Matthews was clearly trying to define the debate as an issue of the Church trying to impose it's moral teaching in law. The Bishop seemed to be getting sucked into it. This is not a legal issue it is a moral issue as to what defines a properly formed conscience IAW Church teaching and being in a state of grace to receive the sacrament.

If Kennedy wants to take the position he has he is completely free to do so, he just cant claim to be a faithful Catholic at the same time.

Really? Where do you get your numbers from? If I put on a show filled with truth and no one watches it, is it all a lie? Either way, if you appeal to a higher law, then we should be working to prevent abortions, it's easily shown that outlawing abortions doesn't do that. Sex education and advocacy of pregnant women does. This was Matthews point.
