i played percussion in traditional west african dance troupes and i've never seen anyone dance like that. When will you people realize that the dancing that you call "house" has no more soul to it than breakdancing has these days.  Once you go mainstream you can't connect with the spirits of the people who created the underground style(s) of dancing...notice i said STYLE(S)...nuff' said. old skool will teach you if you listen - lesson today, dancing is a individual thing, remember that!

well first off, youve already made a mistake in generalizing that african dance is only limited to/like that of the west side. secondly, much of house is brasilian influenced. much of brasilian music is african influenced. thirdly, mainstream or undergound, if a person feels the groove of whatever beat and he or she moves, then that is soulful.

Well, I do stuff when I dance that a professor of West African dance says is taken almost directly from West African. Moreover, it doesn't have to look exactly like it, and it doesn't borrow exclusively from West African. I've shown house to people from many dance backgrounds, and they all see echoes of their styles. The common strand is that the steps are adapted to 120 bpm, they have a consistent swing rhythm, and it's heavily improvisational.
