@bd189 I don't rule out the possibility you brought up about a greedy motive behind how we handled Iraq, but I also don't think there is sufficient proof of it. The way you suggested we should have handled Iraq is something I have considered, and I think you might be right.  Cutting off the head or heads of the snake has worked in the past. After all of the chaos we went through in World War II, it was when Hitler committed suicide that the European front of the war was finally about over.

Maybe killing Saddam and his top officials would have been enough in Iraq for the overthrow. However, I don't think a democratic government would have emerged, much less been preserved. Democratizing the Middle East is a big part of the idea.
