Wow...I must be doing something wrong! I have a 305 in my 76 nova and I have never been able to get it past 4k rpm! not to mention the best gas milage I got out of it was 9 city.
I have a 1986 GMC half ton with 3.23's and a TH700R4. I was told that I could throw a TH350 in it and still get decent mileage out of it and that the TH350 is a tougher tranny anyways. I have went through 2 TH700's already. Just curious.
Do you have aftermarket connecting rods in this motor? Im building a 305 with the stock compression ratio. Id like to rev mine out like that safely though.
No its all stock bottom end. I recently fixed a fuel delivery issue and now i run it up to 7000 almost everyday.... Having a lower CR ratio doesn't put as much force on the rods at these rpms.
@barnie7219 Agreed, you can make any engine fast if you have the dough. Even if your 305 is fast, its still a 305! That said, what you think is cool is cool.
I replaced a 305 four barrel engine with a 283 two barrel engine and found it more powerful than the 305?

what mods have you done to it?

@53Belair1 just wondering, why would you want to build a 305? The 350 gives you way more bang for the buck
barnie7219 1 year ago
@barnie7219 Because everyone and their mother has a 350. 350's are BORING.

@mongo5888 i think everyone and there mother have a 350 because its a proven cost effective power house.

er, is that engine stock?? is it me or did I see a 6000 RPM shift? mine shifts at only 4500 RPM. What was done to it performance wise?
camarogeit 2 years ago
I get 21 mpg on the interstate at around 80 mph.
The 305 has such a flat torque curve that the tall gear in the rear doesn't slow it down much.
RequiemFSAE 2 years ago
what type of gas mileage are you getting out of the 305 with the TH350 and 2.73 rear?
Shwevle454 2 years ago
It has a TH350 with 2.73 gears in the rear.
