I absolutely love this song. I'll be honest, I'm a flat-out metalhead, but I've been getting into more psychedelic, alternative, electronic, and (in Funkadelic's case) funk stuff lately, and I love it.
It is often said that George Clinton told Eddie to play "like his mother had just died". I have never believed this story. Eddie was about 20 when this was recorded and Jimi Hendrix had just died. That Jimi was Eddie's inspiration is easy to hear in his solos. The loss of Jimi Hendrix was devestating for him, as it was for many of us back then. This song epitomizes Eddie. It's like knowing him all over again.
@funkedbyinjection - Curiously, did you know Eddie Hazel? It sounds like there's a lot of Hendrix in this, but I wouldn't be able to judge what inspired him to play this. It's a shame that there's so little information about Hazel, because nobody, not even Hendrix, ever made their guitar cry like he does in "Maggot Brain".
@fatsramsey94 yes. Eddie & I met when we were 18 (1968) & saw each other off & on for 15 yrs. It was a real rollercoaster ride. I never got the impression that he wanted the spotlight, maybe that's why so little is known about him. When Hendrix died, he was deemed "the Heir to Jimi Hendrix". There are many solos on YTube--most of them as emotional as this. Look up Eddie Hazel 1979. The song is Standing on the Verge, and you can see how amazing he truly was. Also M-Brain Live 1983.
@shelspa69 While this stuff is definitely heady, I do not think Maggot Brain (or P-Funk) is historically referred to as being the "birth of acid rock." If there was one band to get that credit, I think it might be the Grateful Dead when they played Ken Kesey's acid tests of the 60's, though there is room for debate.
This 1971 rock/funk song is legendary, with arguably one of the best guitar solos in music history, by a relatively unknown guitarist, Eddie Hazel. Jimi Hendrix was already gone by the time this song was completed, and I'm almost positive that Hendrix was a major influence for Hazel, I'll bet Jimi Hendrix would've liked this too, R.I.P. Eddie Hazel, gone, but not forgotten.
George Clinton told him to play the first half of the song like he just found out his mother was dead... and the second half like he just found out she was still alive....
Cool, I appreciate you posting this. Your's is the only version on youtube that I found which was not an edited version. The other couple versions omitted the "Mother Earth is pregnant....." dialogue and went right into the music. Thanks for your posting . It also has the best quality sound on it as well.
I am only 29 but I know about parliament, parlet, funkadelic, and all that. I've been listening to it since I was born. This is by far some of the most deep shit I ever heard
Listen to this high is so goooood
