Sagan talked about the US cooperating with the Soviet Union, which ended in 1989. The credits reveal the date to be 1988.

  • @TheScienceFoundation Sarcasm?

  • @dardobartoli I was hoping you'd catch that, I laid it on pretty thick.

  • @TheScienceFoundation he is clearly trolling m8, check his channel :P

  • @dardobartoli You ignorant fool, i seriously hope you're trolling. There are many prominent atheist authors and scientists out there, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, Dennet, even Bill Maher for goodness sake. Just because these brilliant men in the video are dead doesn't mean atheism is dying, it has grown substantially in North America during the past 30 years. You made my computer moron of the month list.

  • @dardobartoli Blimey, I never thought anyone would take my comment seriously..... it must be very poor sarcasm when I have to tell you all that it was just that!

  • @dardobartoli fuck off

  • @dardobartoli i like your psycho god

  • @dardobartoli that has to be the dumbest statement ever uttered not just from a person of faith, but from a human being in general......congrats you are officially at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to intelligence .

  • Comment removed

  • @dardobartoli The last pope died, didn`t he? With your argument, the saint pope has little of this holy holiness

  • @dardobartoli

Is that supposed to be funny? People die every day, it sucks but that has nothing to do with the existence of a God.

I read about a priest who died.....there must not be a god

  • @dardobartoli Hawking*
