@REI02021809 The Mk XVI (16) was actually the last merlin engined spit. The Mk XVI was basically a Mk IX but had a Packard-built merlin so they gave them a different mark number
Lovely to see PL965 being flown by Peter. I videoed PL965's first post restoration flight at Rochester, piloted by Mark Hanna. The first flight took place on 23rd December 1992 - 17 years ago yesterday!! The first three post restoration flights can be seen on Youtube - see rgnvideo. I have been associated with 16 Sqn wartime group and met and got to know some of the pilots who flew PL965 during the war. Sadly, some of them have now passed away. RIP
My dad works for Peter Teichman, and i visited Rochester a few months ago and Tom Bowling gave me a tour of the Fairey battle. And my teachers dad flew Spits for 16sqn in the war.
raftornado are you still involved in MAPS? if you are i'v probably met you!
RT- Well done ol' boy for helping to keep this beautiful aeroplane flying. I can only envy you being in such a position-I'd keep my right arm for the priviledge of being associated with a Spit in any capacity. Tally-ho!! :)
Strange she has the bullet proof windscreen fitted as PR Spitfires had the curved one piece Plexiglass. She has the enlarged deeper oil tank under the nose though.
she may have been a conversion from a FRIX which would account for the armoured glass and then had the her arnament removed, thus becoming a PRXI, check out Alfred Price "Spitfire " and there are pictures of the yanks at mount farm in oxford using PRXI's with the curved front panel windscreen.
The Mk 11 is the last merlin engined spit

I thought it was only the PR MK XIX that had the smooth windscreen fitted? Am I wrong in my assumption?

Funnily enough, I have a copy of Alfred Price's excellent, "Spitfire," sat on my book shelf upstairs! I will take a decko :)

Thanks for posting this. PL965 is one of my favourite Spits.
