@babykevinxoxo No. My VERY crude estimation (just based on what I've seen from modern players' rating progress) is that Fischer would've gained around 5 points per win. So the most he could've picked up was 15 points if Fischer won the 3 he lost. That means about 2800.
Also, Kasparov's peak was 2851. You could argue that b/c of rating inflation Fischer's 2785 was just as good as Kasparov's 2851 I suppose.

@babykevinxoxo No. My VERY crude estimation (just based on what I've seen from modern players' rating progress) is that Fischer would've gained around 5 points per win. So the most he could've picked up was 15 points if Fischer won the 3 he lost. That means about 2800.
Also, Kasparov's peak was 2851. You could argue that b/c of rating inflation Fischer's 2785 was just as good as Kasparov's 2851 I suppose.

@babykevinxoxo Probably not. 3 years away from tournament chess is a huge handicap to overcome. So if we assume that Fischer wasn't preparing much and just went in cold against Karpov in 1975 then I would bet on Karpov to win.
At that level you just can't afford to be that out of practice. Fischer did create the biggest separation between champion and rest of the field the world had ever seen at the time, but that would've closed significant with him out of practice.

I was 12 years old in '72. My uncle turned me on to chess at the same time the Fischer/Spassky championship was happening. I wasn't all that knowledgeable of what was really happening as is was happening. Later down the road I acquired the appreciation of the game. My opinion of Bobby is that shortly before his death he was a victim of Alzheimer`s. People who have this disease will do and say anything. They don't know what they are doing it. They can't know.

When I was a kid in the late 60's I was obsessed with Chess, and Bobby Fischer was the Chess icon. After winning the World Championship he disapeared. Like in the game itself, I wondered if his absence was a strategic sacrifice or a deep brilliancy that no one understood. I believed some day he would return to Chess and dominate the world once again. Instead he became a lost soul. Probably the greatest Chess player of all time. RIP Bobby.
