I think the "n word" is a great example of what I am talking about. You can say it as a term of endearment, a salutation or in a malicious context. It all depends on how you say it.

Yet to that, I would say that it's never appropriate. At that point, I would question whether or not the person really is offended by the word. If they can say it to each other and it's fine, I don't think they should have a problem with others saying it.

However, in my case, as with many other gay people, we don't call each other that word, because it is not okay... and that would just be us giving them permission to use it too.
