  • How long have you been flying?

  • Great video, thanks for posting...what a machine, I love the Beaver and Otters, long may they fly.

  • What is with the mindless fear of modern technology in general aviation? One would think by now that Lycs, Continentals, and old radial engines could be retro-fitted with sequential fuel injection and better ignition systems. Such systems have been proven in millions of cars.

With modern technology, even old radials could be started up as easily as any ordinary car!

  • @InfiniteMushroom: The point of owning an old radial is to own an old radial. Would you take a '69 Camaro SS and put in a GT-R turbo six? As for the current generation of aircraft, ask the feds. There's so much red tape out there, it's near impossible to get any type of development through. It's one of the primary reasons a new Cessna 172 costs over $300,000 nowadays. It's ridiculous. An alternator on a Bonanza is exactly the same as the one on a Buick, but costs $900 more.

  • @bgiesbrecht101 and i bet FAA would shit if you put a buick unit on there Eh?

  • @InfiniteMushroom We have these because some people just don't like modern crap. When it comes to airplanes, Low and slow all the way. High flying jets have to style, no soul. Fabric airplanes, Radial airplanes, anything old and slow that doesn't fly very high is heaven.

  • @InfiniteMushroom Because in places up north like Northern BC, Northern Alberta, the Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, and Alaska such instruments don't operate as well under the adverse conditions, as well as it's not practical to install them as they don't have as many facilities that are able to do so. They are also not cost efficient due to the small amount of people. In more populated areas general aviation aircraft are fitted with those systems.

  • @InfiniteMushroom Complexity adds cost and unreliability.

  • @InfiniteMushroom if they make it that easy I don't want a damn radial. If I could, I would steal this plane. I wouldn't get to far since I don't know how to start it, but maybe the pilot would feel sorry for me and give me a flight instead of turn me into the mounties.

  • Nice video, sounds great. What is the serial number of that beaver?

  • Nice!!!!!!!

  • Does the black handle next to the wobble pump control the water rudders?

  • what are those 3 knobs above the Tach and MAP gauge, friction adjust?

  • Love it when a radial comes to life

  • Nicely done...thanks!

  • Awesome Vid! What is the black lever you pushed twice post engine start?

  • been there done that

  • The sound of that engine is fantastic!! I have this A/C in MS FSX by aerosoft. Love it.

Thanks for posting this great video.

  • Nice running round! Started up nice and clean.

  • Wow... Lucky guy!!

  • Thank you for the explaination! Would love some more Beaver videos! Especially like this "walk-through"!

  • @awake144now

dont try to fly a plane with only youtube video.... cause i wont be one of your passenger lolol

  • @DISRUPTOR40 - Disruptor!! I wouldn't dream of flying a plane with only Youtube teaching!! Just intrigues me! Have considered buying a POH but seems like they're pretty hard to come by. Also, to further make it impossible for me, there are no Beavers in the state I live in, as far as I know. Much less one on floats! So... no worries, mate!

  • Awesome airplane

  • Such an amazingly awesome video, thanks for sharing!! Would you please explain what exactly you are doing to start the Beaver? A entire walk through explanation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Red handle is the mixture, the little handle I pumped several times is a "wobble Pump" it pressurizes the fuel lines( each beaver needs more or less pumping depending on how good the wobble pump works. This Beaver has the throttle in the middle next to the mixture, prop control for RPM is on the right. I pumped a little extra fuel into the carb just before turning the magnetos on as this Beaver needs a little extra fuel for a cold start. If there was too much fuel, she would back-fire.

  • @messner101 Is the wobble pump also known as the primer? I have to pump a level in my cessna 172 just back and forth as opposed to up and down and we call it the primer.

  • @CA477544 this pressurizes the fuel lines with liquid fuel where as the primer loads the cylinders with fuel vapor for better combustion =D

  • @CA477544 No. On the beaver the take is in the belly. The wobble pump primes the lines from the tank to the carb(s)

  • @messner101 the civi has the throttle in the middle, the old service beavers are throttle, prop, mix.

they should all be that way..

  • oops. Forgot to turn on those magnetos. lol XD

  • @Apollo580 Actually in a radial engined airplane you crank the engine then turn on the mags so that you can make sure the the bottom cylinders are free of oil and will not hydraulic and damage the engine.

  • Nicely done, like a lulluby...

  • I could never get tired of that sound... pure horsepower!

Just think: 19 more years, and the P & W R-985 Wasp Jr. will be one of the few radial engines that will have been in service 100 years after it was first designed.

    PRICELESS

  • I used to perform a similar procedure when starting my old Bentley!Magnetoes on and off;prime, check oil and water, open radiotor flaps etc.Wonderful fun!

  • How long did it take to restore that beast?

  • isn't the throttle suppose to be on the far left? oh well. i love that plane.

  • There's two versions of the setup, one where the throttle's on the left, another where it's in the middle. :)

  • Man !! you´re the best ! ... how´s it going Greg ??? it´s been while since I talked to you...I hope you´re doing good...Im doing my commercial and hopefully I´m gonna be working as soon as Im done... good luck cap.!

  • it would be awesome if you could do some sort of explanation as to what all the pumping and switching is.

  • the red handle to his right is the manual fuel pump handle, not sure what's on his left.

  • @flyboy8492 He's pumping the primer.

  • @Apollo580 ah, thank you

  • Looks in pretty good condition, I'm taking it that it's been recently overhauled?

  • Could you do a walk through all the pumping and switching?

  • that beaver is in stunning condition!

  • Awesome, makes me think of the Canadian shield !

  • Beayutiful! Thats the way an "airplane" is supposed to look and sound.

    Real airplanes have round engines!

  • Awesome sound! Looks like Campbell River :)

  • I do that same thing nearly every day and the sound of an R-985 roaring to life refuses to get old. A "deep, throaty growl" as a co-worker once put it.
