It's true, the U.S did use pirates during the American Revolution. It's called "Geure de Course" (I know I spelled it wrong) It means war on commerce. It's typical when a county who has a smaller naval power then its opponent, this strategy is employed. For the most part it didn't have a great effect, but it helped alot during WWII when Japan pulled off Pearl Harbor, and we lost most of our ships.

This happens to a lot of groups who try to defend something. If its something a big country wants, they are labeled ex terrorists, anarchists, pirates.

I am not saying they don't exist, but some groups are labeled that, because its an effective strategy to convince ones own people that another group of people are bad.

Now the pirates are pissed off some their men were killed. I do not think they will take hostages anymore, but wage war in anger. All they wanted was 2 mil which the boats company would have paid, but our government came in and sniped them instead further escalating the problem.

Yeah I just heard about all this the other day and it completely changed my mind on the issue. The fishermen started out basically trying to form their own "coast guard" since there is no real government in place. They just wanted to stop all the other countries from illegally fishing in their waters (and also dumping toxic waste) within 200 km of Somalia's coast. Then it just escalated from there.

This side of the story definately needs more news coverage.
