Given Davis' many spectacular film performances ("Jezebel", "The Letter", "Now,Voyager", "All About Eve"), it's unfortunate that too many people define her career by this campy role. And, Joan Crawford may have been a movie star, but she was never an actress.
This works so well cause the acresses hated each other in real life so despite them being brilliant actresses this is probably there best roles because of the realism of it
When filmmaking was an art, and acting was a craft. This is my favorite scene. Enjoy this clip. Savor the richness that has now been lost to technological egos and passing fads.
outrageously superb film. the screen practically crackles with the brittle tension instilled by the outstanding performances of both davis and crawford. the cinematography, the editing, the score and the sinister twists in a gnarled script - all note perfect. the dark jagged gem of 60s Hollywood.
The funniest thing is when Bette Davis ordered a Coke machine to be installed on the set (Joan Crawford had been married to the founder and chair of Pepsi, and Davis did not even like soda), Crawford retaliated in the scene where she is dragged by Davis across the floor by weighting herself down with barbells or some other type of heavy equipment, thus causing Davis to strain herself. I suppose there were divas even back then!
Bette Davis made this movie, without her we wouldn't be watching it today. I loved her voice, she could make it sweet or evil. These two hated each other but deep down inside I think they had a mutual respect for each others talent. They robbed her of her oscar in this one for sure!
From what I heard, when Anne Bancroft was announced as the winner for Best Actress over Bette Davis (Joan Crawford was not even nominated), Crawford insisted right then and there on presenting the award to Bancroft. (Evidently, back then, the actors already knew who the winners were before the general public did). I must admit, however, that Bancroft really deserved it for portraying Ann Sullivan in The Miracle Worker.
this is exactly what i needed! I'm doing this for a scene study for performing arts. I can watch this 5,000 times instead of having to fastfoward the whole movie to find this part! Thanks so much!
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is one of the best movies Joan or Bette played in and a true classic, not to like it is just....insane.... Maybe you need therapy?
These actresses had more hate for each other than did their characters!

this movie (from what I've seen of it in clips) is kind of like Stephen King's Misery. Does anyone else think that?
FanofBewitched 2 years ago
OMG! I thought the same thing. I bet Stephen King was inspired by this for sure!
