if you are able, please read "the 80/10/10 diet" by douglas graham. incrfedible book. but on a short explanation, it is 80% carbs from sweet juicy fruit and some greens, 10% protein from that fruit and greens, and 10% fat from coconut, nuts, seeds, etc... a totally raw vegan way of eating based on simpllicity, lots of fruit, and low fat intake. :)
yeah ive found that since ive started eating mostly raw i actually spend less than before..it was all the meat substitute tofu-nonsense that was racking up the grocery list...(and the eating out at restaurants)...organic veggies are a steal in comparison! not to mention way healthier and tastier!! but if you wanna truly save money, plant some seeds and grow your own organic food!! =D
yeah, we are lucky. we get them for much less generally because this is avocado country! they are a bit expensive, so a treat for those who cannot afford as much of them. we have put our minds into the frame of "we deserve to eat good, organic food and can afford whatever food we want" and somehow that happens no matter how poor we are! :) thanks!
My thought is you can spend money now on good, healthy, yummy food that's actually nutritious now, or you can spend it on hospital bills, doctor visits and medicine later.
The most expensive way to eat a raw diet is to buy too many raw specialy items(cookies, olives, cashews, truly raw almonds, kimchi, energy bars, cacao, honey, kombucha, etc.). I have found that the raw diet is very affordable as long as I only buy 2 or 3 raw specialy items a month.
you are completely correct! specialty items are great for people transitioning who enjoy tastes of prepared foods, etc... or to keep snacks around. we love them to grab and go. but truly, we think raw and whoel foods as they exist unaltered is the way to go for health and for the bank account! :)
I buy lots of bulk food such as cashews, almounds, walnuts, raisins, flax seeds, pumkin seeds, sunflower seeds, rolled oats, which are all raw and usually 5 pounds bags and 3 of each type of nuts and seeds. Except for the rolled oats we buy 50 pounds bags and store them in mylar bags and then put them in food grade 5 gallon buckets for long storage, which I get for free at any grocery store bakery. Its cheaper then buying them at the grocery store plus most stores dont have raw nuts and seeds.
great tips! bulk is always better. are your cashews truly raw? where do you find them in such large amounts? all of the organic cashews in bulk in stores are all steam-opened, and not actually raw. maybe you found truly raw bulk ones somewhere? awesome that you recylce bakery containers, too...i hope people read your comment and get ideas...thank you!
( avacados, bananas, melons, mangos) stuff with thick skins at Food 4 less ( LA discount grocery store) for real cheap and get my greens, apples, carrots, grapes at the health food store or sometines the Farmers mkt.
This way I can get all my produce I need for cheap
we do the same. we are fussy about organics when it comes to the heavily sprayed items. we find many unsprayed avaocadoes are a good option. thanks for the tips. i am sure others will read the comments
Hey nice ideas, you have a lot of energy, I can't wait to go 100% raw and have that kind of energy! I have to find a farm nearby or something, it's near impossible to get organic where I live, but you've helped inspire me to find a way, thanks : ) I have to dump the meat my dad makes, he's stuck in his ways, the things you gotta do lol
maybe you can just do less meat and go slow. no one says you have to get rid of all of it or be 100% raw, just do the best you can and grow some of your own organic produce if you cant find it nearby. even if you only have a porch to grow it on, start some tomatoes and lettuce and herbs in a pot! we are not 100% raw, but do have a nice bit of energy. we do our best. thanks for the kind words! best of luck finding yummy fruits!
Great video! You know, I have been spending $800-$1000 or so on food, and that's about 3 times what i should be. Part of that is due to overeating, which is a whole different issue. My strategy for saving is going to include to a large part wild harvesting greens and going more in the direction of green vegetable juice. I find fruit is just too sweet for me, and I am very sugar sensitive. I may be going off superfoods for a while, as they are very expensive.
forgaging (especially this season) is the best way ever to save money. if you see yards with uneaten fruit trees, offer to trim it up in exchange for a little fruit or veggies :) also, if you read 80-10-10 (you prob already have), he explains sugar sensitivity and candida. it has nothing to do with fruit, it has to do with fat intake when eating fruit. if you havent read it, check it out. i know you are a fast metabolizer and have limited fruit there, but the book puts it in perspective
I live in Minnesota, we don't have to much fruit growing around here, maybe just wild berries if your lucky. Even the farmers markets are mostly non-organic. I have not read the 80-10-10 book. That's interesting but I don't see how fat intake would be a problem for candida or sugar issues. It seems more logical to lay off the sugar for some months and allow that situation to heal itself, with green vegetable juice (not sweet).
i know, the logic behind fats and candida makes no sense until you read it. i thought it was all a bunch of crap till i read it. so just check it out if you would like the opposite view of all we have been taught. yeah, minnesota is prob rough for produce or wild harvesting. but you never know. there may be nature preserves, etc.. or if you research local wild plants, i am sure there are some less known ones around. have fun!
OK, well I have a question for you. Why do so many people get trapped into that sort of belief system? Raw foods could be a belief system, so could veganism. And as a spiritual person I know that all beliefs are false, so I choose not to get trapped into such things. Why has the 811 thing caught on so much? Does he really believe than can work for everyone? Raw foods can't necessairly work for everyone, why should that? I have a fast oxidizer metabolism, and lots of sugar is a no-no.
he explains the fast oxidizer thing in the book and how someone would transition. i dont know that it is a belief he is teaching. i think it is more a logic based on what man has been eating since the dawn of time. man would not chew cacao beans straight off the tree (they are bitter), but would certainly eat a mango fresh and ripe. it is based on the simplicity that what is available year round, and what we would forage for, and what our biology is built for... continued
is a vegetarian system that would work out to the 811 ratio approxiamtely. but its less about numbers than it is about showing exactly how things work in the body and how humans would logically gather food. would they sit there for hours and strenuously crack open enough nuts to gorge on? no. we would open a couple and move on to easier and tastier fruits and then feast on those. i cant explain it, it just makes sense and is something we would like to try eventually....
but he answers all the stuff you questioned in your comments. i understand what you are saying about beliefs. but we all form them. it all depends on what we choose to believe. if we choose to believe superfoods are the answer, they will be. if we choose to believe raw vegeatables and fruits are the answer, they all will be. i say experiment with the beliefs that dont sit right any longer to find new ones that feel open and free...hope that all makes sense.
p.s. yes, i think he does believe it is the answer for everyone. not because of his ego, but because it is solely based on the human logical pattern of eating in the wild. apparently he has 100% success rate with candida, etc...you would have to speak to him directly to work on a transitional program or read the book for all the details.
Totally understand your belief system concern....but the way 'I' see raw (again just what I beleve)... is if you have the belief that everything is energy, then rw foods are the foods with the most energy....therefore benefiting your body. To be frank my peers think Im nuts, I dont care..cause for me its not only living longer, its my QUALLLITY of life. And do a little experiment... see the way your mind/body/emotions work raw? Or semi? PEACE OUT :)
Yes, we completely agree that everything is energy and therefore the energy of what we put in our body then multiplies...so completely raw makes sense. This is how we feel best, but then there are the random issues...did you watch the senstivity videos we did? check it out if not. but all in all, we believe the raw foods are what bring the highest of vibration and health. we just tend to be very open and bendy to all ways of life. thank you for the kind words, as well :)
dude...i just repied and it didnt show up...here is round two! yes, we completely agree the raw is best based on energy and vibration. there are other issues (did you watch the sensitivity issues vidoes? check em out). but we agree raw is the best option. our health never increases by cooking the food. minute amounts of vites become more bioavailable, but not with out the killing of the rest of the benefits. but we are open and bendy to all paths people choose. thanks for the kind words too!

An avocado a day is $30-60 a month (around $43... for me) - that's two meals a day if you divide it and throw in a tiny side-dish.
Gotta love them though!

I'm a student, so I don't have a lot of money. But it works out if you want it to work out!
and minimize expensive nuts and dried fruits etc. and go for the produce section!
