The 777 has been demonstrated up to 38 knots of crosswind component. It handles it amazing too, in real life and the simulator... Can't do a forward slip fully with that kind of wind though, the bank angle would be too high, you have to land crabbed, and kick some rudder on touchdown.
This brings an interesting point of pilot-training: We see what is purported to be a Test Flight ( very likely is ) thus it is a Test Pilot ( thus profoundly proficient and as experienced at the limit ) who flies several million dollars of totally new equipment right onto the deck at the crab established on final. My flight instructor told me to cross-control, but I wanted to do it this way except kicking the vehicle straight at tire contact. We see here the tires do not fail in overload.
You can actually land a big jet in crab without any problem. The rubber scrubs off a lot of the side load. The standard method is to kick the plane straight during the flare, but in tough conditions, a solid landing - even with a crab - is fine. The inertia - with the plane's center of gravity being in front of the mains - also helps straighten it out during the rollout. While the wing-down (slip) method may be good for a landing high wing aircraft, it's simply not practiced in the airlines.
And just in case any Flight Simulator X SP1 pilots are watching this same vid, feel free to contact me on skype (bigfleabag). Up for a flight almost any time i am free (Depends on my mood, i'll notify you if i am going to fly.)
And just in case anyone is wondering, i'm not a real world pilot, just an enthusiast. ^_^
If anyone needs a good soundpack for their 737-800's my friend does good soundpacks :D i'll hook you up.
The ending's sideways landing is called crabbing, it is what you do a high crosswind landing. Unless, of course, he is doing what we call a 'forward slip' which is basically pushing the rudder to one direction to change your heading, and then using the ailerons to keep the plane flying on the correct heading. This increases the surface area of which drag can act apon and it also helps lose altitude if you are too high for landing. He kept an almost perfect 5 degree glideslope on landing. Goodvid
Folks, these are obviously Boeing test pilots conducting flight tests, filmed by Boeing...and they are intentionally landing in a crab, intention is to demonstrate the ability of the main landing gear to withstand the side forces. Notice, there was NO attempt to sideslip, the common technique we use normally, in a crosswind, in order to make the landing smooth as possible. If you had been onboard, you'd think the airplane would fall apart, landing in a crab is very rough.
Nice video, how come you got that music, didnt it get matched with third party content?
