  • i'm glad cause i'm lucky enough to like both genesis

  • Too sad it's not the entire song :(

  • hope to see them perform again

  • Saying that Genesis are amazingly fabulous is not enough, according to me. Whenever I listen to them I am in religious silence.

  • Great song! The doosh costume kinda takes away from the music/performance though??

  • where is the rest of the damn song????

  • these guys were super talented. I don't care about the math or politics. we have it on tape. kudos to the uploader.

  • they all looked cool in their youth, love this song

  • Love Peter Gabriel... Genius.. Creative... this music is even better when you can watch the videos and see the costumes, creativity, coming forward.. amazing times, experiences.. music. True Artists-all of them!

  • Danke! Danke!

    man Super!

  • Jesus. Somebody kick that clown off the stage and put the drummer on. It happened the way it was meant to happen. I like Sledgehammer and I like Genesis, but I don't like this.

  • @FightForUtopia Sorry but you are totally stupid, you know nothing of music , no theater, no opera and no musicals . I grown up with genesis and Peter Gabriel and I'm Musician, Yes , Phil collins is very good but ...........the real Talent is Peter Gabriel !!!!!

  • @miraculeux2006 Huh, what, did you say something? I'm stupid, I can't understand what you're saying.

  • @FightForUtopia STUPID !!!! kick yourself off !!!

  • @miraculeux2006 I'm not on it, dummy. And if i was, I wouldn't be dressed as a clown.

  • I envy the audience that are there...seeing the old Genesis LIVE. Oh,why was I cursed to be born in 1997?

  • Genesis started as a pop group and made many pop songs long before Phil took the the mic. Stop acting like pop is so taboo. Pop music can be amazing, moving, and well done, as Genesis proved with later albums. Also, Tony, Mike, and Phil were all equally responsible for the direction the band took. Gabriel left so he could have the freedom to do whatever he wanted, same as Hackett, not because of some imaginary commitment to prog rock. That being said, this was one of their finest moments :)

  • @KainHighwind19 Musicians of their caliber, of course are gonna create good Pop Songs. (even though I think XTC and Tears For Fears made smarter ones) Even Bieber can do it.

And that's exactly what are we talking about here: WASTED TALENT. Let's face it, Pop is not a musically challenging genre.

And you are right Pop is not taboo. But for a group of Progers deserting the battle of quality in music, to go full blown Pop, yes it is. They're the only ones who did it permanently.

  • @KainHighwind19 Well said!

  • Gabriel himself admitted that Genesis was going stale. Id rather that Collins took it in a new direction than them fade away .

I dont see it as graffiti on art, or pissing on a grave. Post Gabriel Genesis wasnt perfect, but its still better music than there is around today.

  • A historical document for Genesis at his best !!!

    Thanks for sharing !

  • Jagger or Richards? I'd say Jagger

    Lennon or McCartney? Say Lennon

Barrett, Gilmour or Waters? I like Gilmour

Gabriel or Collins? Sorry, don't ask me to choose one or the pther, I can't make up my mind...

  • @jacopo1161 That is what is good about music:

I would say exactly the opposite.

Gabriel and Phil C: A draw:-)

  • Brilliant!. And now who have we got??? Justin fing Bieber!!!. The epitome of the devolution of music.

  • @offwiththefairies77 Mainstream is shit now. But there are talented acts still around. You just need to look harder in order to discover 'em.

  • Gabriel proves yet again that HE WAS Genesis...I digress

  • sellin england by the pound

  • ehm the woman of your dreams

  • is very very very good genesis my lover

  • is very very very good

  • barking mad , amazing human being .

  • Collins sold Genesis by the pound.

  • @vivelavidarocka That fuck..!

  • @vivelavidarocka Well said. Full agreement. Thank God it wasn't by the Euro!

  • @martock36 lol

  • @vivelavidarocka he even called one of his lame-o pop songs "Paperlate"

  • @vivelavidarocka Absolute nonsense, Phil had no choice, Peter wanted to quit!!

Phil made Genesis a commercial success, no question about that, but I (and many others) like Genesis better with Peter G. Not Phil's fault though!! Come on!

  • @joergen100 Phil had no choice but going Pop? A blasphemous musical strategy with great economic results.

  • @vivelavidarocka No Phil had no choice but take over as a singer from Gabriel, as he had decided to leave the band. Phil brought great commercial success to Genesis.

Gabriel btw also dabbled in pop (if you want to call Phil's music pop) Sledgehammer for instance. I just don't get why Phil's music is blasphemous. To who, and why.

If you are that die hard fan of the 'old' Genesis, listen the Stephen Hackett: Genesis revisited, there are some pretty cool stuff on that CD. :-)

  • @joergen100 Agreed! But we don't want to bring the commercial success factor to musci, also, I agree on the fact that everybody flirted with Pop back in the 80's, but nothing compared to the long term commitment late Genesis embarked with "the whore".

Love Stevo! Some pretty good stuff and some misses on that CD

Genesis Pop Collins era is blasphemous in the sense they were a PROG band, and leaving the genre, to go POP. Is like Superman joining forces with Lex Luthor, his nemesis.

  • @vivelavidarocka Ha ha Superman joining forces with LL! I like that analogy.

My all time favorite album is Lamb lies down on Broadway. Absolutely without equal in my opinion. But have to say that both Trick of the Tail and Duke are up there for me. (Pop or no pop).

If it is blasphemous that a progressive rock band changes to mainstream success, is probably in the eye of the beholder. (I stopped listening when they did "We can't dance" - a bridge too far for me!

  • @vivelavidarocka I can't dance, I can't talk. Only thing about me is the way that I walk!

    Hooray for Collins!

  • @joergen100 I think both Genesis' (if you will) are great in their own way...too much made of Post-Gabriel vs the original band....I find great music in both eras. Just different...bad or good does not play into it...

  • @vivelavidarocka Haha, perfect comment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @vivelavidarocka oh yeah! he did! Long live Peter Gabriel!

  • @vivelavidarocka No he did not.

  • Comment removed

  • @EricJ1975 in theory he did, commercially he did. but i do love both peter gabriel genesis and phil collins genesis.

  • @RonyBonyman Thanks, so do I.

  • @vivelavidarocka yeah,you're right...

    but he's a f****in' great drummer!!!

  • @vivelavidarocka That's one of the best comments ever!

  • @captaincomputa IN.

  • I was born in 1959. Somebody tell me I didn't witness the death of talent like this. Somebody. Anybody....?

  • I was a member of the hogweed youth movement

  • What is in fact amazing is: Live version is close from studio version. And the production is very complex. So, Bravo

  • "For her merchandise,he traded in his prize" great line..know one writes like that anymore

  • i dont know what's most amazing .. that human beings can write songs like these .. or that they can play them flawlessly live !

  • One of my favorite bands, the early GENESIS album is perfect

  • One of my favorite bands, the early Genesis. And, coming from ex Yugoslavia, it was so hard to get their records, but I had them all. These days we can even see them but unfortunately there are not many live video tracks, but better than nothing. Great!

  • Another thing to keep in mind while watching this is that the guys were in their early 20s - more or less "kids" and were creating this amazing art. I can also hear a bit of Nina Simone in Gabriel's voice, he was a fan back in the day. Man I never.. ever... get tired of watching footage of this band from their brightest days. Thanks to youtube for making my memories accessible. :)

  • Bravissimi mi piace.....

  • Many do not understand his Enigmatic Concepts of Strange Beauty and Unique sounds....... but I do........ It is an Aquarian thing........ *wink* xoxoxoox

  • PURE BRILLIANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bravi..

  • I imagine Gabriel views this as one would an embarrassingly dated yearbook photo...at least I hope he does. The outfit is a bit much, no?

  • love the mellotron !!

  • !!!!!!! excelente !!!!!!

  • @son8of8vazkor Totally agree. I wonder if he looks back now and thinks this was best thing he's ever been involved with? Sure he was a solid drummer but as a performer he wasn't fit to clean a young Peter Gabriel's shoes!

  • oh just ended when the best part was comming. anyway, great son, great video. it's so strange to see a man actually singin with that voice, hehe, just awesome. my thumbs are up.

  • This always blows me away..I come back now and then just to see this video..Its sweet and Peter's voice kills me

  • Where is Chester?

  • sonzeira!!

  • Isto sim é musica boa!!

  • Ti ricordi, eravamo al palapartenope quando feder (buonanima) si lanciò dalla gradinata al grido di : Gabriè si grand......

  • wow - thanks for the trip into past times. phil with full hair and guitar performers playing seriously. Thanks for posting. Love that sound of analogue keyboards.

  • ***************

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • a voz de peter gabriel lembra bastante a de phil colins

  • magnifico

  • Maravilhoso!!!!

  • Fasssscinante!!!

  • play Paperlate!

  • Man, if I had a full head of hair- that's the messed up shave job for me. I'd just say "early Genesis" and get blank stares in response.

  • @hozayamz ha! ha! that was funny :)

  • @hozayamz not from us! :)

  • I always said, that in a completely different way of being, but Peter Gabriel reminds me of Dali....

  • @Jaiv74 Both true Renaissance men.

  • Gabriel was an amazing performer, showman and singer, much in the tradition of the old -fashioned Troubadour. Was fortunate enough to see him at the height of his career. Wonderful stuff.

  • @Thereisonlythemoment > have you seen any of footage of his shows from the past ....let's say 10 years? STILL incredible!!!!!!!

  • @Thereisonlythemoment > have you seen any of footage of his shows from the past ....let's say 10 years? STILL incredible!!!!!!!

  • @Thereisonlythemoment

Me too, I saw them a few times, magic.

For me an era ended when Peter left.

  • @Thereisonlythemoment Ian Anderson/Gabriel had the most unique performance style imo

  • @Thereisonlythemoment My friend, my friend, please, don't say that he "was", he still is and will be for a long time!! lol Carry on Peter Gabriel!!

  • @ricmaciel Yes sorry about that, very well put. The man is still an amazingly talented performer.

  • @Thereisonlythemoment Better words never spoken. Without a doubt, the one person who most impresses me way back and to this day. Honestly, you were very fortunate. Myself , I was not so fortunate. Have had a great life throughout. no envy ever in me ; I always wish the ultimate best for everyone. But, I have to say,on this one, I have a huge twinge of jealously. You lucky dog!

  • 1:29 , first instance of hip hop ever recorded

  • Fabulous song from a great album. It's amazing how Genesis has changed. They were great in the 70s and the 80s.

  • They became so much better when Phil took over as singer, this guy to strange.

  • @nwlman The whole point jackass.

  • @nwlman The whole point jackass. They were a theatrical band. Go listen to lady goo goo ga ga. That is so cutting edge. Gabriel is master.

  • @Dayzka

Oh I see they were a theatrical band before, well thats as maybe but they are still better with Phil Collins at the helm, and I dont listen to Lady Ga Ga, Peter Gabriel did One good song in my opinion, remember its my opinion and that was Sledgehammer. Commercial pop music , you cant beat it.

  • @nwlman Depends what you're into. I like both.

  • What happened with genesis when he left, this is music!

  • yes, folks! its GENESIS, the music of your fathers, as they were young and hopeful....

  • @TheNorthBerliner well said. We were hopeful.

  • @teddingtontcu

it was before BUSH and the holy shit of 9/11....now we`re lost our hope, but we are lucky, we are knowing GENESIS at the stage , and the MUSIC OF GENESIS is in our vains and souls !

    Without any hope, but...lucky!

  • Holy smokes..Its music...Read into it what you want but save your religious influence to yourself...While you were listening to Genesis, did the lord strike you down?..Give us a break...Enjoy the tunes

  • i am glad to let this music affect me

  • I adored this music. I was addicted to it. I followed it for 30 years. I had every album and studied every word. Sadly I was being directed away from God. Thankfully God has freed me from it's grip. Genesis belongs to the bible, and Gods word will remain until the end of time.

  • @MegaNova999 , I hate to inform you of this, but God is dead. You are now truly free... now go celebrate and rock out to some Genesis!
