I'm trying to use a pen like that. I'm new to the whole penmanship thing. I can't see to avoid scratching the crap out of the paper I write on. Also, the ink smudges if I press too hard. Does my ink have too much water in it? I need some tips.
@pacman80500 I love the Shaeffer 100 FP, good quality for 30 dollars. They dont have much flex(for line variation). Another one that is a bit more would be a parker 51. If you really dont want to break the bank, Pilot varsity can turn into ink drops. The Lamy Safari is also a cheaper (under 20 USD) fountain pen and also its pronounced like Lamb with a long E(LOM-ee)
@MrDidou17 It looks like a flex pen and the grip looks a bit like Visconti. It may be a Visconti with a flex nib or a Mont Blanc, i dont think its Parker or Pelikan so i will go with Visconti or Mont Blanc with a flex nib.
This is a bit misleading, fountain pens don't do that, it is the flexible nib fountain pens that give you line variation with pressure. There are also italic nib and many others. However, most of the common fountain pens are rigid and the lines it write is like a ballpoint. The difference is the smooth feeling when writing with a fountain pen compared to a bp.
Leighpod, are you using a vintage flex nib fountain pen? It looks amazing and I'm just wondering what kind it is! I'd love to see more videos of that pen, it's amazing looking!
@ohshizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz It is a vintage flex becuase it is a eversharp nib, eversharp are not commonly flexible, the safest bet for a vintage flex is a waterman or a mabie todd. Cheers
This person put HOURS into developing his writing. I did calligraphy as my summer project. I tried copperplate but I couldn't get it. This is similar, though less formal. Still super hard.
@subtleserveyor Like copperplate but less formal... that is roundhand, the basic when starting to use a flex nib. It is cursive with all the downstrokes thickened, while copperplate requires a lot more specifics in the form of the letter, the shape of the thick strokes and the angle of the slant etc. Cheers.
I'm gonna get one of those fountain pens for Christmas, so I can use it at school. I'll take out my new fountain pen and show it to my friends, and suggest they get one too to improve the reliability and consistent writing quality. Since my handwriting is considered exceptionally neat within my class, i'll be the most popular student in no time, impressing all the teachers. Mission Accomplished.
@ninjalanyards already tried that and I hate to disappoint but it has no effect on teachers. With your friends they will probably think you are crazy to buy a pen that is over $10 but there is always the fact that writing with a fountain pen just feels awesome.
@ricks1204 not really there are plenty of good quality pens that most people could probably afford. Lamy Safari is a good work horse pen and at a price of $25 its actually really good. It isn't flexible such as the one in the vid so getting a really thick line isn't easy unless you get a bold nib. but fountain pens aren't neccesarily expensive.
@Ryan0Ebbers Well the fonts on MS Office were done first by a human being before it got super famous and became a font on MS Office......ahaa, just kidding. I have no idea if thats true. x]
@anonymous294 The persons using a flexible nib. Some pressure has to be applied to split the nib, but it only works with obvious variation on nibs said to be flexible. If you look at the writing, the width of that varies also.
IDK i think the pen is part of better hand writing. when i was in school i had terrible hand writig because i used a cheap 25 cent pig pen. Then latter i started using a supper glider pen which made my writing look slopy but less friction for sure and the letters were bold.
Later i used a $3 uniball pen which made my hand writing actually look better because it started to glob for a second.
After that i used a disposable pilot fountain pen. which my hand writing got much better.
Back in Jr.High School English (1961-63), we had to bring fountain pens to class. Ballpoints were not acceptable. But, I preferred them, especially my refillable Shaeffer with interchangeable nibs. When i was a kid, i used to make quill pens and draw "treasure maps.".
It seems that dignitaries and government officials still prefer fountain pens.
It is possible to produce awful handwriting with a fountain pen. Producing the kind of lettering you saw in this video takes the desire to learn, patience, and practice.
@CanItAlready Yeah, that's why I added yet. It's not like there's a tool that will make you instantly better at anything and everything. But yeah, it does come with a fountain pen in some sort of way, because it lets you write like that.
If you mean specifically the line variation created by a flexible nib, then yes, a fountain or dip pen with a flexible nib (or maybe a brush) is the only way to achieve that. But it is possible to produce gorgeous writing with just about any pen. Palmer style cursive has been taught with ballpoints and pencils for decades. My sister's handwriting is lovely. Mine, not so much, unless I'm making a conscious effort, whether it's ballpoint, flexi FP or whatever. :)
@CanItAlready Yeah. Except with a flexible nib, you can make more elaborate details like serifs by lightly brushing the tip or thicker, bolder letters by applying more pressure. IDK, though, since I've yet to find a flexible nib in my country. Even the one store I've found selling fountain pens has a limited stock.
As for finding flexible nibs, if you want true flex, you might have better luck if you buy vintage. If you're fine with semi-flex, there are only a few manufacturers making modern pens with flex. I haven't tried them, but I've read that the Namiki Falcon is semi-flexible (John Mottishaw can make them more flexible), Richard Binder modifies modern Pelikan nibs to make them flex,
writing like that ins't too dificult, but compare the price... a good ballpen costs maybe 30$, then you get a good one. but a good fountainpen with a flexible nib will cost you way over 500$...
I like using pen with fine point. Would extra fine nib for fountain pen be just as good as fine point ballpen? I want fine tip in a pen so it won't blot when I write.
@Zeith101 this is the power of fountain pens... crappy writing never looked so good (the person who made the video however clearly devoted part of his life to improving hand writing)
@solittleusernames It comes easier with a fountain pen. Good writing. It forces you to hold the pen in a certain way.
Could be I also learned how to write with a fountain pen at school, which reminds me of writing lessons that it came back to me the way it did.
Where I grew up(NL) they also learned kids to write with a dip pen as a standard(in NL). This is just about 25 years ago, so I don't know if this is stil standard, but I think it should be.
@tuintu Just learn how to print...it's nice AND neat. Or just practice writing cursive, I always hated cursive until I figured I need to learn it in order to write in Spencerian Script.
@MelodyPaz: Practise, practise, and more practise. And a good fountain pen with a flexible nib - or a calligraphy pen - will get you the varying width of the lines in the letters.
@MelodyPaz seems studying italics and Cyrillic forms ect should simulate that elegance with enough creative diversity yet honestly the elegance itself seems to hinder speed and readability sometimes =o
@twiluvable It's an old fountain pen from the 40's. I'm trying to find one myself. They can be quite expensive, up to $130. Fountain pen's are more of an acquired taste.

@MelodyPaz
It takes practicce to write like that. penmanship is one of my many hobbys. To improve your handwriting do these steps
STEP 1
find a hanwriting style that you want. like a form of cursive
STEP 2
PRACTICE forming the letters first then connect them and jott down lots of sentences useing all the letters in caps and non caps
Step 3
after you have gotten to where you can write all of it at a good pace then replace your normal handwriting with this and use it all the time
Monsteryoyostring 1 year ago
@MelodyPaz: Practise, practise, and more practise. And a good fountain pen with a flexible nib - or a calligraphy pen - will get you the varying width of the lines in the letters.
